UConn postgame

David O wasn’t supposed to cover down that field in theory - he had the deep curl but continued to run with the receiver. IMO it was a hell of a play by him. Great awareness of the situation.

I think Deuce should have made a harder play on that ball.

Thank you. I wasn’t being critical of David O or his effort. I’m being critical of the decision to have an edge rusher in coverage when 1) we aren’t getting pressure on the QB and 2) there are probably a dozen or more players on the roster with a skill set more compatible for that assignment, in that situation than David O.

When he was hired out DC said he wanted his defense to hunt not fish. Having David O assigned to deep curl on 4th and 10 is like trying to trick the QB with your new lure. I’d rather see David O pressuring the QB and one of our DBs assigned to deep curl in that situation.

It almost worked. Great effort by David O, but an even better catch by the receiver.

Why have David O in coverage on 4th and 10?

Usually when you see an edge drop into the flat which doesn’t happen often, a coordinator will send a linebacker on a blitz to still generate some pressure and not only send 3.

Let's hope that Clemson is still having these issues in 2 weeks.
Clemson has some great pieces (and tons of raw talent) and will improve, but I could see SU going in there with nothing to lose and making a great game of it. I don't think the team was ready for the moment against Tennessee, and I don't think they were ready to match UConn's intensity as it was basically their Super Bowl.

Against Clemson, they can be the hunter again.

We will find out how much Clemson has improved Saturday vs GT.

Random thing from yesterday that frustrated me was our final possession of the first half. We had one timeout left and completed a pass deep in UConn territory for a first down. There were 20 seconds left. We should have spiked it immediately but we let it run down to 13 seconds while we figured out our play. I thought that was a disappointing lack of awareness that may have cost us one more shot at the end zone.
Thought the same thing.. Only thing I can think is that they thought they had the defense in a bad matchup or something they hadn't adjusted too and wanted to go after it.

I’ve been saying this in post after post. Reece in coverage game 1. Now David O. Erob needs to stop reinventing the wheel. Rush 4 DL on pass downs and stop the gimmicks.

I think because of Kyle last year, people are expecting more out of Angeli. Yes he came from ND, but he has very limited experience. It’s a completely different scenario and it’s going to take time.

OL can not handle a stunt or a delayed blitz. UConn saw the tape and replicated what Teneesee did. SU took forever to adjust, and Angeli took some big shots.

Hated the two 4th down tries in the first half. I didn’t mind the call to go for the first one, but absolutely despised the play call. Trying a sneak on 4th and 2 was god awful. The second one, I just wanted the points.

The one thing that continues to disappoint me is the inability to just drive it down someone’s throat. Our line is supposed to be so big and overpowering this year and we continued to try and throw way too much. I wanted to run it right down UConn’s throat and overpower them. I like Nixon a lot as a pass catcher but he leaves a lot to be desired as a runner. Willis needed to get more carry’s earlier In the game.

Heck of a play on the 4th down by UConn but chestnut completely failed the situation. You guys are killing EROB for the play call. But they had perfect over under coverage. Kid made a tremendous 1 handed catch in the only spot the ball could be delivered and chestnut just watched it all happen right in front of him. HE NEEDS TO COME DOWNHILL ON THAT AND DRIVE RIGHT THROUGH THE MIDSECTION. If he comes downhill on that line a safety should, game over and no overtime.

The way Fran talks with confidence and dart. I almost feel like the team lacks that aggression he talks about. I want to see us overpower teams like UConn and punish them. On both sides of the ball. That’s where I am a little dissapointed. We keep getting bigger and more athletic and yet it seems like we are still going through the motions at times.

Came here to say this. Would also have loved to see Duce drop the hammer, but I think that the safely position is coached differently with the targeting rules as they are. More focus on knocking the ball loose, Duce made an effort but has to punch through the ball in that situation.

Otherwise though, just a hell of a catch by Bell in blanket coverage. Defense did their job and executed, kid just made a play.
