The journalists actually seem more confident in Wake's chances than most fans. I'd say optimism probably springs from our having such a putrid offense last year and still playing teams fairly close, paired with the fact that our offense looked good against an admittedly team in Elon last week. Our defense is headlined by a very good nose tackle, a strong group of safeties, and possibly the best linebacking core in the ACC.
Most fans understand that, despite our offensive output last week, our offensive line is still young and weak and our rushing numbers are fluffed significantly by a semi-broken play in which our QB ran for a 70-yard TD. Wolford did look very good, though, and the talent of our playmakers is night and day compared to last year. I'm just not sure Wolf will have the time to get them the ball. Bottom line- I don't think there will be many surprised faces among the Wake faithful if we lose this game by a score or two. I personally think we're a year or two away and am expecting a close loss.
I'm interested to know why you all think Clawson is a douche. I'm not saying that general perceptions are unfounded--we are definitely familiar with a strong hatred of Coach K, among others, probably without enough real proof points to back up the degree of hate--but I would appreciate some concrete supporting evidence. Coach Clawson has appeared to do everything right down in Winston-Salem so far and has universal support from fans. I agree with Jimmy we were due for a coach unafraid to speak his mind and be bold. I have a lot of respect for Coach Shafer and think Wake and Syracuse are both on the upswing.
Hoping for a competitive, injury-free game.
