Noticed a few things. 1) They run shotgun sets but their center is wild with his delivery to the qb. There's a real chance one or more of those snaps gets put on the ground. 2) Wolford has happy feet. Probably due to the beating he took last year (think ARob year 2) Wolford danced around a lot despite Elon not having any speed off the edge. Will be very interesting to see how he reacts to being hit (repeatedly) tomorrow especially given how we treated him last year. 3) Wolford goes through reads extremely quick before checking down to underneath routes. Seems to give up on downfield routes very quickly. If we get to him early he'll accelerate that process even further and throw some short routes that our db's should jump and deflect/pick. 4) Dungey should have time. Unless they blitz their front four doesn't look capable of getting near the qb. 5) They are stout up the middle and well coached on counters but can be had off tackle and outside. They appeared to lack lateral quickness and Elon skill guys were able to get the corner fairly easy when they pushed it out. Elon's skill guys aren't that fast or nearly as elusive as ours.

Anyone else rewatch part of that game?

Great analysis.

I tried to watch a couple of nights ago and fell asleep. Lol.

My plan was to watch the first half but I'm not sure I made the 2nd quarter. I was equal parts exhausted and bored with the game but wanted to see what Wake fans were crowing about and how Wolford actually looked while racking up an impressive box score. He's accurate despite not setting his feet and has a good arm but he looks mentally fragile due to not trusting his oline. Its probably best for his self preservation that he doesn't trust them since they still aren't very good.

Agreed. I watched two series I think.

I think we'll see tons of screens and quick slants and draws... All due to our pressure vs their line.

It's all about player execution but suffice to say if I'm watching that film as a DC I've got plenty I see that I like. The DB's should be able to cheat on routes without fearing a double move. Their QB simply doesn't hold the ball long enough for that to develop and if he does... well

Thanks, IO. Your analysis fits with what the pundits seem to be dancing around while praising Wolford. He could be a great QB if his line were better.

I think Wake will eventually get better but as of now they are very similar to our 2009 team. Patch work oline with a coach that wants to run shotgun with a center who can't snap it well. They don't have anyone on the edge offensively that scares me w/ their top threat out. The transfer WR they got looks solid but not spectacular. Their LB core looks very solid (think Hogue, Smith) but they are small in front trying to keep them clean (think Perkins, Tribbey, Lewis) and think their LB's can be beat laterally like Hogue and Smith also tended to do on occasion.

This game should be a solid gauge to see how far we've come in 5 years. I tend to think we've made substantial progress (albiet not as quickly as anyone wanted) and have a chance to make a statement to the rest of the ACC this week.

Should be an entertaining game to say the least.

I hope our playmakers are on their game tomorrow. We need to get Dungey a lot of help and not ask him to do too much as a true frosh starting week 2.

Ron T, Zaire, Kayton, Simmons, Clark, Raymon...

no easy 1 play long TDs and we will be fine on D. but will our offense get it done.

We'll find out tomorrow but one area I think we could do well is special teams. Ours seem to have been emphasized more and improved with our overall depth. Likewise, this is an area Wake's lack of numbers could be exploited. Brisley didn't play against them last year... he will tomorrow.

Ish caught 6 for 72 against them last year as well. He's a year older, Dungey has a bigger arm than AJ did, and Wake's best CB is in the NFL now. Would love to see a break out game for Ish. Also, a gut feeling but, think the world could finally be introduced to Donnie Simmons.

Center and the guards look like their feet are a bit rooted. Same with their tackles. Also, not exceptionally strong. Didn't see them blow the DL off the LOS. My guess is that we'll be able to stuff the run, and get the edge rushing to pressure their QB into making some monumentally bad decisions.

I like the anaylsis. Spot on

Hopefully we'll see Steven bend some of them backwards

So, the Lewis jet sweep is back in rotation?

Thanks OP for the breakdown. It will be interesting to see how often they bring pressure. Knowing we have a freshmen QB making his first start, I would think they'll bring it often (plus there strength is in their linebackers). While I normally wouldn't be, I'm confident that Dungey can make the reads and get rid of the rock. I see him taking a few sacks, but I also see some chunk plays as a result of the softened secondary. LGO!

Good call. I forgot to mention the amount of push Wake did not get inside vs what appeared to be an undersized Elon D line. I was, however, memorized by the bizarre splits the Elon o line was using. Tackles on the LOS but guards lining up that deep off the ball? I was waiting for flags for Elon having too few men on the LOS.

Plus, we know that Lester will call a screen. That will also help.

If they bring their backers then we could see similar to that jump pass that Erv scored on with any of our H backs in space. I don't expect them to get too cute and get themselves out of shape on defense. It's not what they normally do and they, and their coaches, think their defense can hold us playing straight up. It'll be on us to prove them wrong which is what we're all anxiously hoping to see.

If I was coaching against us, I would drop 7 in coverage until the QB proves he can make the throws. We know Wake's QB can make the throws so it's on us to make sure he doesn't have time to do so. Or course, we're also very much in our element sending pressure from all angles.

Essentially. our NT :) is gonna smoke that center.

Clark reservation for 1 your table is ready.

If they dropped 7 in coverage I would hope we just hand it to DMc and McFarlane all game.
