I’m wondering if they might have to pivot quickly from Poch before this program is staring at not making it out of the group stage next year the way things look right now.
Then again who knows if it even matters who’s at the helm. The problems are further up the chain as much as anything.
I'm probably a bit more bullish than most (which clearly is not saying much since I am not particularly bullish).
However, I did see this team gel somewhat and play hard. Happy about that.
I also think Poch may have found some contributors...Tillman, Luna; possibly Berhalter and Agyemang. Among the guys we know, Richards was really good. Happy about that.
Unfortunately, the bottom 3/4 of the roster just doesn't have national team talent level. Not going to beat Mexico with that.
And while Mexico did not have all their first team guys either, they had more of them than we did.
3rd game in a row with the same starting line-up and clearly no real desire to go to the bench. That just isn't going to work in a tournament setting with games every three days. Especially in summer heat and humidity.
Really disappointed in Adams last night. Turnover machine. But he was far from the only one. I think I counted on one hand the number of times we handled their pressure and needed the fingers and toes of most of our neighborhood to count the number of turnovers in our own end. Brutal.
I just think guys were gassed. They were gassed against Guatemala and you go with the same exact line-up? Makes no sense other than Poch thought that DC at 70% was better than Brower at 110%.
Although, to be clear, I don't think this team beats Mexico even if our guys were rested. Mexico dominated
And the goals:
Freeman marking nobody so Berhalter steps out to take the wing and Adams slides to take Berhalter's guy. Nobody (probably De La Torre) slides to take Adams spot and the result was that huge channel of space behind Adams. Still, on that little through ball, why does Ream not step? Pretty sure Jimenez is offsides if Ream steps forward rather than back. Then he has to scramble as he kept Jimenez on while out of the play.
On the second goal, same issue with Freeman. Why step so far back? Not even in the play and he is keeping Alvarez? onside.
Attention to detail.
On Tillman's break away, he had Agyemang on a little through ball once the Mexican defender stepped and instead chose to continue to carry it right into traffic. Not that Agymang would have scored but make the right play.
Attention to detail.
Not bullish but not completely bearish either. probably somewhat less than mezzo-mezz right now.
I think we just have to see how the year plays out and, hopefully, all of main guys are both healthy and in-form at this time next year and hope we get an easy draw.
