i believe in free speech but I also do often reflect that the negativty we post on here isn't doing a thing to help this program recover...and likely is hurting the program to be fair.
im part of that so I bite my lip from time to time...but realize that I am also to blame at times
im really torn on this question
we're all "free" to do as we please...but lets be honest...what impact does spewing negativity have? even if it is true...so what?
its a bit of a release I suppose...and people i guess feel that if they let their displeasure be known it might lead to actual change that can help things...
but we all know the decision for this upcoming season has been made...so I think we should ask ourselves what kind of impact are we having with our posts? I know that the noise gets to the players and coaches...and its not that some of it isnt deserved/accurate/factual...but if you are a SU fan...then why possibly contribute in the wrong direction??
You cannot have intelligent, informed, high-level discussion without truth, objectivity, and varying perspectives. Your version of “spewing negativity” is very simply only Your perspective. This is a sports discussion forum—if we aren’t supposed to talk about what we see, why is the point?
Just today, someone on the SonsOfSamHorn site—long known for its extraordinarily high standard of discourse—posted this [Re: Red Sox]:
“Well, there is a lot of pessimism. So, too, is there a lot of Pollyannaish bs. And if you express any skepticism or concern about this or that, that you're not 100% convinced of a future outcome, you're met with screeching accusations of pessimism.”
Well, the Sox have experienced a string of ~last place finishes, just like we’ve seen a protracted downward trend. The dialog matches the context, in my opinion. Not sure what you want. A squelching of honesty, and a promotion of ‘spin?’ Because, what, recruits and transfers will be fooled into signing up because we’re all so super supportive, and because we ignore poor performance?
One rhetorical question you ask says it all to me. “Even if it’s true… so what?” Well, truth maybe means more to me than to you. Truth is not an incidental matter. It is
The matter. But, we aren’t all going to agree on what truth is. Which is the purpose of a discussion forum. Information, discussion, entertainment, convergence, divergence…. No forum worth a damn is just a pep rally for like minds.
When people say they are for “free speech,” except—- one has to question the definition and the motive. Free speech, but only when it tilts one way and agrees with Me?
