Top 30 Gameday Atmospheres - Week 1

I think it's pretty straightforward.

When there is a low 30k or less crowd in the Dome (especially if its a day game), it's one of the worst atmospheres in the country.

When there is low 40s or higher crowd in the Dome (especially for a night game), it's one of the best atmospheres in the country.

I remember during the 1998 Tennessee game, the announcers said that the only thing comparable to that noise level was LSU at night.
The dome at or near capacity is a unique college football experiment.

The Miami game in 94 after Conley intercepted a pass was the loudest I’ve heard in dome. It was incalculable how noisy it was

Students are fickle at every school pretty much. Win and compete and they’ll stick around. First game out the frosh will all be there for duration. My first game was Oklahoma and I should have left at half time and it ended up being crazy in second half

Yup. It's not some magical formula, you got it. And the 10-12K difference that creates a good atmosphere is entirely about the program performing well.

We have a (yet another) early season opportunity to engage the community this season. Louisville, Purdue and UVA are all brand-name opponents. Win and the crowds will grow week-by-week. Lose and they'll evaporate.

After the past 20 years I don't blame anyone for being in show-me mode. Life is too short, and sports is supposed to be entertainment, not masochism.

100%. Cuse needs a hot start this season.

If we do, boy things could be special

SDSU-Arizona won't have any atmosphere.

Not sure why one of the best games is #30 and the disrespect for the fans in Corvallis What is up with that being last. Jonathan Smith has that program playing tough and favored in that game.
Frankie...brand new stadium

SDSU is going to try to impress the PAC10...they have a lot riding on it.

But most of us here have chosen the latter ;-)

That is right.

I actually like Arizona they get a proven QB from Wazzou despite being the worst P5 program for a few years running.

SDSU and Boise should be added immediately both are pretty big cities and markets. PAC needs to stay away from Vegas with all the pro teams and not go into Texas IMO.

I noticed they left the neutral site games off the list, which makes sense

It feels weird to open the season at home. Its been a few years it seems.

SDSU is a no brainer.

After that: debatable all have warts

Boise St
Fresno St
USAFA
CSU
Gonzaga (Olympic Sports)
Hawaii

If the PAC10 gets aggressive actually adding two of Texas Tech, TCU and Baylor would be ok.

Boise metro is bigger than Fresno and people from CA just kind of avoid Fresno. It would hurt the appeal of the Pac 12 in general. Might be the biggest metro in the PST/MST time zones with no major sports franchise? Tucson is all I can think of or maybe Albuquerque.

New Mexico would be a fit if they had respectable football. They should send their football to CUSA or Sun Belt and try to get into the WCC for hoops.

Yeah, we would have had to do a lottery too. But we expanded our student section because they have been so engaged and so many have wanted to come out.

The atmosphere in the dome, if 3/4 filled can be impressive.

This is one of few conference games week 1.

This isn’t a surprise that our game is ranked so highly
So how big was the student section last year? I know some schools are around 10,000.
