Listened to the Bill King Show this morning. The discussion I heard dealt with Va Tech's 2013 class.

So far the Hokies apparently have the top class in the ACC.

One of the guys they are involved with has received offers from Alabama and Ohio State.

That got me to thinking - we will be competing with the top programs once we become a full member of the ACC - we will have to compete not only with Va Tech, Clemson, and FSU, but with the SEC schools and other top programs.

We will have to bring our "A Game" and that means a few things: (1) better home attendance; (2) a better Dome-Game-Day experience; (3) a new indoor football training facility; (4) more and more football fund raising and (5) of course more wins/bowl games.

Or?

I agree the bottomline is, Syracuse needs to really invest in the program from a financial aspect. I get it, we will never be able to spend like the big dogs but just to keep things at a respectable level and hopefully be able to at least compete, we absolutely have to upgrade and invest in the program in a manner that we never have. The game has changed and Syracuse needs to as well, expecting miracles will not work. Is the university committed? I don't know for sure, or are they happy to cash the check and become Duke 2 in the ACC? It's up to them really but we will not attract top talent with the way things stand right now. Fans won't come back without consistent winning either.

I dont see SU getting into many head to head battles with Ohio State, Bama, Florida etc. While I agree we will need to step up our game I think Marrone and the program realize we cant recruit against the big boys on a regular basis. Also just as important is how the whole conference realignment issue shakes out, if the ACC implodes it wont matter what we do.

Syracuse is not going to win recruiting battles against Ohio State, Alabama and Florida. At least not very often. We do need to win some recruiting battles against Purdue, Indiana, Northwestern, South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Georgia now and then, however. And, of course, teams such as Pitt, BC, VT and Maryland.

I hope the days of being overjoyed at beating out Akron, Buffalo and Temple for a recruit are gone forever.

The ACC will not implode.

College football will not devolve into four conferences with sixty four teams - Congress will get involved before that happens.

And, we will have to win some battles with the likes of Ohio State and Alabama.

In the past two years we have won some of those battles - Michigan, Penn State, Va Tech.

We will have to win a lot more of them in the near future to truly compete in the ACC.

One of the points of the original post is that Va Tech is Ohio State and Alabama. That is the reality - we will face very stiff competition in the ACC.

We have already succeded against the likes of Michigan, Penn State, Maryland and Va Tech.

We just need to do a lot more of it.

We will be making more money. These things are what the money needs to go toward.

A few things to note about VA Tech.. They aren't quite Alabama and Ohio St in recruiting circles yet. They OWN VA recruiting though and most notably they have the tidewater area pretty much on lockdown. I liken this to Marrones attempts to lockdown NYS.

We are making progress and if we can pull off an 8-4 season (won't be easy, but not out of the question), I believe the tide will have turned for us. I feel like this season could really be the stepping stone for us to jump back to top 25 level with recruiting. Our staff identifies top talent early and having a ticket punched with an 8-4 record and bowl game this year would thrust us back into the national scene.

I do believe our administration is focused on getting the football team back to national prominence. I think the hardest fight is for fund raising. Sadly, the economy isn't great in the Syracuse area right now, but the foundation has been laid and TGD has really done some great things. Just need a little luck on our side this year (because it's eluded us long enough)!!!

I dont know exactly how this will play out but if FSU and Clemson do bolt (which could absolutely happen) we definitely appear to be headed toward the 4X16 model. Congress cant even agree on simple governmental issues for our country they arent going to save college football and really they have no power or authority over the situation. While SU has mixed it up with some of the big boys recently ie ND, Penn State, Miami etc for recruits that is the exception not the norm. To be honest I cant recall where SU beat out Michigan or Va Tech for a recruit recently. (The TE from Michigan Thompson had his Mich offered pulled).

SU just needs to continue identifying kids early and going after who they think best fits there system. This program is not ready to start targeting national kids against the big boys on a regular basis.

Congress loves this kind of issue.

