Virginia Game Preview (2/27/21, 6pm)

I hate to be that guy but that female reporters question made absolutely no sense. Hofstra lost to St. Johns and Utah is 1-2 with their only win against Bellarmine. Someone at SU needs to at least partially vet this stuff.

Sounds like Allie Kaylor from the DO.

Is it just me or was that one of the more interesting and thoughtful pressers Desko has given in recent memory? It is striking that he committed to seeing more of Hiltz going forward which is a bit out of character for Desko. Listening to him there, I do think there is something to the lack of preparation time the team has had but you could tell he was disappointed with the poor communication on D and the overall number of mental errors.

We have a depth chart...

Not necessarily. It said the same thing last week before UVA's game with Loyola and Rode did not play.
they also said it the week before vs army. rode has been "probable" starter all year. plenty of others thru all 4 games are off on probable lineups. they're obviously just guessing and lars isn't really giving them the heads up.
he's so crafty.

Well Rode is back, just our luck.
Rode is inconsistent. Career 51% saves. He was about 51% over the course of the Hoo's championship season. However, he got hot on championship weekend and was above 60% for both games. In 6 games last season he was 55%, 50 % in his only start this season. UVA's offense worries me more than Rode. Final note, in his last appearance in the dome, Rode made 4 saves while allowing 7 goals in relief of Burkinshaw who had made 6 saves while allowing 7 goals.

Forgot that Shaffer Woody played as a short stick in the army game. Didn’t appear to do anything too horrible and fills in the big, strong, and fast requirements. Could be solid in transition too.

Agree - Rode has been inconsistent. Then again, what goalie hasn't been - nature of the position.
We typically make the opposing goalie look better with our errant shooting - I'm keeping my fingers crossed that our offense has their A game!?

Lol HD

Not sure if Aristole personal skills appeals to all players but he is a good coach, his "process" and 'culture' kicked in rather quickly . Do enjoy the style of play he implemented.

Both Rode and Gavin are fine goalies.. UVA open play likely lowers percentages some. One thing to leave media guessing but shouldn't with goalies since confidence key . Burkinshaw never seemed to recover at uva after benching and struggled some for UPenn in 2020

Moore is prime dodger but others will as well, many unassisted goals reflect that . Betrand shoots well with either hand. He was a miss for us and excellent addition for UVA.

Limit possessions and getting back on d are keys -easier said than done.

!) LaScalla @ 63%, his bursts to cage always a worry.
2) First three opponents failed on a 1/3 of their clears, Cuse has do better.
3) UVA playing fourth game be pushing transition even if it results in unforced turnovers. Drop .

It's time for Trash Talk Part Uno -

Broken dishes, bald tires, used coffee filters, empty hot mustard packets!

While everyone looks at their game with JHU as the Big Game of the Year, this game is what a Big Game rivalry really is - equally split, not just in wins and losses, but in the number of goals scored in the series by each team. No one can be sure of what's going to happen until the game is played. Plus, having head coaches in this series who let the players play doesn't hurt its chances of being on the list of the must-see games each year.

I'm really glad that the conference affiliation stuff has been sorted out so the regular, non-COVID, spot for this game has been moved to the end of the season just before the tournaments.

Interesting that Wyoff is listed at close, thought he might get sometime at LSM. Wondering how long before Drago is listed at LSM, heard good things about him. No change in the second mid line but I think that was to be expected. Woody looks like he has been permanently moved to SSDM, good for him.

Hiltz is now listed as the 4th Attack.

I saw that, but wasn't sure if it was just lised to denote him being on the man up. There was no depth chart last week which makes this week a bit of an unknown.

Really cant joke about Charlottesville these days without politics injected

Great town. Beautiful campus and good weather.

Preppy student body wears an abundance of vineyard vines, khakis, lacoste and sperrys. Seems many wannabe alcoholic lawyers and politicians . Blondes still attend debutante balls and know someone who knows someone who knows a minority..

Lax program gets their players from the north to compete and raise their academics.

School viewed favorable by employers . Grads lead the south in hirings and demotions.

not bad.
shame marshall street's closed down so the boys won't be able to wallow in pitchers after.

have to take their beer balls and pbr suitcases to skytop and the run down 1930's houses around campus instead. and kick their shoes off to keep all that gray cinder from tracking in everywhere.

the gray lining... we'll have another 60 broadcasters to send out into the world when it's all over.

Lol. Enjoyed a chuckle at this good humor however true.

I think these lineups in the game notes are more a reflection of what happened in the previous game, more than they might be an "expected" lineup. If you plan on making a surprising switch, you probably don't want to give opposing coaches a heads up. But SU lists everyone who got significant time in order to help out the media members in attendance. Things could look a little different on game day from whats listed.

It is nice to see Wykoff listed, though strange to see five defensemen listed, not even including Staats who they have listed as man-down specialist. Given his skill set, I too am surprised that Wykoff isn't in the LSM mix, he scored a lot for long pole and has great groundball stats, two things that typically go hand-in-hand for a long stick middie. Also would make sense since those attributes seem to be the things you're missing right now with Kennedy down low. Curious to see how they use him. Does he rotate in with one of the starters? Hard to get much cohesion if multiple guys are coming off and on the field.

It is easy to get psyched out by UVA's early season performance following Cuse's extremely poor showing against Army yesterday. I would like to provide a rationale for Cuse performing well against UVA this Saturday. Back in 2019, Cuse lost to UVA 15-14 in OT after some suspect refs calls and Cuse having the lead until late in the 4th. As we all remember, the 2019 UVA team were national champs with a core not much different than this year's team including a powerful offense. If anything, Cuse has more talent and experience now than the Cuse 2019 team with a similar core plus Scanlan, Hiltz. Also, UVA may be playing a frosh goalie this weekend or a "rusty" Alex Rode.

It will be tough as we are still working into game shape but there is definitely room for optimism now and later in the season.

You called it. #respect
