This game has final possession written all over it.

This could get ugly. Motts is the perfect guy to pick apart the middle of the zone. His triple double proved this last year. They can put shooters everywhere around the perimeter. If we start out slow again this game, the game may be over by the ten minute mark in the first half. Our hope is that we have been pretty good against them at home. Jesse should be able to score in this game, but he’s not shown up in the last four games.

Cattoor and Pedulla can shoot the 3...
Lynn and Basille give the Hokies some size inside so Jessie
might not have a lot of room to operate.
Jessie and Joe got to have above average nights and Mintz
has to take over when needed for CUSE to have a chance.

Really need Jesse to be a force tonight. He needs to alter shots, rebound and have a solid offensive game. Va tech plays physical and Jesse needs to play strong. Hope Benny plays and need him to be active and hit some shots to open up the floor. Padulla is a very good player but I think Joe should be able to get shots vs him. Won’t be easy but this is a must win.

Cuse!

This team has the athletes and the numbers to press effectively and has done it against UVA and Pitt with great success. Opposing coaches get their players in a positive mindset about how to deal with the zone and they get comfortable and have good shooting because of that. Throw them a curveball, start the game pressing, then go to the zone D and continue switching it up. Get them thinking about 2 things and out of their comfort zone.

your first sentence is something we need every night if we expect/hope to win. Jesse is the only game changing player we have on the team. He needs to be big all the time.

This will be a tough one even without Cattoor. They have a lot of experience so I expect them to be prepared to attack the zone, it's just a matter of execution. Them having 3 other guys who shoot 35% or better from deep means we'll have to hope for a down night, which isn't impossible, seeing as they're shooting just 30.1% from deep as a team during their current 4-game skid.

On offense, I don't think this will be the night Jesse gets out of his rut; VT has 3 guys 6'9" or taller and they're all pretty bulky. That's a lot of fouls to give. I think our better bet will be to get out in transition and then when we're in the halfcourt to swing the ball around and create driving and P&R angles, which is no different than usual but given the matchup is especially important tonight. Could be an opportunity for Brown to get more run and build off his game against Virginia.

I love tough ones against teams who are winless in conference missing top players.

Start Brown and Taylor at the forward spots. Not even sure why this is a discussion.
Until Benny can play consistently and until Bell can do something besides shoot a jumper they will come off bench.

Stop allowing ourselves to get in a 1st half rut. We start soooo slow and then the other team gets hot from their wide open 3’s terrible!

We can beat this VTech team if we play the right players and actually coach the game right. Play with effort and intensity. Box out and get after rebounds. Take smart shots and make smart passes. Oh who am I kidding…

3 other guys that shoot the 3 well. Given the tendency to offer our opponents open gym shootaround in the first half...

You're right, we have a great track record of beating struggling or shorthanded teams. Spot on.

Unfortunately, we do very little of any of these things.

They lost 4 straight, I really hope we don’t snap that.
Their last four were all one-possession games, and two were on the road. And other than BC, all of those schools have better fundamental stats than Syracuse.

Well I was… mostly right? Jesse’s line was good and I’m glad he was able to get to the foul line and set up his teammates, but he also missed some bunnies. A lot of the difference in the game came down to us making our threes and VT missing theirs, but that doesn’t tell the whole story.

I loved our ball movement and activity on offense. The team really seems to feed off Maliq’s energy. I’d be really curious to see how Benny would react to getting pulled from the starting lineup. It seems like it’s the only button Boeheim hasn’t pressed with him, but it could be the perfect time.

This post aged very well!

Until the last sentence.
;)

Feel like maybe we're a decent live bet team now.
We know we'll be down after the first 8-10. Hammer it then. We seem to keep it close for the most part

Maybe i'll start tracking it
I mentioned in the game thread...I didnt catch the real time line when we got behind before Bell's exit, but I would assume at worst we were a +1 or so. So thats a cover
