Tonight’s playcalling

Theres no excuse Lynch was again terrible. We need a change at OC desperately. Down 13 under 5 min dude is calling a shovel pass to the TE. Clueless

Not once but twice!!! There were two TE shovel passes!!! It’s like they thought we were in the 1st quarter

Keep in mind ncstate played a super soft D those last 5 mins. If they had called their D the way they had all night they prob could have put us away and not made it go down to the final seconds.

the stats and “great offensive” play is deceptive bexause of the D Ncstate was playing.

People complained about Sean Lewis's play calling too. You know Lewis? The co-coordinator for two 4-8 teams. Plus Dino calls the plays.

I think the "patterns" comment is interesting though. We seem to send too much time trying to establish a trend that we can then play off of. In the meantime we are 3 and 9, 3 and 8, 3 and 12, 3 and 6. Want to help the o-line? Stop putting them in so many obvious passing downs.

How about a pass to the TE once in awhile?

How do people know it’s the play calling when the QB won’t throw the ball?

if it’s because we called too many runs, well we need to.establish something there.

They where open in the middle a few times but someone doesn't like to throw it to the middle it seems...

The OL wasnt bad. We call breathtakingly slow developing runs up the middle to “wear down the interior” but all it doesnis lead us to 3rd and long. Its not god damn working

Why the hell do we save hitting the middle and slants for when the games nearly away from us too???

i know i know.. people will say the slant was open all night. Really wasnt until we started running it later in the second half where if not for our D it wouldve been over

Devito sacked himself on most of those because he doesn’t let it go to guys who are open. The OLine I thought held up and did a pretty good job overall. He had time throughout the game.

That can’t be true. It’s not and is never his fault, according to a select few.

Devito took a number of BAD sacks.

But does anyone ever ask themselves why opposing defenses can confidently send heavy blitzes so often?

Predictable run play and easily covered downfield routes. They know we won’t use our TE as a first, second or even third option. Its not just Tommy, thats been status quo for years

Our offensive line is below average. Out backs are average. Our QB doesn’t generate much with his legs. It’s not a recipe for success. But some better play calling might help. We run between the tackles with no success. We need to go to a shorter passing game, slants, quick hitters. We used to do that. Take the pressure off DeVito.

Whatever they did the last 5 minutes they need to keep doing. That goes for staff and Tommy minus the last sack.
I think NC State started playing zone giving up underneath stuff in that last dirve. It almost cost them the game. Can you imagine their fan's reaction if we would have pulled it off?

Yeah, I get the frustration with DeVito. I do.

But the only way we've moved the ball this season is through his passing.

I don't really see anybody else on the field or the coaching on the sideline helping him out a whole lot, other than Jackson.

Defense played more than well enough to win, and could have been even better had we not screwed up at least two easy interceptions. Armstrong is coming on. Coleman plays with so much heart. Cisco and Iffy will make a huge difference when they get back.
We need the fourth-quarter Tommy the rest of the season. In obvious pain, he played with incredible fire and moxie and showed me a lot. The four-WR set doesn’t seem effective when teams know they can rush three, blanket the secondary and still get to the quarterback. The TE is wide open 8 to 10 yards downfield. He’s 6-3, 240 And has great hands and ball security. Get him the ball and make safeties and linebackers bring him down. It will open up so many other things. I know Tommy doesn’t want to make mistakes, but his arm is what separates him ... he needs to thread those slant passes to the WRs and let them make plays. Great quarterbacks still throw interceptions. We can’t have a player with Tommy’s arm so worried about INTs that he won’t use the gun that got him here. One more thing. Teams are absolutely sitting on that quicker hitter to Moe that we seem to run on every first down. Change it up!

Good offense isn't hard to generate with good scheme, even if the talent is suspect or you have known deficiencies.

Something is off with the play calling. Dino mentioned recently that they had to change some of their "tells" or "signs" - after the MD game. I suspect some of the Baylor system is too known and we've been slow to adapt. I wonder if that's what's taken his (Dino's) fire a little.

Let's be honest, once again, we got outcoached. Our play calling, predictable and OL mental mistakes coupled with being frequently beaten, at the point of attack resulted in a giving away a game we should have won!
When do our coaches finally fix the consistent mental lapse issues that are killing our offensive flow?

yes, we have 2 good TE's and yet we ignore them when going to them would be quite effective. I don't get what the offensive coaches are thinking. We need to use our TE's especially to get first downs when our running game is not effective!

Brilliant rock/paper/scissors strategy. They think I'll run this, so I'll run "this instead, " but they probably know that i know that they know I'll run this, so I'll run this instead...

They weren't good but there were plays where Devito had time and failed to see open guys, held the ball way too long, and ran into sacks. He ran out of bounds twice where he could've thrown it away. He missed that obvious slant to Jackson that would have been a touchdown. That was a simple quick read that needs to be seen everytime.

At some point its not about game experience and learning from mistakes anymore. Its whether someone has the mental game. I'm having my doubts.

Honestly, I think Devito is playing scared and I don't think it's his fault. I believe the coaching staff is really limiting him, so instead of just letting the kid go out and rip it and play football, he's scared to run it and scared to improvise and scared to make a mistake. Kids playing like a beaten dog, it's a shame. Take the training wheels off and let the kid go play football.

I don't know--a run up the middle for 1 1/2 yards on first down makes a lot of sense.

Agree

There’s a lot going on here, I’m not a football expert but it’s pretty clear Lynch is not a P5 coordinator. I think he’s a P5 position coach but not coordinator. I think it’s pretty clear we need to move on from the oline coach as soon as the season ends. I would move Lynch back to oline/co-coordinator and go out and find a new OC.

We know our oline struggles and we know our QB is not very comfortable in the pocket. So it baffles me
1) we don’t use the WR screen as much
2) we don’t use the slant as much (Riley is great at this)
3) we don’t run outside or use jet sweeps (widen the field)
4) we need to take more deep shots
5) we almost completely went away from our TEs yesterday, Hackett and Benson were coming into this game hot. I think Benson can be a gamechanger.

Our offense is extremely predictable right now, it’s puns the rock down the middle, or look for a receiver down the sideline. We need variation, we need WR screens, HB screens, slants, sweeps, outside runs, deep shots...we are way too predictable right now.

I get the gripe about maybe the predictability of the run calls but we can't just abandon the run all together either. Dino highlighted that aspect when he first joined Cuse. Certainly the mix and calls should be looked at though.
