UNC Ruling

this makes us look like complete boobs. I'm less concerned with UNC and more concerned with the legal advice SU is getting on how to handle these NCAA investigations. We either have the worst juice in the political world or our leadership was inept in dealing with an investigation.

Terrible day for Syracuse and how we've handled our stupid infractions.
I was thinking the same thing. We clearly had no sense of how the game was being played in the world of college sports in 2017. How could we be so lost as to how the world works, and everyone please spare me the "we wanted to do things right" spiel. SU got dictated to, UNC and Penn State provided the dictation.

That was my post from last December. Not sure exactly what was or was not worked out behind the scenes but this is not a surprise. For the NCAA to truly take a hard line stance here would basically require them to create a new arm regularly reviewing the validity and standards of college courses and attendees. That is clearly something they would want no part of.

Once again, the problem is that they are more than willing to do it via the clearinghouse for incoming student athletes. Moral of the story may be that once they get in the door, the focus on the true academic requirements are off of the Board.

Good post. We might not like it (I don't), but it's consistent. Based on what little I know, though, it looks like the NCAA bent over backward to misrepresent this as a university-wide problem rather than athletic academic fraud. That doesn't pass the smell test - what purpose would real students have for taking fake AAS classes? They're only there to learn and get a degree, so what's the point? It was obviously fraud set up for the purpose of keeping athletes eligible. Just because non-athletes were involved doesn't change the obvious purpose or effect.

I mean, there's a reason SU's law firm from 2012 is no longer SU's law firm. And it's not just how they handled the Bernie thing...

Or the NCAA was going to punish SU no matter what, and UNC was going to skate no matter what. Doesn't matter what was argued either way. It sounds like the NCAA found every excuse possible to avoid having to punish UNC.

Why ws this non-announcement postponed last week? 5 level one violations? Institutional control?

Who was the firm/lawyer?

We plea bargained for a heavy penalty. Think about that for a second. WE are dopes. Simple as that.

School needs to grow some balls or find someone who can play grab *ss with the folks in Indianapolis. Boeheim certainly didn't help the situation with his grandstanding.

Terrible day for SU.

Interesting observation. The only point I would quibble with is the one about "regular students". Unfortunately, I think many see college as the means to an end and their final GPA, semesters on Dean's List, etc. being just as important or more so than what they actually learn.

Nah, it's not any kind of day for SU. They paid the piper and we get to watch college hoops in a month. It's all good.
