and that doesn't include our punt from the 36

we are the all time greatest team at gaining 50 yards with no points

Stanford says hold on a second- I think it was 10 trips inside USC's 35 and 13 points scored. In that regard, SU has done a good job this year of following their model.

Yep, was going to make a similar post, 35 to the 10 is the zone of death this year. For a long time it was the close redzone for Marrone. Those teams had a ton of trouble punching it in from close.

Hunt is money from the 10 in.

The last two games they have done what I was talking about after CMU, generate more yards per attempts. If they can keep that up and run the ball well, which they didn't against ND, the 3rd down conversions and points should come. The improvement in chunk plays the last two weeks have shown that Hunt is capable of making those throws, run game has been good for the most part the last two years. It's up to McDonald and Lester to get it going together, improve efficiency and they be where they should be relative to last year and where they need to be this.

The QB is good enough and the supporting talent is good enough to have the points catch up to where they are in total offense, which is top 50, which is much better than last year. Improve 3rd down, score some points, that will help the defense and six, seven, eight regular season wins are in reach.

The offense doesn't need massive improvement or overhaul, just better execution in key spots and areas of the field.

After the Nova game, I wondered what Lester meant when he said the red zone package needed Hunt to be executed. At the time, I never would have guessed that the red zone package was simply to have Hunt run the ball.

Almost to a fault so far this year.. we move down the field. we get to 30, we then slow down change our packages/personal and struggle.

1) we dont power run well the oline never seems to get push when a D knows its coming
2) Safeties are closer to the line
3) teams run blitz more or stack the line like ND
4) side to side stuff works worse since again more people are closer to the line
5) we dont run skinny posts, fades, TE pass plays that good teams can run.

on the flip side.
1) we lost a TD against Mary on a hold
2) we threw a wheel route vs maryland that was well designed but thrown OB
3) the INT vs maryland was a TD had hunt heard the play and thrown to the correct WR
4) Vill we didnt have hunt so probably score down there at least once and game over much earlier
5) we cant kick so maybe we need to more aggresive
6) the estime non hold call was probably a TD if caught instead it was an INT
7) we have had 2-3 times a oline penalty stalled a drive down deep.. that is fixable 2 drives against ND the penalty yardage stopped a first down.
8) all that poor effort if it just becomes avg we score 14-21 more pts both games and are probably winners.

its much easier to try and fix execution issues in the red zone than fix the whole offense.. maybe they need to be better at quality control/self scouting.. Are we tipping off plays?

the maryland stuff was just things that go bad.. 2 TD and a FG down there on what they called and just bad execution.

what is clear we cant over come mistakes.

nd drive 1) we commited a 2nd down false start tried to run 3rd and 5
nd drive 2) tried to run moore 3 times inside the 20 and took PF
nd drive 3) a missed PI call on a well designed play leads toa INT
nd drive 4) TD
nd drive 5) pass, pass, false start , pass but again a missed PI call would have put us inside the 10.
nd drive 6) 4 passes from the ND 45

we mixed it up some,

Game1 , Villanova: Hunt out in first half , Wilson couldn't score. Game2 CMU : Scored plenty. Game3 , Md : Refs took 7 off and pick 6 would have been 7. Game4 , ND : Scored 7 and refs missed PI call that would probably have resulted in 7 and made the score 28-22 midway thru the 4th quarter against the No.8 team in the country who played for the National Championship 2 years ago and has 4 and 5 star athletes stacked 4 deep at every position. We will see how much Stanford scores on them.

Good thread. We've figured out how to be talented enough outside the red zone, now we need to get over the hump and score points consistently.

The consistency should come but based on last year I was hoping to have already seen more improvement.

17 pts in regulation against Villanova, I don't care if Hunt didn't play a snap, that's unacceptable.

CMU - scored a lot - 31 points on offense, 9 on defense. Minimum expectation.

Umd - as others have pointed out, 20 pts on that many yards is hard to do.

ND - I was expecting less than 10 offensive points so they met my expectation, but those were based in part on the three prior games.

This team should be scoring more. Period.

What do you mean 17 points against Villanova is unacceptable ? The coaching staff decided that when Hunt went out they would take the game out of a RF QB's hands , which is coaching 101. The Nova staff correctly diagnosed this and the game became a pitched battle. CMU they scored at will. Maryland jumped them and things got sideways and no one will score much on Notre Dame. THERE IS NO DISERNABLE TREND.

The trend goes back to last year.

McDonald has a problem, and he has to get it fixed. It's on him, it's all on him.

Once is a data point, twice might be a coincidence , 13 of 17 games is a VERY DISCERNIBLE TREND.
