SU Defense A Bit Banged Up But Cam Lynch Says They Will be Fine (PS; Mink)
Twelve practices down, and that means only three more before Syracuse closes the book on spring practice.
The squad moves to a Tuesday-Thursday schedule this week before finishing up with Saturday's annual scrimmage at the Carrier Dome. From there, it's all recruiting. Thespring evaluation period opens Tuesdayand runs through the end of May, and these are always some of the most important dates for the program as it starts to draw up and refine its wish list for the 2015 class.
Of course, this is also the last week the coaching staff can give on-field instruction to the team until preseason practice starts in August. Soon the burden falls on the players to conduct their own voluntary practices to polish up what has been installed this spring. In the second half of a scrimmage last week, the offense got the best of the defenseduring the live portion open to the media. But practice painted an incomplete picture because the defense was without several key players in the back seven. The time off will help. So, too, will the influx of freshmen in order to better distribute reps.
"We have to fine tune things and learn how to play to the fourth quarter, that's all," senior linebacker Cam Lynch said, asked to evaluate the state of the defense toward the end of spring ball. "Once we get everyone going, once we get the incoming freshmen coming in to help us out, help spell guys, we'll be fine."...

Former SU Recruiting Target Chad Kelly Dismissed from Clemson Football Team (PS; Mink)
Clemson has dismissed quarterback Chad Kelly for "conduct detrimental to our program," head coach Dabo Swinney announced Monday.
"He has had a pattern of behavior that is not consistent with the values of our program," Swinney said in a statement. "I hope he will mature and grow from this and become the man and player I know he can be. I wish him nothing but the best in the future academically and athletically."
Kelly, a native of Niagara Falls, is the nephew of Buffalo Bills Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly.
A dual-threat quarterback who would've been a redshirt sophomore for the Tigers in 2014, Kelly was recruited by Syracuse and ranked as the No. 8 dual-threat quarterback in the class of 2012 by Rivals.
Kelly appeared in last season's 49-14 Clemson victory at the Carrier Dome, completing his only pass attempt for 6 yards and picking up 28 yards on two rushing attempts...
Expect the ACC to Once Again Play an Influential Role as Playoff Era Begins (CBSSports.com; Dodd)
It's not the sort of anniversary many remember. But ask John Swofford. He recalls the day his conference may have saved itself, at the same time saving college football.
It was about this time a year ago that the ACC announced a grant of rights that effectively stopped conference realignment in its tracks. The musical chairs league-hopping that almost tore the game apart was all but finished when the ACC members agreed to a grant of rights.
“It was a very pivotal point, not just for our conference,” said Swofford, the ACC commissioner. “I think it settled the overall landscape with the major conferences.”
It also put the ACC in a leadership position that continues today. Not the leadership position. Don't get upset, Joe Bob SEC. But Florida State did break the SEC's stranglehold on the national championship. Notre Dame joined the conference in everything in football. The Irish will begin this year a scheduling agreement to play ACC teams that benefits both entities in the playoff era.
The ACC is also considering its own network. Presidents were impressed with the potential reach of the league (including Notre Dame), when presented with demographics last year by a media consultant.
It starts with the grant of agreement that essentially legally locks teams into their conferences. If they leave for another league, the previous conference keeps their TV rights. Swofford was quietly instrumental in convincing league presidents to go all in on a conference that just a year ago looked shaky...
