South Florida went to a true freshman quarterback last night who played really well. They are a bad football team and they took Houston to the wire largely on this kid’s back.

The thing I noticed from a USF perspective is that it seemed like they really simplified the offense, whether it was for him or not who knows but it worked. Lots of easy quick hitting passes. They didn’t drop him back and wait for receivers to try and get open 40 yards downfield.

Ya wonder if we can’t simplify the playbook if one of the true frosh shouldn’t get a serious look. They just need to be able to be on target with simple throws.

I also really miss the quick hitting underneath pass (across the middle) in our offense. This play is a gimmie and Houston feasts on it. It’s an easy pass.

They have better receiving talent. We have pretty much none...

I also watched that game last night and have to admit I was thinking similar thoughts. Seeing two true freshmen out there made me wonder... then again, if we are to the point we need to turn to Kimble or Wilson at this point in the season, we won't have to worry about a bowl game.

i didn't really see any downfield passes last night. primarily a short controlled passing game and quick hitters. what i saw was WRs make plays. The longest pass play of the night that I saw was about a 7 yard pass that the WR caught across the middle (where a LB would be standing at the snap) and the WR took it to the house.

Most offensive coordinators completely over thinkfans fill their schemes with complexity.

At the end of the day, what's simple can be best. Look at the Kansas city chiefs. There may not be a simpler offense, and it works. It's not technically fun to watch, but it gets the job done. And I dont care how the ball is moved, moving the ball is more exciting than throwing interceptions.

Not sure which game you were watching, but I definitely saw some longer passes (15-25 yds) and a couple of nice fades. I was incredibly jealous.

i watched about 15 minutes. I'm only speaking with what I saw. I also saw OKorn make some shitty passes and WRs bail him out. One fade in particular would've hit the defender in the back of the head had his receiver not gone up and got it.

When I watch games like this i think it's easy to see how bad our WR's are. Our QB(s) would look better if we had D1 wideouts,...and I also I think the O-coordinating is playing to their strengths.

didnt one of the great coach's say something about they had 8 plays and everyone knew it- but when you play them right they cant be stopped

The only problem I see with a "short yardage" approach is that long, sustained drives tend to be killed by penalties, which we are prone to do. On the other hand, I like being able to control the clock and keep our defense fresh.

Interesting observation, in one of the game last night, either this one or the Bengals-Dolphins game last night (yes, I was flipping), they mentioned that the coach told the QB to throw at the back of the defender's head if he has his back to you... I wonder if that is common teaching?

I agree that both Houston and USF appeared to have wayyy better receivers than we do.
