I also think there’s a little bit of a need to put up good numbers again to have a chance at the NFL. It sounded like Peña doubts he can put up the same numbers at SU as he did last year. It also sounded like Peña isn’t a leader in the same way as Lequint and others were, being a player first and team leader second. Someone offered him more money, life changing money, to go somewhere with a better chance to make highlight reels this year, in a role he’s more comfortable with. Fran certainly seemed torn between advising him to go and wanting him to stay.

Don’t really get drafted or make the NFL on College numbers though.

I love the transparency and totally agree that the incessant cloak-and-dagger nonsense from coaches (and fans) is exhausting.

It’s so much easier to judge the situation knowing that Pena wanted a massive raise and Fran thought that made no sense. I agree with Fran.

Now we know this wasn’t SU being penny wise and pound fooolish, which was my concern yesterday.

And this is why I’ve come to prefer pro sports in so many ways. You know the details on contract offers and final deals. You know if your favorite team is being cheap or judicious. Very happy to get that kind of insight in this case.

Isn't brutal honesty part of Fran's brand?

He is who he says he is.
Recruits love him, even with negative BS some schools try to use (looking at you Shady)
Love the community and cherish's the fans.
No cloack and dagger BS.

I don't think there is a villain here. Kid is making dough while he can, and Fran has set a limit on what an oft injured slot receiver is worth. Pena was a valuable piece last year but new day. I'm not blaming someone for leaving because of a C on the jersey or a coaching acronym. Kid wanted a bigger check. We said no. Moving on for our next entry or exit.
