This is prompted by SWC's thread on Brandon & maybe it should have been just a response in that thread.

However, I believe that Dion has a much higher upsaide than Brandon. He is not afraid to take the shot, he is faster, & more athletic as compared to Brandon. He is much more of a "natural" scorer than is Brandon. Though Brandon is physically stronger than Dion, Dion plays as strong or stronger than Brandon. I haven't seen enough this year to say if Dion's D is close to Brandon's, but probably not much difference in the Zone & Dion's speed might make him a better man defender.

All in all, I think Dion should be a starter. To me the question is who does he replace ?? For now, I would say Brandon & give Scoop a few more games to get his act together.

One thing I have noticed Brandon does alot is fall down/slip. Almost as bad as Devo.

It's OK to have Triche as the starter if you swap Fair or Southerland for Christmas. You can't go 5 minutes without scoring at the start of a half or you'll be in a deep hole against good teams. We've got lots of useful parts, and everybody has a role on this team. It's about matching the right parts to the situation.

Dion needs to be as smart as Brandon.

Small sample against inferior competition, but ... 12 assists, 2 turnovers in first 3 games.

I could do w/o some of those forced mid-range shots. Seems like Dion is good for at least 2 of those per game.

Honestly, who freaking cares?

People get too hung up about starting [versus finishing] and positions. I'm just happy that we have three experienced backcourt players that are interchangeable and can play together in any combination, and a fourth [MCW] with a helluva lot of potential. Hope it keeps practices competitive, and that this translates into better game play from this unit. JB has a great situation--he can ride the hot hand, and he has options on the bench that are just as good as the starters if said starters aren't getting it done.

But in terms of start versus bench--I don't think it remotely matters. Waiters is going to play starters minutes as the 6th man, just like Scoop / Kris both did two seasons ago.

Absolutely. The power to bench a player can only help with some of our less heady players. It is a luxury we have not had in a long time.

Not trying to hijack thread (but I cannot post new posts) so...

One thing that I have noticed in the last 3 games is, like everyone else has noticed, is that our depth is outstanding and that we have a lot of guys that have bball talent (not always the case).

I think it has to be very tough for opposing teams to (a) scout us, and (b) figure out how to defend us. If you are an opposing coach what do you do? Press doesnt seem to work, zone doesnt seem to work, man doesnt seem to work, uptempo is a death knell for other teams. Maybe slow down four corners type stuff? And how do you attack us? There is virtually nothing inside. This is probably the longest team I can ever remember. So instead of worrying about what we do against others...think about how other teams look at us. I have now seen UNC, Kentucky, Kansas, Duke and Uconn play (in addition to OSU) and frankly other than UNC, I am wondering how those teams stop us (and given they dont shoot it great...I wonder even how they beat us).

One thing that I love right now is how relentless we are especially on the offensive boards. Usually against smaller teams in the past we have struggled, but we have taken these teams so far out to the woodshed. Everyone wants to get theirs and show they belong. We really have some nice problems.

Nice post.

Why can't you start new topics?

So far all we have is a very small sample size against inferior competition. Nothing should change until we see how the team and each individual player plays against better competition.

Second is the need to consider the team dynamic. In 09-10 the team seemed to take off when Joseph and Scoop subbed in for Triche and Jackson or AO. That does not mean they should have been the starters then or that others should be the starters now. I suspect CJ and Dion will each end up w/ more minutes played at the end of the year than at least 2 of the starters. That is what is more important.

I would also like to see a compariosn of Triche's numbers when he is paired w/ Dion or MCW and not Scoop. To my eye, in the limited sample size so far, Triche looks much better when he is not out there w/ Scoop. Chicken or egg?

okay, I root for 'Cuse overall and I do like BT; I believe with the right mind set that Dion can be better---but he has to be as good utilizing his teammates, making decisions and playing defense. I was one of first on board to point out that Waiters and Triche maybe the best combination of guards...I would not go to this point except some are pointing out Triche's weaknesses although we have played 3 games and the competition has been weak; however, in my mind, Scoop has been the least good of the three under discussion. He looks flatfooted, lack of bounce, quickness and not up to his emotional self...I am concerned that something is wrong with Scoop. Nonetheless, he and BT start; but I feel the better combination is BT and Waiters.

For the most part, as long as the minutes have a positive correlation with production, I don't care who starts. Maybe Waiters would get complacent if he cracked the starting lineup, maybe Triche would sulk more if he was taken out, but largely, it's not worth diving too deep into the rabbit hole.

Thread over.

it always says i need to create a poll.

This happened to me for awhile; one of our fellow-posters helped me out. Click the compatibility button up there next to your address bar and you'll be able to post.
