This Sucks

I'm more than a little concerned about the pressure fans are putting on Dungey.

He is much, much better than I think anyone could have expected him to be, especially so early in his career, but there is a LOT of unknown and his story hasn't been written yet.

We do this all the times as fans. Everybody starts to look like a Savior. Marrone was deified, then we were reminded he's human. Shafer was the #hardnosed 2nd coming of Schwartzwalder, now there are big questions. After three games we've got people anointing Dungey and people are saying with drop dead certainty that if Dungey doesn't get hurt vs CMU we easily beat them by multiple TDs, and that's something we just can't know. Now we have people saying that if we have Dungey we can go toe to toe with the #8 team in the country. I think that's a bit... much.

Dungey's a good QB. I'm reasonably confident of that. Good QBs have bad games. Sometimes several in a row. That's going to happen, and it's ok. I just don't want to see the kid get killed when it does. We're going overboard and can't help ourselves.

Shut up. He's going to bring peace to this world. I'm all in.

(you don't really have to shut up).

Wilson had a 50 yard touchdown drive to end the half didn't he.

Then we came out and ran two fake options where we handed it off instead to our running back nearly out of a shotgun (something that hasn't worked all year) to start the 2nd half. Why?
On his interception he looked deep yeah he underthrew it but had he thrown it and our receiver caught that 50 yarder the perception would be this Wilson guy is ok.

Should two possessions with awful play calls and a underthrown deep ball throw Wilson under the bus completely?

I thought Mahoney ran the possession right after the half where we went 3 and out...

Don't you think that's what everybody's doing with Fournette? Sure, he's a good back. But his stats weren't that great last year. He had 5 or 6 100-yard games. I already posted how Jordan Fredericks had better numbers through his first three games. Lenny's just a sophomore. Means he's all of 19 years old. He gets his bell rung a couple of times (Steven Clark anyone) and maybe he poops the bed.

Dungey looks good, but he hasn't played enough for me to anoint him as our savior just yet. Nassib had some pretty good games himself.

As an addendum, why is it our guys always lying on the carpet. Blast him with everything you've got (but make it a clean explosion).

My thoughts...it could've been ED's burst on the national stage game. Instead I fear we'll see a half empty stadium in the 4th. Our sh!tty fans were leaving the Dome last week at the end of regulation...you think they'll stay around if we are down 5 TDs in the 4th?
My hope is that the national broadcast will highlight what happened to Dungey in the previous game..and what kind of promise he showed. They wont have anything to talk about with the captain..so id be surprised if they didnt show ED's numbers up until getting assaulted last game. It will at least give people an idea of why we might not look so good offensively in the LSU game if indeed we play poorly. They might even interview him on the sidelines..never know.

I think you're serious. They aren't comparable. Fournette is far more of a proven quantity.

check his carries per game though. we did running back by committee last year. its not like he was getting 25 carries per game and wasn't breaking 100

Meh. A Heisman Trophy ain't that much to ask, is it?

This is one of those damned if you do, damned if you don't games. No one, except maybe the coaches and players, picked Syracuse to win this game preseason. Then Hunt gets injured, Dungey plays great, Fans get their hopes up and Dungey gets his bell rung.

This would be similar to Cuse basketball going down to Louisiana and playing in LA Tech's home gym. Tech is a good basketball program with great fans, but would they realistically expect their team to beat Syracuse. Probably not, but they would hope the game would be close and they would be entertained. I'm thinking that's what most Syracuse fans are hoping for right now. If it's out of reach with 15 minutes to go, Katy bar the door. People will be reaching for their rakes.

If your going to have to miss a game, might as well be this one, I don't think we could be Lsu if Tomy Brady was our qb.

Best QB since McNabb? Did Ryan Nassib get another year of eligibility?
Yeah, should've said "most talented" instead of "best." I fully expect that whatever Dungey does this year won't approach Nassib's 2012, but I think ED's level of play so far as a freshman is higher than what Nassib was doing as a freshman or sophomore. He's further along in his development

And I hope they show that Cheapshotawa hit to Dungey on national TV so people truly understand our present QB dilemma.

I qualify this by acknowledging Nebraska '84.

BUT it is highly, highly unlikely we're going to win with a 4th string walk on starting at QB. But three factors might work in our favor Saturday:
  1. The obligatory letdown -- LSU beat the crap out of Auburn last week--a conference rival who talked a ton of smack leading up to last week's game. I can't imagine that they'll be as motivated to curb stomp us this week. Not saying that they won't be ready and play hard--just that there is a tendency for college athletes to look past weaker opponents on their schedule, and I can't imagine that their players are worried at all about us despite how their coaches have probably tried to pump us up all week in practice.
  2. This is a big game for us on national TV -- again, motivation and playing hard will only overcome so much, but this is the biggest game on our schedule, and the best non-conference opponent to play in Syracuse in a LONG time. I don't want to be corny and suggest that this is our superbowl, but I expect our kids to rise to the occasion and play their arses off this weekend, with national respect on the line. Doesn't mean that they will be able to overcome the talent differential, but it might be enough to keep the game closer than expected.
  3. We're playing at home, LSU had to travel -- not as big of a factor as it would be if they traveled across the country / several different time zones, but hopefully a near capacity crowd will help our cause [even if 7500 will be LSU fans]

Ultimately, we have too much to probably overcome. I honestly can't conceive of any scenario where we'd be able to win with a walk on at the helm, but hopefuly our players make a game out of it and play for major pride on Saturday.

Let's Go Orange!!!

Here we are at 3-0 with an SEC power coming into the Dome and we should all be more excited than we've been for an SU home game in years. We have our best QB since McNabb under center, a true freshman who has the highest pass efficiency in the country through 3 games.

But because some idiot meathead MAC linebacker couldn't handle his defense being torched, the outlook for Saturday's game has changed completely.

With Dungey the offense has looked really good, and we would've had legitimate hope that our offense could move the ball even against a great defense. With a great game from the QB position, a few breaks/turnovers, and with playing at home, maybe we could pull the upset. We should be trying to talk ourselves into that.

Instead, we will be sending the 5th-string walk-on QB to face one of the country's best defenses. Nobody here can find any good reason to talk themselves into even being competitive. What a huge letdown.

Saturday should've been an opportunity to showcase a QB and program on the rise in front of a national audience. Instead, this game will likely just confirm everyone's preconceptions about SU football. So frustrating.

I wish our QB was under center. I think ti would help our running game. Why does everything have to be from thr shotgun or pistol?

Why do you think it would help our running game? Lots of really good running teams use pistol or shotgun.

Because the back gets to the line of scrimmage a lot faster and the blocks don't have to be held as long. The shotgun/pistol teams that run the ball well use the pass to set up the run. If running the ball is your primary weapon, your need to be quick and efficient.

I think you are stuck in an 80s time warp. Arizona and Oregon are two great offensive teams, who use only shotgun and they are top 5 rushing teams who run the ball more than they pass. They run to set up the pass. Syracuse just needs to join the modern era and looks like they can do it with Dungey
