All over the local Raleigh evening news tonight was Mary Willingham, former learning specialist at Chapel Hill who says she "routinely committed NCAA violations, but then lied about them, particularly as it related to the academic readiness of high-profile athletes."

In a survey of 183 UNC-CH athletes who played football or basketball from 2004 to 2012, CNN reported that 60 percent read between fourth- and eighth-grade levels. Between 8 percent and 10 percent read below a third-grade level.
Stay tuned, this lady is out for blood. She is getting death threats if you can believe that.

Has anyone ever flunked signing a letter-of-intent?

It's a systemic breakdown from college to elementary school. How the hell did these guys get a passing grade on the SAT?

Emmert has got some serious issues moving forward as he claimed they are clean, but they are not.

Maybe she didn't get that signing bonus afterall;)

Are you really surprised?

Where was she when all the UNC investigation crap was going on? Did they muzzle her?

It's the Carolina way.

It's the American Way outside the Northeast. And we aren't "lily white" up in these parts either. There is a particular virulent strain in the football culture of the South, however.

Yeah, let's be honest about this - college sports is a business regardless of geography. Take the University of Binghamton mens basketball team for the last few years, or UConn mens basketball. The welfare of the collegiate athlete was not primary at those schools.

But these kids aren't being exploited, they're getting a free college education!

Right?

RIGHT?!?!

Not sure I agree with this. I mean, these kids somehow magically getting a college degree is probably the best thing that could possibly happen for all of us -- even if it's based 100% on cheating.

That's simply not true. Every college football coach I know is interested in developing the whole person, not just the player. I mean, what about all the character lessons? Don't those count towards a student's GPA?

Ask oneself this question. How in the world do we spend so much on education, more than anyone else in the world, and get such poor results. It's a real tragedy and yet the union establishment says that more money is the answer.

I was really just trying to emphasize that it is not an issue of geography, this sort of stuff doesn't only happen in the South for instance. No doubt there are coaches who believe in, and advocate for, the scholar athelete.

the whole student athlete thing is such a farce. 95% of these schools don't care about any of it. Too much money involved. It's all smoke and mirrors, grandstanding and BS. The opportunity is there for those who truly wish to receive and education. , half the kids who pay to go to school, don't care about getting and education, just the next step in the life process

And people get angry and Clowney for wanting to sit out.

As Kaiser would say, bring in the cattle

I'm going to state that it goes back even further than that...
Having taught in a in a high poverty level public school ( 75 % free lunch ) I can assure you that All4 is absolutely correct.
