UConn Beat Writer Says UConn Looking to Schedule SU

They are really late to the table with this; SU already has agreements in place with Nova, St John's and Georgetown.

It will be interesting to see if anything happens on this front. With 3 games against former BE schools, the ACC-B1G challenge and the annual preseason tournament SU plays in, there isn't a lot of room for another tough game on the schedule, especially one that requirements playing in an area Syracuse historically does not recruit.

But the alums in the NE area would appreciate it. If it happens, I would think it would be a 1-1-1 deal like Georgetown, with the 3rd game in MSG.

Linkage
It takes 2 to tango. I hope SU is not in a dancing mood.

According to the UCon rumor mill, the acc ASKED US WHETHER WE WANTED THE vILLE OR ucON TO COME WITH US AND WE SAID the Ville. In reality the Ville came after us, only when Md bailed.

To further illustrate my point about UConn's arrogant/ignorant fan base...

The below comments are from a thread on The Boneyard asking 'Which Old Big East team would you rather start a series with?' To be fair, it is a poll and Syracuse was the school that garnered the most votes.

"Cuse fan base is nothing but envious, what would playing us do for them is something they might have the nerve to think or bring up if it happened..."

-Right because Syracuse is the school asking for the series, not the other way around.

"Cuse was UConn's greatest rival from our fan base's point of view. But their fans never could embrace UConn. It bothered them that we superseded them on the national scene...They plague the media with grads who nail UConn at every chance they can. NO way Cuse. Let them become irrelevant down the road and let our rivalry be Michigan State and Ohio State!!!!!"

-Let Syracuse become irrelevant? Somebody's a little confused over there. SU is the team in the ACC, UConn is the one in the 'ACK!'

"Screw Syracuse. I dont want to help their program at all."

-Damn, as a Syracuse fan I was so counting on UConn's help after we got rejected by the 'ACK!' and had to scramble for that ACC invite. Now how are we going to attract recruits? Who would want to play Duke, UNC & Louisville regularly when they could go to UConn and play SMU and East Carolina?

"I don't see what Syracuse brings that Georgtown or UL or even Nova wouldn't."

-Maybe 35,000 asses in the seat and a annual ass-kicking. Other than that, you're right.

In fairness to them, yes, I think we are all a bit envious especially when Calhoun got that third title with Kemba Walker, when they were merely a middle of the pack Big East team that year. Whatever else you say about Calhoun (bully, etc.), he got more out of his teams in the tournament than JB has. 2010 and 2012 were missed opportunities. We really could have used another Final Four out of the past few years to even the scorecard.

I also agree with the second quote - from their perspective we were their biggest rival (along with Pitt, whom they met in the Big East championship about 6 times in the 90s and early 2000s.). They have over-achieved us, but now they are going to turn into a mid-major.

From their perspective, maybe playing Georgetown would keep their profile high among Eastern Corridor recruits, if they can't play us, but with us having Duke and NC to play every year - along with a very deep collection of teams with brand names that the Big East could no longer match, there is absolutely no need to play them again. Let them turn back into UMass or Northeastern or URI - a fine mid-major out of New England who can beat a few of the big conference teams from time to time.

And this is why we should only schedule these teams OOC. I'm still hoping UConn can stay relevant and have a shot at #16 in the ACC (assuming PSU, Texas, WVU are off the table), but for now, Georgetown, Nova, St. John's and BC gives us all of the NE coverage we need. Absolutely nothing to gain by playing UConn.

Now, if we meet in some pre-season tourney that's okay. But I wouldn't outright schedule them if I were JB.

Cheers,
Neil
Agree with all of that. If Calhoun was still on the bench JB might have some motivation based on friendship. But, with him gone why help them gain legitimacy. They are in a horrible conference and will slip into obscurity.

Nova, GTown, SJU games? Great. They are all great match ups from the original BE. Storrs, don't need em.

if they want to play us get involved in one of the preseason tourneys we are in and that's it

Grant the no quarter. Watch them die on the vine.

Wow. The emotional reactions on this subject are fun to watch.

With your schedule, there isn't much need to have UCONN on the schedule. And we have more to gain than you. No doubt.

But those thinking UCONN is going to die slowly may be very disappointed.

There is just an enormous difference between UCONN and those other programs you mentioned. How many of them can spend 2 times more money on their BB facility than what SU did?

I know you like to down play Ollie's history, but Sam Cassel Jr said that his Dad's admiration for Ollie had a lot to do with his commitment.

With Ollie not really being able to recruit until well into the summer, he is one player away from putting the finishing touches on a class beyond almost any of Calhoun's.

