I am in the camp that Dino is perfectly happy in a low pressure coaching environment like Syracuse but with USC and UCLA (June 2020) both getting new Athletic Directors (and I assume new football coaches) this off-season it should put an end to the debate/rumors either way.

UCLA isn’t getting rid of Chip. USC - a lot in the air.

Yep, for whatever reason UCLA (if open) would worry me more than USC, but, I don't think they move on from Chip this year. They spent a fortune to get him. USC has a huge game this weekend that I think makes or breaks Helton. He lost a bad one last week, and it's simply a matter of when they choose to move on. Dino would have to get to 8 wins this year to really be on their radar. Should that happen and USC open, I think Dino would be in that 4-5th option range. Urban, Franklin, USC grad, Peterson (perhaps) I think would be higher on their list.

All that said, until USC actually hires someone new, I will be worried. LA is definitely the market Dino would thrive and I think the AD's out there know it.

I am not following your rationale. Because there are new ADs coming, they won't hire a new head football coach? Don't most (egotistical) administrators want their "own guy," especially in the beginning stages of their tenures?

We have one thread where people are legit worried that we'll lose to a MAC team.

And now another thread where people are worrying that we'll lose our coach to UCLA or USC.

Only in America...

now we just need a thread where someone suggests strategically losing to a mac team to avoid losing him to ucla or usc

That's not what he said. He's assuming new AD's will hire their coaches. If that's not Dino, those new coaches will get a few years before another change would be made, so Dino to a Los Angeles school would be off the table for a while.

We stink so far this year. Doesn’t look likely that we’ll have the kind of season where you worry about your coach getting snatched.

Most USC fans are expecting Urban Meyer if Helton is replaced. Dino is not high profile enough to be a backup option to Meyer IMO...especially with how this year has gone.

That said, I think 7 wins is enough to buy Helton another year. USC's schedule is loaded so he'll have the chance for a few signature wins and I think Slovis is talented enough to get him there.

I think he bolts for USC if given the chance. He doesn’t seem to be able to recruit at Syracuse and it’s probably frustrating for him. He would kill it at USC

Holy crap, Sports by Brooks is back!?! Didn't he disappear for like 4 years?

Dino is doing well with recruits. Too many fans think that everything changed when Dino walked in the Dome door. Kids need to grow accustomed to SU winning and HCDB staying. He knows what he is building and he knows he does not have unrealistic expectations of NC's being won annually.

  • Dan Guerrero is retiring at the end of the academic year, so we'll see if the new AD doesn't have the patience for Kelly.
  • Looks like Meyer is headed to SC when he comes out of retirement. He's admitted to missing coaching.

Yes and no. I agree with you that the recruiting should see an uptick but at the same time I really doubt we'll ever be in a spot where recruiting here is easy or, perhaps more accurately, as easy as many other places in the country. Not a ton of talent in NY and tough to keep that talent at home regardless. Tough to keep up with the factories on a facilities basis. I mean Penn State is really the only program in the northeast (MD, Rutgers, Temple, Cuse, BC, UMass, UB, Pitt) that has shown any kind of sustained success and much of that has to do with the fact that A) they aren't really a northeast school and B) The absurd prolonged success of the guy who was harboring a serial pedophile gives them a distinct advantage on a brand level.

Is Dino OK with that additional challenge to building a consistent winner? I don't know the answer but it's clearly a hurdle we have as a program and others around us do as well.

That’s my point. 4 and 5 star(star ratings... I know) kids go to USC regardless of wether or not they’re winning. They don’t need to grow accustom to anything. Recruiting is practically built-in. We’ve missed on every QB after TD and almost every WR.

I hope he stays but he might get to a point where he goes to a place where recruiting is a little easier.

I think USC will fire their coach this year. The biggest problem they have is recruiting. In 2019, 3 out of the top 25 California recruits chose USC. In 2018, 9 out of the top 25 California recruits chose USC. The 2019 recruiting class ranked 20th which is the highest ranking they have ever had in the 247 database. For 2020, they are currently ranked 43rd with 2 4*s and 10 3*s. In 2018, they had one 3* recruit.

USC is one of the best jobs in the country and you can win a national championship there. Any football coach would love the opportunity to coach at USC if offered. My guess is USC will go after Meyer as he seems a good fit. If Meyer turns them down, I think they look for the best current college head coach available and I would think Babers would be on the list of candidates.

UCLA is another matter. That is a tougher job with less institutional support and Kelly's contract would be tough to swallow. My guess is that he gets at least another year to try to right the ship.

Unless SC wins the Pac12 this year, Helton is getting canned. Hopefully, they land Meyer and stay away from Dino. Definitely would be worried if they make a run at Dino. He would crush it there. The recruiting is super easy, the one thing Dino struggles with here.
