UNC Ruling

One can dream. But, in reality it doesn't help us or the conference if UNC's athletics program gets reduced to dust. While I would like to see them knocked down a peg; as an SU and ACC fan, I am not in favor of seeing a draconian penalty imposed because an irrelevant UNC hurts us in the long run...especially with all of the negative noise circulating around Louisville and Miami's hoops programs.

What happens to ACC basketball if UNC, Louisville and Miami are all on probation with signficant recruiting restrictions at the same time? The quality of basketball in the conference goes down and it gives one of the other conferences a chance to make in roads into ACC dominance.
I guess my baseline standard here is is it's has to be worse than the footnote pot smoking penalties.

Their basketball punishment will be unprecedented:
ten years of scholarship reduction; starting at 4 per year for two years, 3 per year for 2 years, 2 per year for three years and 1 per year for three years.
forfeiture of all games where any scholarship player would have been ineligible if not for the course, including tournament games.
probation for 5 years.
fines.
suspension of Roy for 10 games.
recruiting travel restrictions.

I think a letter with strong words not to do it again is what they are going to get.

I find it amusing that Miami is included in your post with UNC and Louisville. I understand why, but still find it funny.

I disagree that Louisville and UNC being severely punished hurts SU. Nature abhors a vacuum so it would be a perfect time for SU to move up in prominence if these two teams are taken out. Imagine if the game with the biggest cache nationally on ESPN was not UNC - Duke (because UNC was going to be noncompetitive), but SU - Duke; if the ACC MBB Tournament Title Game included SU because Louisville and/or UNC were down?

The ACC has too many good to great teams and programs to truly fall because these two programs will (hopefully) be knocked down a peg.

I hear what you are saying, but if there isn't a significant penalty, schools will just breathe a sigh of relief and think they'll just have to be more careful with the "incentives" in the future.
Severe penalties to the "chosen" may start a conversation much like has happened on this board, to address how athletes should be handled from recruiting through their playing time in college. Anything less is just saying we shouldn't rock the boat too hard because we don't want to change the sport(s) the way we've gotten used to seeing them.
As for worrying about another conference taking advantage of something serious happening in the ACC, I think we may just be seeing the tip of the iceberg now that the FBI is involved. All conferences will likely be hit in one way or another. If it rises to that kind of level, the NCAA will truly have to sht or get off the pot lest they become as inconsequential we already think they are.

Tick Tock Tick Tock

Can't wait to hear about UNC Women's Rowing Team getting punished! The big punishment will be the 1-5 football team receiving a bowl ban this year. What a doozy that would be!

There will be very severe penalties, but sadly none of them will impact the men's hoop program. IF the hoop team and Roy do get hit the Feds have given the NCAA a hint that Roy is in some deep woods in their investigation of Kansas.

I hate this argument. That's how punishment of organizations work. You don't absolve or ignore sins of the past. You punish the organization at the time you prove your case. All individuals of the organization and university should suffer the fans, alumni, administration, students, employees, the community and yes the players. That ensures that everyone works diligently to make sure it doesn't happen again.

And the tweet ignores the fact that the NCAA (or schools hoping to get in front of sanctions) routinely punishes the program with a post-season ban even if the players on the team were not part of the violations.

And in this instance every single player at UNC was completely aware of what they were walking into.

In this case I feel bad for Mike. Fandom is a delusional thing.

Gotta think they're losing a title and a ton of wins, losing the 2018 postseason and a number of scholarships, and going on probation for five years.

I immediately stand corrected. Jesus, what a joke.

You owe Mike a beer.
