"Florida State University regrets that misinformation about the provisions of the ACC contract has unnecessarily renewed the controversy and speculation about University's athletic conference alignment. Florida State respects the views of the Chair of its Board of Trustees that, of course, any university would examine options that would impact university academics, athletics or finances. At the same time, Florida State is not seeking an alternative to the ACC nor are we considering alternatives. Our current commitments remain strong."

It does not bode well at this point. The president can do all the damage control he wants but if the BoT wants out of the ACC then FSU will be gone. The real question becomes is it a one off or does someone go with them as a traveling partner.

Still a stupid comment for a BOT to make publicly. He sounds like a greedy hot head. BOT members, however, do and say dumb things on occassion. I hope that the president's response is more than just damage control.

Not only will they be gone to the Big 12 they will find a new President as well...lol

The damage control is what it is, but in this instance its too little too late

Meh. I for one could care less. First, it's telling that it is the Big 12 and not the SEC sniffing around. Damaged football brand (though certainly with enormous upside- which will likely never be reached in Big 12), underachieving in football, relatively average olympic sports except baseball, which will be hurt by conference switch, and below par academics (relatively speaking).

While as a newcomer, it seems hypocritical to wave bon voyage to a conference flag bearer, FSU would be far easier to replace then say, UNC. Let them go and add Louisville, UCONN or Rutgers. Its practically a wash. This isnt 1996.

I've said this in another thread and I will say it again. ESPN is not letting their biggest brand name walk out of a conference they just signed a 3 billion dollar deal with. Ain't gonna happen. We're very lucky to be in bed with the devil (ESPN) on this one. FSU isn't going anywhere.

I look forward to the FSU board telling their booster base that their closest road trip will be 14 hours so they can get the extra couple million necessary to pay their overrated, overpaid head coach.

Schools have the right to join whatever athletic conference they want. If FSU thinks the B12 is best for them, so be it.

Now, literally every other school that has switched conferences in the past couple years has done so in receiving a major financial/athletics brand upgrade. Some schools have gotten an academic brand upgrade as well. Hard to argue that FSU wouldn't be taking an academic brand hit moving to the B12. So then it entirely comes down to finances. The calculation isn't terribly difficult -- a few more million in rights vs travel/related logistical costs. Guess we'll see.

FSU has only been in the ACC 20 years, so I suspect most of the deep-pocketed boosters aren't as attached as, say, the one's from MD, UVA, UNC, etc.

Oh well, as an SU fan I'm taking the Ivan Drago approach. To paraphrase, "If they leave, they leave". My alma mater is still in a much better spot than they were a year ago, and that's not changing. If anything we'll end up with a couple more old friends in the conference.

Is syracusefan.com considered 4th tier rights?

syracusefan.com is the apex of all things

but that haggard guy is a loose cannon for chairman of B.O.T. as he has numerous statements on warchant.com and even lobbied to have the ACC exit penalty reduced from a potential 34 million$ down to 20 million$.
he's the type that will have personal problems no matter what conference they are in.

Well boys (and girls),
This sure beats talking about new uniforms, off-season workouts and dome upgrades...

Isn't it kind of sad that all these schools are whoring themselves out for money? I mean long lasting traditions being severed for the almighty dollar. Marinetto was right, intercollegiate athletics is over.

Basically what we have happening is consolidation. All the top flight teams/brands moving to a smaller number of conferences. The Big 4 (or 5) should just branch off and do their own thing. I mean essentially, that is what is happening now.

One of these days some Tv exec and big wig Conference commissioner is going to propose an NFL style format. The top teams in divisions based on geographic regions (not conferences) and get a similar nfl style payout. This will go a step further to cut out the smaller players like the SU's the Duke's, the Vandys, the Iowa States, the Washingtons, The Cals, the Indianas the Northwesterns etc. That will OFFICIALLY be the end of intercollegiate athletic. We're on our way to that path.

1. Consolidate to top 32 schools/teams...
2. Set up divisions...
3. Put out RFP for TV rights...
4. ?
5. Profit

Marinatto would have been right if he said that in, say, 1952.

The concept of "student athletes" and the notion that major college sports isn't entirely about money has been dead as a doornail for decades.

In all of our lifetimes we will see all college athletes get paid. And we will see college athletes unionize. It's just a matter of time, it is moving in that direction at a rapid pace.

Agreed, but to an extent, everyone was still pretty happy up until around 2000. Now its obscene amounts of money where a school like aTm throws away 100 years of tradition for regular beatdowns and basement dweller status for a few extra mil.

Agree. That will happen when the top 32 teams break away. They will say, we are not a part of the NCAA, we are doing our own thing, are going to pay our own players, and are going to get our own tv deal and playoffs.

What we will have is a MLB style setup...

1. MLB = the 32 break away schools
2. AAA = Existing BCS conf level schools excluded from break away schools
3. AA = MAC, A10, BE teams

The stakes (meaning money) may be higher now, but conferences have been in a constant state of flux forever. Pre-2000?...

- Arkansas bolts its long history in the SWC to join the SEC (who needed a a school to get to 12 to have a conference championship game because the dolts at the NCAA applied a rule originally enacted for D-3)

- Amidst a torrential downpour of cheating and corruption the SWC implodes. The Big 8 merges with the 4 major Texas schools of the SWC, leaving the remaining 3 to die (also when the TX governor forced Baylor into that group of 4 because she was an alum).

- The Big Ten adds Penn State who leaves behind 80+ years of being an "eastern" oriented program for the money of the Midwest

- The Big East forms a football league, which means schools like SU are now playing Miami and VaTech regularly instead of long time series with Maryland and Navy

- The ACC loses South Carolina to the SEC, then years later adds Florida State, who abandons longtime series with Metro Conference schools

- In a rush towards creating the first mega-conference the WAC expands to 16, then promptly implodes and the top brand name program bolt to form the Mountain West

Etc.

That's just small sample of what went on all of 20 or so years prior to 2000.

People seemed super happy, right?

But they already did just that. Before the new deal was done there were light rumors of the B12 being interested in FSU and Clemson. Swofford was looking for arbitration as he wanted $21 million per team. The deal ended up being $16 million per team. ESPN could have protected its investment by giving the ACC the $21 million it wanted, which BTW is still well under market value. ESPN may have dropped the ball here.

Depends who goes with them. If the B12 adds just two teams then you have a point. If they add 4 or even 6, then the travel argument goes right out the window. Lets be honest here the best thing for the sport of CFB is for the nuke option to happen to the ACC. Get down to 4 power conferences and let the champs battle it out for the national title.

That's simply not feasible. From an on-field standpoint, even w/o FSU and, say, Clemson, the ACC still has VaTech and Miami, along with brand-name institutions like UVA, UNC, Maryland, etc. You might have been able to freeze out the Big East, but you cannot freeze out those schools. From an off-field standpoint, closing the door to 4 conferences guaran-damn-tees Congressional involvement. The net of that will mean the NCAA being forced into administering a playoff, and then all the $$$ the BCS is meant to protect is now gone.
