Vermont Gameday...

Face offs are a concern and goalie is questionable. Daly in the goal for Vermont has been really good.

Not sure if it should be a concern but Hottle has been playing defense for a couple runs. I don’t think it’s been because he’s gotten stuck out there.

Hopefully with this sloppiness they come out fired up on Monday...that was a sorry half. Curious how the tick-tack-toe offense will do against a better defense...Looking forward to Monday to see where we really stand.

well i’m gonna give them benefit of doubt that they decided at half to tone it down way much. Cause way looked second half def would not be wise vs towson or maryland. Offense seem to struggle n got sloppy. Way too many penalties (refs called some thought shouldn’t have also). But hopefully towson n maryland game goes alot better.

While it was a win, not how I thought the game would go. Guilty of being a cocky and overconfident fan here. Hopefully a more focused and complete game played Monday.

Face off unit really struggled with Dodge, he ended up 12-18. Mullen finished 8-16, Richiusa went 1-5.

Junkyard dogs did good only giving up the one goal on six attempts but was helped by Vermont tossing the ball away on a couple of the man downs.

McCool saved 69%. Thought there was one, maybe two, he should have had. Gotta be careful on the clearing passes though.

Clearing a little more of an adventure tonight. Only two failed clears but they seemed to dance around some more tonight than last week before finally getting the ball across midfield.

For clearing mccool has to get it out or up lil faster. At times he did run it up. But few saves he held little bit before going to defender. He looked good on goal made some good saves. Think needs to work on his passes (to much air) and get ball out and up quicker. Riding team need to move ball fast before set up (can’t guarantee gait has clearing the ride down yet).

Offense looked really good first half. Think game flow and losing focus maby even someone said over confident seem to bite them in second half. They did have some really good looks but didn’t bury them. Also little concerning is entire first mid line had 2pts (rhoa goal, english ast). This def can’t happen.

Also def starting to like english on man down, as gives us someone who can leg the clear if need be. Not fan of kol being on man down (hasn’t cost them yet ) but he normally struggled vs better offensive teams. Really like chuck (#26) not trying attemp spell his last name. He’s very aggressive n active with stick. As someone stated towson def be a good look at this team n then ramps up with maryland. Dodge good fogo n mullen battled he wasn’t beat clean. Thought tried to much go forward even tho wasn’t working , better success when went back to himself. Def could use little better wing play. Last thing def need to work on first time gbs over n over again.

Good stuff, echoed a lot of things I was thinking myself after watching the aame.

Faceoffs are definitely a concern. I think Mullen is putting a lot of pressure on himself with Kohn gone. He ended up at 50% which is fine but hasn't really looked himself yet despite being 60%+ vs Jax. Richuisa as the #2 to me is the bigger concern. I think Johnny will ultimately be fine as long as he stays healthy but Richiusa going 1 for 5 isn't a great sign. I know Angelo is only a true frosh but the staff is gonna have to get him up to speed. As an aside I wonder if SU is going to have to hit the portal for a FOGO this summer. Richiusa and Fine are gone to graduation along with the walk on Lamonica ( I think). Not sure you can go into next year with just two fogos on the roster as there is no FOGO recruit in the 2025 class.

McCool has been good from what I have seen so far but hasn't really been challenged. I worry he's gonna get ambushed a bit in one of the next few games. Agree on his clearing, needs work.

Speaking of clearing, it didn't show up in the numbers but boy SU at times looked like last years squad. Ran dangerously close on a failure to advance a few times. I worry big time about how they will do against a really good riding team or a team who runs a 10 man. I do like English as a Matt Abbott one man clear, he looks improved from last year and seems to be more aware of avoiding doubles and traps.

I will have another post on the offense and the good signs from that end (and a few worries) but the biggest concern for me now is the lack of disciplined play. Way to many penalties today. I think we had 5 in the 1st quarter, just isn't going to work at all against a majority of our schedule. It's been one of the main problems/culprits of the Gait area and doesn't look much improved if I am being honest. We also seem determined to draw an offside penalty at least once a game.

Real big test on Monday. Gait didn't seem overly concerned in his presser on the bad second half and essentially blew it off. Hope he's right. Good news is the defense overall really has been excellent. Yes Vermont did miss a few passes/looks the peer teams on our schedule wont but still another real good performance. That close D unit is nasty Dwan on Pope was absolutely teh right call, shut him down. I assume he will draw Weisshaer on Monday night.

Thomson needs to stop going low, it’s been a save every time after his between the legs goal.
IMO, Thomson is weakest link on SU's starting offense including 2nd middies.

Gait has been around long enough to know that teams can lose focus when they are destroying the opposition. He said as much during the presser.

For those with concerns about dodgers, if you have ball movement like they had in the first half, you ain't gonna need no damn dodgers. Of course, they have to prove they can do the same against teams that are not tomato cans.

as a Matt Abbott one man clear,
#3 matt abbot was a jack rabbit on the clears. as for the FOGO situation yes need to be looking for next year but a bit more help from the SSM wings would help. face offs are a scrum after all .not just one dude .
