looked, seemed strange. I don't know what it was but I thought this unit was much more athletic apparently that was inaccurate. Is the Dumas diet back? My god

Did you see Bromley chase Colter down from behind? I love Cam, but I would think about substituting Kirkland in for him on passing downs or at least give Kirkland the flats and let Cam blitz.

I was talking more back 7...

We have a very athletic secondary. The problem was they got caught with their pants down all night. That's what a running QB does to Shafer's defense. They bite on the fake scramble, then the WR's get behind them and they're caught flat-footed.

Losing Shamarko hurts, but overall this is our most athletic secondary in quite sometime IMO.

I thought the same until Saturday...

I don't think athleticism is the problem, especially in the secondary. I think we've sort of regressed to the Philip Thomas era at safety. It's one thing to bite on a play action fake; it's another to bite so hard that you literally aren't within 30 yards of a receiver. Really poor lack of discipline back there.

As for the LB's, I noticed them taking poor angles of pursuit (Spruill especially several times) that make it look like they are a step slow, but in reality are just making the wrong reads on plays.

Surprised they weren't in 5 db packages early.

I didn't stick around for the 4th quarter (almost left at halftime but a friend stopped by chatting with us so we figured what the hell, we'll stay a little longer). But I noticed in the 3rd quarter that #5 and #10 were in the game for most plays on D. Can't recall who was typically the 3rd LB on the field, might have been Cam. I know it wasn't Spruill, and I kind of remember Davis subbing in and out a lot.

Everything that could have gone wrong in that first half, did. Worst half of football SU has played in a while. Even when something good happened, the TD, they come right back and scored, and then scored again.

I'd even go 6 DB's at times and switch to a 3 man front. Against a team like that, no sense in bringing 4 guys when Colter was just bouncing out of the pocket every play anyways.

Not going to lie, I get very frustrated with Shafer's defense at times. It seems super obvious to me when things should be switched up. I think a basic adjustment could've gone a long way in that game. I guess that's why I'm not coaching football though.

Cam got abused Saturday badly, hope it was just a one game thing but he was a disaster.

I'm kind of surprised they didn't go Okie out of the gate.

The defense has talent what I don't like is the cushion the DBs give most of the time. I don't expect the DBs to consistently play bump and run, but the cushions 7-10 yds of the line of scrimmage gives the QBs an easy screen each play. Bromley and Welch are good players, the LBs are good players, Reddish, Lyn, Morgan are good players. This team has a good defense, and I like the pressure schemes we use, but the soft zone needs to be mixed up. Northwestern has a good offense that is not questionable, but they exposed the soft zone and had players wide open the whole first half and they knew how to expose our scheme. Don't question the kids as we aren't barren on talent on defense its not like the QB position on this roster.

Looked to me like a lot of the blitzes were up the middle and didn't contain Colter. Would have thought the opposite would have been better- come off the edge and force him into the pocket.

Agree that SU should have been in the Okie early on- is it me or is the Wilkes and Eskridge combination weak in coverage?

There was one blitz (one of the few that would have worked this year) where everyone came from Colter's right. If it was Siemian, it would have been an easy sack, he wouldn't even have had a chance to throw it away. But Colter immediately ran to his left. Then up field. Then kept going, and going, and going...
