Was the downed punt the dumbest play ever

not even sure its a legal play. you could argue that it was in invalid fair catch signal since it was clearly meant to look like one without being one and thats a penalty too.

BTW, I went to the Houston Baptist/Abilene Christian game last night and HBU downed a punt similar to what FSU did. The ball could have easily rolled another 5 yards or so. So, if it's the dumbest play ever, it happened twice on the same day. lol

Not kicking a FG with 7 seconds when you were on the 23 and had no TOs was the dumber call.
Especially considering their OL was awful the entire first half.
Taggert gave Dino all the momentum going up 6-0 into halftime after Dino made the worst decision of SU coaching career kicking the FG from the 1 yard line the previous series.

He didn’t signal anything. He caught it and his body language made it look like he called a fair catch. Everyone was in on it. Players started towards the sideline knowing the fake was on.

Loved it

I hated that N Texas trick play. Straight bush league taking advantage of how mindful everyone is of getting ejected for targeting or unnecessary roughness. Same type of stuff when QBs pretend to go out of bounds, then tip toe for another 5 yards because the defender is afraid to hit them.

Some of these rules, while necessary, are frustrating to watch...I’d rather not have players taking advantage of them for trick plays.

Are you kidding? The kid that caught it said he heard the defender ask him why they didn't blow the whistle. It's that kid's fault he didn't hit him, not the "coaches taking advantage of targeting rules".

No doubt, there were some hanging curveballs that should have been hit out of the park that were popped up.

I recall Terrell Buckley of FSU pulling this play against SU back in the 90s. Caught he punt, and stood there with the ball on his hip. When the SU players slowed down he took off and took it all the way.

100% agree with you. It would be the equivalent of a QB pretending to take a slide, the defender lets up, and then the QB takes off running. It's just bush like and unsportsmanlike.

I mean honestly, what do people expect the Arkansas players to do? Approach this N. Texas returner who is standing there defenseless, and think to themselves "well I didn't see the hand signal, so I guess I'll lay this guy out." And if they're wrong and he did give a little wave but they missed it, it would be the biggest cheap shot story in college football and probably get them suspended for multiple games if not the year.

he waved his arms in front of him. this is why they have a rule for illegal signal. if someone did this to SU we would blow a gasket

You wrap him up.

absolutely. That was some crazy clock management there. just kick. But I was confused why the clock didn't stop here. I thought the kid went out of bounds.

He gained 9 yards instead of 10. I thought he was tackled within the boundary. It was just a dumb call because the time to get it into the end zone with their crappy OL could have ran the entire time.
Instead they threw a 9 yard out and let the time run out.

I never saw the knee on TV, but forward progress was stopped and he was pushed backwards toward the out of bounds line. Doesn’t that count as staying in bounds?

that coach could've gotten that player killed. "This play is probably going to work. If it doesn't, you'll die. but it's gonna work most likely."

I didn't think of it that way, but you're absolutely right. Bud Kilmer-esque.