No political fall-out at all for going after a sports issue.

Congress controls money. Secondary education depends upon federal money.

Congress can apply pressure and even the crazies will get involved.

Off the top of my head, I believe that Robert Trudo had a Michigan offer.

I think Joshua Parris had a Va Tech offer.

I do believe our administration is focused on getting the football team back to national prominence.

These two things are huge factors moving forward. The staff that is currently in place has done a terrific job of identifying players that are under the radar early. We will never be able to compete with the likes of Alabama, Ohio State, etc., if we start recruiting the same player at the same time.

HOWEVER, we CAN compete with ANY school if we begin developing and cultivating relationships with players at earlier stages. And this is exactly what the staff is trying to do in NYC and NYS as a whole.

This is a basketball recruiting story, but same basic principle - small Northeast school has been to a few NCAA Tournaments in the last few years, gets a commit from a kid from the Midwest in the early signing period.

Absolutely no reason he should be committing to this school, except for the fact that that school had recruited 6 or 7 kids (successfully) from that same school district over the last 4-5 years.

One thing leads to another, kids start talking and bam - a small school that had no business getting a Top 100 recruit gets him, after taking a few kids from the area that were at a lower level but had developed into really good players over time.

This is how the game operates. And it can operate the same way in football.

Administration support is also very important. Many may not like Gross or Cantor for many reasons, and I don't necessarily disagree with some of the points. But they are at the very least committed to athletics and the football program specifically.

There are a ton of schools out there where the University president HATES athletics. Absolutely despises them. So be thankful that you do not root for a school that has that type of administration. Or else it could be much, much worse.

Good call on Trudo pretty sure you are right on that, he was a great pickup. I dont believe Parris had a VTech offer but we have recruited against them in the past with some success so I am sure we will but heads if the ACC stays together.

I think your opinion of Congress would apply if we were talkign about the 90's under Clinton when the country and economy were booming. However in todays current economy and state of the Country I dont know if Congress will have the time or the leeway to take on that type of issue. Millions of americans could care less about college fooball ( I dont know how) and congress is gonna get blasted in the media if they try to regulate conferences and who is a D1 Level BCS school.

Not to piggy back, but if it goes to 4 x 16 superconferences, is there any chance that the other 50 or so schools band together in a monopoly lawsuit?

You're talking about a Congress that takes economic issues seriously or puts economic issues above political angling.

I don't see that kind of Congress these days - I will not offer my political point of view on that, though I have little regard for those who held our credit rating hostage over the debt ceiling issue.

I really do think that Congress loves these kinds of issues because there is really no downside to it.

How much worse could the Congressional approval ratings get?

Too many would lose if the college football market were cornered. Congress would have to get involved.

I think some kind of intense action would be taken - natural economic flow would force a reaction.

One of the kids SU is involved with has offers from Alabama and Ohio State as well - Ogundeko.

Not saying your wrong or that congress would attempt to take action but what exactly are they going to do? Hold a hearing? There not going to be able to force the SEC or Big 10 take the teams that were "left out". I dont see how Congress could save schools that got left out.

(The TE from Michigan Thompson had his Mich offered pulled).

We haven't been in a head to head battle in quite some time but Thompson, as well as Wayne Morgan, definitely had committable offers to Michigan at one time or another. The offers were pulled because their spots had filled up.

I'm sure we're pulling all of our QB offers right now - or at least telling kids the offers aren't committable anymore unless one of our current verbals backs out.

Could Congress start taxing all the football profits and bowl payouts and television deals?

I totally agree but I just wanted to clarify that its a bit different when an offer is pulled versus winning a head to head battle. It doesnt change the fact Michigan offered but you cant really say we beat them out for a player when they no longer had an offer.

I doubt something like that could get passed the representatives from states with Div 1 BCS teams would have to vote against that, especially down south.

Yes, of course hold a hearing.

And threaten to withhold money.

That usually works.
