Trebor Pena transferring to PSU

This roster has a bunch of guys who were “disloyal” to their former programs. Talking about “loyalty” feels pretty silly.
Team captains/top returning players on their team? Who left in the middle of spring ball instead of right after the season like everyone else? Would not say that describes many of our transfers. We can be mad about this. It is fine. We are a program trying to claw our way into a higher tier. Can't lose a guy like this at this time of year. It is crap.

NO.

You should be able to trust someone to abide by the agreements they made.

IF Treb wanted to explore his portal options, he shoulda done that sometime looooong before accepting the Captaincy, and completing all of Spring ball.

As Fran says - there’s a right way to do these things.
And a wrong way.

Peña chose the wrong way.

FFFF him. He’s dead to me now.
And I’m sure to Fran too.
And likely a number of his (former) teammates.

I hope he has a crappy season and regrets his decision every day for the rest of his life.

But other than that - good luck, kid.

Yeah, I agree 100%. We are on the same page here.

I think Coach Brown thought they were all good. A contract signed by Pena, a full on commitment to the team etc

But yeah, should wait till fall camp
What does “contract” mean here? Do we claw the $ back?
Why can’t these deals have specific performance terms? Play for us or no one. This is the only way to end the nonsense

Im not sure the details of the contracts we give out. I do know that we make all of our players on NIL deals sign contracts. This is very different than other schools where it is just a handshake.

At the very least, the student athlete at Syracuse KNOWS they are getting their $$ they were promised. This cant be said for most schools.

I do not think Pena will be getting any of his higher promised payday that he agreed upon back in December.

I dont disagree with Pugh here at all...but the time to do this hard negotiating IMO was back in December. And we were told by Pena himself that we did enough.

Sucks that just a few months later he decided it wasnt.

I dont hate him for trying to get more $$$, I hate the way he is going about it.
Sometimes people get very bad advice.

I respect Pugh but whatever happened to a full scholarship being enough compensation? Last I checked an undergrad education at SU is worth around half a million. That's pretty substantial.

“Enough” is just anyone’s pov. And “costs” and “worth” are very different things. And if your major is football, it’s less either way.

Compensation is no longer the debate. Having some degree of predictability and consistency and way for non-top-tier schools to effectively compete is where the discussion is. (And I vote for real contracts and paid buyouts by the poaching teams as a useful next step)

I'm still trying to figure out how Pugh can reach his phone to tweet with those T-rex arms.

I will admit that I have zero clue on the details, so here is a question. Is it safe to say that Pena (and others) are still on their contracts for the 24/25 academic/playing year and therefore any agreement made for the 25/26 season was more of a handshake deal that was pending?

Moral of the story, don’t put a C on someone’s jersey until August.

Agree. Also, December payment commitments are probably worthless in a system where the market value changes by the day/week/month.

If Nico ends up with 50 cents on the dollar from what he was set to make at UT, maybe that ultimately resets some of the market values given how public it went.

This is the same thing as any professional taking a job and immediately interviewing for a “higher paying one.” You can certainly take that path, and maybe disloyal is the wrong term. We work for money. That said, it’s somewhere between selfish and untrustworthy. Before you make a deal, you should make sure you’re comfortable with the terms and then live by them. Just my opinion though.

...until after the tranfer window closes.

I am guessing that since Pena was sniffing around on deals to leave before last year...

Fran prolly thought - he leads by example omn the field. Bump his NIL deal and make him captain and he won't sniff around for other deals and do me dirty as team captain with a new topped-off deal.

He did him dirty anyways (on some bad agent advice most likely.)

I did see some chatter on SM that the situation is fluid and he's not 100% on leaving. Not sure if any of that chatter is true or if Fran left the door wedged open for him even.

Just like the hoops transfer portal it's money first and then playing time next. Pena was going to be on the field plenty and be paid well (not as much as the big dawg offers but enough).

However if Hixon's new offense is only going to target him half or a third as much then that's a problem for him when Sundays come. Also remember Fran was asking Pena to become an elite punt / kick returner which may have been a way to keep him involved as much as possible to help Special Teams but likely would've taken offensive reps which may have been a problem for Pena. *Good way to get Injured is taking every return rep with a special teams unit that has not been great...

People want to pretend it's schedule or deficiencies from people leaving last year. It's none of that crap. We're building the offense overall around what Rickie can do, not pretending like we have a replacement McCord or that Pena will put up the #'s he did last year.

I used to work with someone who would say “some folks believe a signed contract is the beginning of a negotiation, not the conclusion.” Retrading is not a good look if that is what happened.

You can still sign a contract to take effect in the future.

A lot of players were still getting paid outside of just a scholarship. Just because Pugh wasn't getting anything extra back then doesn't mean it wasn't happening at other schools the "BAG MAN" was a real thing. It was all under the table then. Now that the cat is out of the bag I don't know how they can put it back in. They will almost have to go full pro sports model at this point with contracts, salary caps, etc...

Oh I know, but is there certainty that he did? That makes a difference in the discussion, imo.

Didn’t Brown recently say he wasn’t worried about the portal because he loves his players and they love him. Rude awakening. Money wins out over love.
