UNC Postgame

I think it’s easy to forget how good the Big East was from 2000 to 2013 because Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Villanova, Marquette, and West Virginia aren’t relevant right now.

But when those teams were playing good, competitive basketball in the 2000s and early 2010s that conference was absolutely better than what we’ve seen out of the ACC the last decade.

And you can’t tell me Georgia Tech and Boston College are any better now than Rutgers and Seton Hall were back then.

Red's substitutions are mind blowing. They make zero sense.
They’ve made zero sense all year….for 3 years. He’s the worst coach in college basketball and it’s not close. And I was as big of a supporter as you could be.

I stopped watching 2 weeks ago. I had withdrawal at first and now it’s irrelevant. They are losing core fans. I cannot believe JW hasn’t canned him. Maybe it’s just a respect thing but Jesus

Alternate universe thought bubble: Donnie doesn’t get injured and close losses turn into wins against Houston and Hofstra. Because he and the team get used to playing together earlier and don’t lose chemistry, we also turn close losses against BC, Virginia Tech and maybe Clemson into wins. We could be 17-6 or 18-5 and we’d have 2-3 Q1 wins. However, this is a gauntlet coming up, so we’d still be sweating a bit, with bracketolgists predicting we’d be in the tourney currently but still have work to do. The easier games left would be against Cal, Wake and Pitt, but none of them would be guarantees. We’d also be hoping to nab one more Q1 win against SMU, Virginia, UNC or the Ville. Duke would likely be a loss. I know Red isn’t a good coach. But do you think we make the tourney if Donnie hadn’t gotten injured (and we were a halfway decent free throw shooting team)?
The problem with this is that we can’t assume a win against Houston if Donnie wasn’t hurt. Obviously that’s not how sports works. The dynamics of the game would have been completely different.

Maybe he shoots terribly and we lose by double digits? Betsey played 30 minutes and scored 16 that game. With Freeman playing maybe Betsey gets 10 minutes and doesn’t score at all? I mean, we lost to BC with Freeman. I don’t think we can assume any game would be won just because he was present.

This team stinks (yes, stinks) because it has lousy leadership.

Yup, by every measure the ACC was dreadful in the 5-6 seasons before this one. It was essentially a PINO… Power conference In Name Only.

This is my argument for letting him go now. Sends a message to the core fan base. These past 2, almost 3 years are unacceptable, and the next month doesn't matter and doesn't change what has happened. We are making a change regardless. I think that is the message the core fan base needs. There might be whispers he is gone but until he is gone, he isn't gone.

Here is your answer... look at there recruits from before 2013 and after. See anything concerning? (thank you SWC!!) Ranking the SU recruiting classes

We basically stopped recruiting 4/5 elite ACC level players and had maybe 1 or 2 elite ACC level players. Combine this with lazy coaching that didn't change with the game and there you go.

SU stopped along the way of having guys stay 4 years that went into the JB development camp. Much easier for a kid to bounce than put up with it. And guys departed for the draft earlier than JB anticipated.

Rules changed and the program didn't adapt well.

Got the wrong guys in the backcourt
Both starting Guards have had their moments. I fully believe with a better coach, they'd be much better. JJ in particular has been good when he sticks to what he does well and a good coach would have him do that.

Posting this again for those who won't see it on a particular other thread you may not want to read. It's too important for everyone not to see. Pat Forde is a national reporter for Sports Illustrated.

we kinda did an intervention 3 years ago but it was a half assed intervention at best

Did not bother to see the game. Going by the box score, as usual, JJ and Kyan cost is the game.

This is bad… didn’t need to be like this. What a horrible hire.
or decision to bring him back for 3rd year...like you couldnt tell through the first 2 years that he's probably (almost certainly) not the guy to get back to a high level

I don't know if we stopped recruiting them or if it was more that we were no longer landing them. The Ennis departure was never anticipated (one & done) and then, if my memory serves correct, we consistently missed on our main PG targets and settled for Plan C & D types. Same kinda deal at the 5 spot, especially after Christmas was finished. Many swing and misses.

What I think sort of happened is when JB got older, he stopped casting a wide net and became hyper focused on certain players only (my guess is due to old age didn't have the energy to travel all over and watch a bunch of games anymore), and when those players dragged out their recruitments and picked someplace else then we were left scrambling looking for someone anyone. I remember this happening a number of times and the board became extremely frustrated.
