We literally got punched in the mouth - hard! I had to stop watching football for the rest of the night just for me to shake off this loss. I don't even know how other ACC teams did and haven't read that many threads yet that's how down I am. However, I'm almost over it but have to vent a little to turn the page.
My perception from the game is that this can't be blamed on any one player but starts with the coaching staff with terrible game planning - on D and this has happened before why can't we understand if they have 3 blockers to our 2 defenders on a screen play or an inverted wishbone where there bringing an extra blocker to the edge we first didn't plan for this and have no answer to the short screen or power run game? On O - I watched the USF vs Memphis game the front 7 on D from USF is there strongest unit yet we run Morris up the middle? And keep the run game going again and again for multiple 3 and outs in the first half? On ST, from all of the mistakes making us right from the get go causing our starting field position was simply awful all game long. Finally the coaching staff seemed more concerned about recruiting last week than spending time getting the team ready mentally for the game...not to be named but our previous coach was outstanding on game planning and mental preparation on bye weeks. This seems to be Shafers big weakness and should be called out for it on Thursdays radio show - plus the coverage on screens & power run plays to the edge. I guess thank goodness we have no more bye weeks...
Can we blame the players for mistakes that were made - hard for me to do this as we saw true freshmen play as true freshman and were not coached up and put into positions to succeed. But 5 games in the lack of experience needs to be overcome with good preparation and coaching prep.
Ok time to wash and rinse this game and go beat the weakest team in the ACC - if the players & coaches don't get mentally prepared and take game planning and play calling serious and play like it's their last game of the season - it will be a long season. Nuff said - Go Orange!
