UNC Postgame

-A couple of things I don't understand: taking Freeman out with 2 minutes left in the first half when he was the only one giving you offense the entire half, and then you give up a quick 6-0 run with him off the court.
-Then, to start the second half, he pulled Freeman after like 2 minutes again, and UNC went on another run.
-Then in the first like 8 minutes of the second half, when UNC extended to the massive lead, Freeman had 2 shots at the basket in 8 minutes and wasn't getting the ball...

Like, after your star player has a first half like that, where he proved he can compete with Wilson, how do you not go to him? Especially as you just watch UNC pile on the lead while other players are just chucking up shots?? Like what is going through the coach's mind? I just don't understand why you wouldn't feed the hot hand???

Same thing at the end of the game Kingz 3 bang Kingz 3 bang time out JJ drive and throw stuff up JJ drive and throw stuff up JJ drive and throw stuff up the next three times down the court Like does our coach not pay attention to what is going on in the game??? I truely dont understand.
Red's substitutions are mind blowing. They make zero sense.

It’s insane. I can’t defend this take. The ACC has been atrocious since UVA won their title. The BE was infinitely better for most of the time we were there. After expansion, from 2008 to 2013 the conference had at least 7 tournament teams each year. The ACC has had 7 tournament teams once in the past 7 years. Every other seasons it’s 4 or 5.

That doesn’t even take into account the fact we rarely lost to the Hofstras of the world back then. Recently the conference has been Duke, big gap to Clemson and UNC and then some random school. Duke would have had 4 or 5 losses in a season in that conference back then.

Agree that’s just a super naive take…

If you like pain and suffering, watch the game again and count how many open shots NC took vs how many SU did. Will probably be about 40-3. We usually at least have ball movement for a few minutes per game, but this game we decided to go one-on-one from start to finish. A bold strategy.
At least Donnie made himself some money tonight.

Posting this again for those who won't see it on a particular other thread you may not want to read. It's too important for everyone not to see. Pat Forde is a national reporter for Sports Illustrated.

Great re-post because you're absolutely right. We have such a good brand but image won't last forever without reminders of what that brand is about. People have such a short memory span. If we start kicking ass again, most will forget that we weren't doing that all the time.

It’s already too late. It’s about damage control and a slow gradual return to relevance rather than an abrupt return to being a national power., this all could have been so easily averted if grown ups made decisions based on the best interests of the program rather than the best interests of individuals. We are where we deserve to be

Just as bad as Kiyan not seeing Freeman underneath. We lack the IQ to be good.
I think you are being very generous on Kiyan “not seeing” Donnie. I hope for Kiyan and the team chemistry sake you are right but dang that looked like Kiyan already making up his mind he was shooting once the ball was passed to him after our rebound.

Seriously looked to me as one of the most selfish plays I have seen. Again, I would love to be wrong.

14-4 conference record in our inaugural year…the 25-0 start. 106-110 conference record since.
Here is your answer... look at there recruits from before 2013 and after. See anything concerning? (thank you SWC!!) Ranking the SU recruiting classes

We basically stopped recruiting 4/5 elite ACC level players and had maybe 1 or 2 elite ACC level players. Combine this with lazy coaching that didn't change with the game and there you go.

Red's best team was year 1 - when the players stopped listening and just did whatever they wanted. The players literally coached themselves. Maybe this year's team should give it a shot.

It was absurd, but I kinda miss the Judah & Quadir show. At least that club showed some life.

Call me crazy but there were a lot of trash big East teams for a long time that cuse and JB beat up on. If JB was in ACC his entire career, don’t believe he wins nearly as much as he did. This program has been awful since joining the ACC because the teams are better. The players are better and the coaches are better. No mystery that the product of the program has declined massively since joining this conference
I would have guessed there was a bigger difference in winning percentage than 15%. I think it is also how non-competitive SU has been in many of those 114 losses compared to their losses in the Big East.

I also don't think the ACC is necessarily better than the Big East was. There were some bad Big East teams, but some of these teams at the bottom of the ACC are not any better.

i had the feeling donnie freeman knew there were eyes on the game last night and just decided to take it to UNC and showcase his stuff. clearly nobody else came to play . it was donnie vs the tar heels. good but not enuf.

Donnie was excellent in the first half. Second half he was okay. He needs to develop some moves to get some easy baskets. His post game is dreadful.

It would also help if his mates fed him the ball when he was open in the open court.

I think it’s easy to forget how good the Big East was from 2000 to 2013 because Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Villanova, Marquette, and West Virginia aren’t relevant right now.

But when those teams were playing good, competitive basketball in the 2000s and early 2010s that conference was absolutely better than what we’ve seen out of the ACC the last decade.

And you can’t tell me Georgia Tech and Boston College are any better now than Rutgers and Seton Hall were back then.

I think Bulldog meant more of the bottom of the conference. They are both bad, but the bottom of the ACC is maybe a little better than what the bottom of the Big East was, that’s not saying much though. We had an easier time beating inferior competition in the Big East, but it’s because we were better at that time.
I think you'd have a difficult time proving that too. But, what's a more difficult conference to have a good record in - one with 8 top 25 teams, 11 NCAAat bids and 4 bad teams; or one with 3 top 25 teams, maybe 6 ncaat bids, 9 mediocre teams and 4 bad teams?

I'm extremely impressed how the guys kept fighting last night. Turning a 32-point lead into a 6-point lead in like 6 minutes or whatever it was is completely insane. I turned the game off and then my phone started blowing up.

Since we were only down 6 with a minute left I'm going to reclaim my pregame gut feeling as not being stupid. :)

Donnie vs Caleb. Scouts were watching and Donnie showed up and held his own.
