cheap $$ in today's NBA
Absolute no brainer.
Money wise - sure. But now he will be an UFA next year. If they hadn't picked up his option this year he would have been a RFA. Had they not picked it up they may have gotten him on a 4 year deal for cheaper money than next year.
perhaps they dont want to make such a commitment going forward?

It may be different for second round picks, but this is Grant's third year, so I think he'd be the RFA after next year?
Still making half of what any 1st round pick is making who had the option picked up (Ennis). He better get one hell of a 2nd contract because being a 2nd round pick has cost him millions he would have gotten as a 1st round pick the next year.

Agreed. I remember Boeheim saying that right after. This is the best possible situation for Jerami he called it. Hopefully he has a solid year and gets that money.Time to shine, and get the big money. I have faith he will, especially in OKC. As he has been solid from day one in the league. Perfect spot for him. He's gonna have a nice long career.
Getting drafted by Philly in the 2nd round was great for him. He got to showcase himself, and not just be stuck on a bench somewhere, then fall into obscurity.
Grant got roughly half the money of a 1st round pick all throughout the years of his rookie contract. If he stayed the extra year and was a 1st rounder, he would have come out way ahead. How do? If he stayed another year and was a first rounder he still would be making the same amount of money on his rookie deal.
Can you explain UFA and RFA for an an uneducated NBA guy? Thanks

How much would he have made when he came back the next year and JB didn't let him shoot the ball outside the paint? Probably nothing.

he hasnt gotten to the 4 year point of guaranteed money just yet. its a no brainer to give him the 1.5 million and see what next year brings him. He just isn't a piece to the puzzle yet.
Well right I just kind of mean that as - if he progresses like they hope, they get him for a bargain this year. However if he has a good year he likely leaves for more money than they (OKC) would pay.
If they didn't pick it up they could see what his current market would be, match any offer he got (3 or 4 years, maybe 4-6 mill a year?) and again, hope he blows up and he becomes even better value for the money in years 2,3, and 4.
Either way it's a win-win now, we'll see how the year goes
