Tommy

Didn't say they won't figure it out. Didn't say the D wasn't great (they were). Didn't say Devito doesn't have the tools. Simply pointed to the fact that Devito didn't seem to know what the WRs were doing which I find hard to understand.

He made some bad reads and had a few miscommunications with Jackson, sure. But to characterize it as Tommy not knowing the plays is a little rich

There is also difference to throwing in practice versus live game throwing. They know where the dis-connects are and are easily fixable. If just two of the deep bombs had better communication he has possible 1 TD and a 60 more yards

I fully expect him to be better at Maryland but I feel like “we didn’t know what to gameplan for” is a super weak excuse.

A) It’s Liberty

B) So anytime we’re confused by the looks a defense gives us, we can just expect to have zero passing game outside of screens?

Anybody in this thread who says Tommy's poor game was because of lack of tape of Liberty is kind of missing the point. Tommy's throws - especially to TJackson - were missing the target most of the time.

Part of that was them not reading the route that the defender was making available in the same way (i.e., if the defender is on the inside, take the outside cut), but a big part was that Tommy was simply inaccurate with about 1/3 to 1/2 of his throws. Simply missed the target on many occasions. He will get better.

The O Line injury to Heckel kind of throws things into disarray. You have Servais back at center, but now we will be inexperienced at both tackles. I hope they can get by Maryland and be ready for a good effort against Clemson.

I think vanilla is something people say when they're trying to make themselves feel better (God knows I've said it).

Things did get more 'vanilla' as the game wore on, but only because the staff realized we were out of sync.

We know Tommy has all the tools, but I thought when things were getting tough, he went to the fastball too much. That can be coached.

I'm hoping (as we all are), that next week is his first good non-Dome game. I'm not as worried when he's back in the friendly confines.

His timing with the receivers will improve. He’ll settle down and his accuracy and touch will improve.

But I’m already missing dungey’s ability to barrel over defenders and extend drives with his legs. tommy is the kind of qb that needs a clean pocket and dependable running game and I don’t think we have that personnel. Quite concerned.

Yeah but I am not missing the fear of concussion on every run.

I am not spinning anything.

You are the one who said that Dungey never had such an uninspiring game. Now, you concede that he did have bad games. Which is it?

Miami, he was 13-41 for 137 with 0 TDs and 4 picks. Does that qualify as "uninspiring"?

If you are going to make blanket statements, you should check your facts before doing so.

Dungey was a terrific quarterback and definitely goes down as one of our great Qb but he did have poor performances. All QBs do.

Devito's did not play particularly well yesterday. No doubt. But to say that his 17-35 for 176 with 0 TDs and 2 picks is worse than any of Dungey's performances is simply not true.
Yeah but at UM he jump-kicked a dude.

I could be wrong, but I feel like pretty much everyone is on the same page with...

-Tommy played bad last night
-We are very happy that he's our QB for the next 3 years

I wouldn't say that. Check out VirginiaOrange's takes in the game thread.

I said "pretty much" everyone. ;)

And game threads are notoriously insane. Like 75% of posters in the UNC game thread last year had us not going to a bowl game when we went down to them in the 4th quarter.

He seems to be back footing a lot of throws. I wonder if the pressure and screens got that in his head. I can think of 6 or so sideline routes that sailed because of it.

Yeah, he pressed a bit and the mechanics went out the window on some throws.

Couple true Frosh had great games at QB yesterday against better people than Liberty. ,1st game excuse isn't working for me. He will be fine but he was not good.

First thanks for the support, The W is most important. I won’t know what happened until film and I can’t re watch game . We obviously expected TD to be better and we are all disappointed but mission accomplished A W and we showed nothing. I’m not in anyway making an excuse he has none . But a point except Taj no starting wr played in a scrimmage and hardly practiced all summer . Film will show who and what went right or wrong . Sorry I won’t be able to divulge that. I’m glad Maryland looked good now they have our full attention I see is as a 2 1/2-3 pt road favorite. We will certainly need Tommy to play better and the O as a whole moving forward
Could be worst we could be Tennessee today ouch !

It's a fair point that isn't being discussed much. WR and OL injuries during camp were a challenge.

Hopefully everyone got out of there healthy and we can start getting more comfortable in practice this week.

Many bad throws. Hope it gets better. Fear is Ethan Cole remix.

CT brought up an interesting point. None of the starting WR played in a scrimmage. It’s one thing to throw in practice, it’s a whole other thing to do it in game time. They will improve

Or FSU!

Do you have ESPN+? I do believe you can watch past games on demand by using the search feature. We'll be just fine. Go Tommy!

Yeah, the lack of game film on Liberty did smack of being a contrived excuse. But that's where many are. They are trying to bridge the gap between what we saw last season in games and the dismal performance yesterday.

How much of that was TD's fault and how much of it was the receiver's, I couldn't say. The idea that this was just a "timing thing" that can be easily straightened out seems suspect to me. They throw a whole lot of balls in practice.

I'd like to have the confidence that others have that this was just a bad game and that we'll see the TD many expected to see shortly. But, last night 's passing game was so bad, it's understandable that many fans are reassessing just how good TD is going to be and how successful a season SU will, have.

"Come on Man!" I thought game threads were the one & only place here where saying 'stuff' off the cuff, in the heat of the moment, emotional, etc. weren't judged and scrutinized so much. :)

In regards to “being on the same page”, don’t we run a lot of option routes?... where routes are dependent upon how the defense lines up?

Or am I just making that up?

If so, that can definitely explain some of the timing/miscommunications.

My biggest worry was the fact he was drifting in the pocket and throwing off his back foot... ALOT. Also, many of the sideline passes weren’t even catchable unless we have 8 foot WRs with condor wingspans.

The one interception is whatever. Stupid playcall and ended up being a punt. The second one was horrific and probably was the result of Tommy pressing.

Hopefully we can get him some rhythm throws early on at Maryland. It didn’t seem like we tried any of that last night. Every play was a deep route/long out or screen.

1 game. The first game at that, and we all of a sudden think TD won’t be as good. That smells of overreactions and ridiculousness just like your “contrived excuse” about lack of game film.