With a full year, who knows what he can do? We were involved with more top recruits this year than any I can remember.

yeah, every school in the country is now coveting ucon over cassel jr

I, for one, would rather beat UConn on the court than simply win by letting them fade into obscurity. There's no fun in pointing to the scorched earth of where your enemy used to be, unless you were the one to actually do the scorching.

Don't you feel the hatred in this thread? The absolute, unadulterated animosity? Doesn't it just give you the chills? Why would you want that to fade away?

My worst nightmare is for my children to be reading the archives of this board ten years from now and them asking me what "" means. And their father, now a grizzled old man, will have to tell them the legend of Marsh, he of that glorious catchphrase that was once the SU fan's standby.

We did beat UofL and they did pretty good last year, iirc.
UL pulled out of the Cassell thing. Plus you needed him BADLY. I assume Boat leaves next year, Napier is gone; Samuel would be your only true PG (Purvis obviously is more of a 2)

Ollie has been throwing a lot of schollys around, but he's gotten some talent for sure.

I can't speak for everyone here, but I always knew Ollie would be ok on the recruiting trail, at least at first. I don't think anyone expected to UConn to get only get 1 or 2 star players this year. The harder sell will be in a few years (if) UConn is still in the AAC.

UConn is going to be like Memphis they will recruit decently, but their conference is going to be mediocre and they will have to schedule up in the non-conference because their conference schedule will have maybe 5 of 16 games versus NCAA competition. The rivalry is over and we may play them in the Garden, but we will never play in CT again unless we are in the HOF tipoff tournament at the Mohegan Sun. I get you aren't the indicative of your fanbase but I have only been mistreated at two places during my time following Syracuse 1. Morgantown for a football game where the WVU fans are just classless to visitors and 2. at UConn. UConn fans hate Syracuse fans and as a result treated me ridiculously. I get every fanbase has morons and I am sure UConn fans have been treated horribly at Syracuse, but the demand to play UConn is ridiculously low in my mind. I would rather play 1. St. John's 2. Georgetown 3. Villanova 4. UConn of our former rivals, and we aren't going to schedule 4 former Big East schools a year therefore I hope we never play UConn again in the regular season. The ACC isn't likely to expand in the foreseeable future thus the two schools shouldn't play in the regular season. If Blumenthal didn't personal name several ACC officials by name in the lawsuit I think UConn is in the ACC right, but he did so we won't be playing anymore.

UConn may reach a point where they will lobby to re-constitute the old Yankee C0nference. After all, they were a charter member.

Like Memphis?

Like Memphis if they had 3 recent NC's and the most expensive BB facility in the universe and if they had tons of NBA players.

Will UCONN take a step back? definately. No Calhoun insures that.

But the UCONN brand means something in BB nationally. We're getting OOC games with people like Kansas, Florida, Texas, Stanford, Maryland, Indiana, Washington. Don't think Memphis ever did.

If it turns out that the Dome is rocking and jammed to the rafters for games with Fl St or Clemson or Miami or Wake Forrest etc, then you probably won't play any games with UCONN.

LOL- Ollie knows cassel sr so cassel jr must be awesome

Cassel Jr was recruited by Marquette, UCONN, UofL and FL -

I think Pitino and Donovan know a bit about player evaluation.

Here is Calhoun on Purvis:
“He’ll be in the NBA within 2 years. He’s the most talented, a Ben Gordon/Rip Hamilton-like player. He can dunk, run full speed up the floor and stop and shoot”.

Washington, Texas, Stanford, Maryland are all decent games but not anything to be envy of. Kansas and Florida are good series and they will help your SOS. Florida knows the SEC sucks outside of Kentucky and they always play good teams in non-conference games. UNLV won a NC in 1990 and made to other 2 Final Fours in 1987 and 1991 and what happened to them. UConn is going to be like Memphis and that isn't an insult Memphis has done real well for not being in a good league.

The Dome will be rocking for Louisville, Duke, North Carolina and an ACC-B1G game every other year along with Georgetown every 3 years. UConn was good but they never had the Dome venum that Georgetown had that was more of JB vs Calhoun rivalry. FSU, Clemson, Miami, Wake Forest are no different than Seton Hall, DePaul, South Florida, Providence, Cincinnati, St. John's.

We'll see.

But it ignores the huge advantages that UCONN has over Memphis.

It would be like saying that now that SU is in the ACC with multiple NC winners like Duke, UNC and UofL that you will be relegated to one of the ACC teams as a clear level below them. I reject that thought - yes the top 3 are at a different level than SU, but SU is much closer to them than they are to NC State or Virginia or Wake.
