We better enjoy Ennis while we can..

The more I watch ennis the more I see a smaller jason kidd. Now ennis has a nicer stroke but everything else with his calm demeanor, subtle arrogance, use of angles and using craftiness vs athleticism as well as being a hockey assist guy screams jkidd. Now that type of player is not something found in today's nba. So the question becomes does a team value ennis as that type of pg as a frosh in the lottery? Also as currently a weaker mtm defender? If there is a resounding reason to stay for tyler it is to become a better more committed defender vs a thief/opportunist and getting stronger to be able to finish with contact and showing off 3pt ability. Those deficiencies I dont think will go away this year even if we win it all behind his guidance and would keep him as mid first to late first at best which would be great value for the team that picks him but not ideal for a kid who with one more year could solidify himself as a lottery pick. Also I am greedy as I can see how much value it could offer kaleb to play behind such a smart player.

Kids don't get better at playing basketball while going to college and having limited practice time. Donte Greene could have stayed 4 years at Syracuse and he was never going to be a better pro.
This statement is so wrong. Players do improve playing in college. They mature physically, emotionally, mentally, and do in fact work on their game immensely. You're confusing the concept of the general improvement of their game over time and the specific skill and timing of going pro for each player individually. Donte Greene would have improved his game and became more mature in his professional pursuit thus increasing the likelihood of him sticking in the NBA longer than he did. Whether that time should have been 2, 3, or 4 yrs is something we'll never know.

You better be incredible on offense, if your defense isn't ready. Look at someone like Kendall Marshall. Very good college PG, great floor general type...shaky outside J and poor defensive skills. He couldn't even get on the court for Phoenix despite being the 13th pick and on a rebuilding team, lasted a year with them, couldn't make Washington's team, and is now struggling to get minutes in LA where all the guards are hurt! 13th pick, 22 years old...and he's in danger of not sticking in the league already!

Marshall is a pretty good comp for a guy like Ennis.

But, would Marshall have been taken 13th if he stayed in school? I don't think so.

Would Marshall be in danger of not sticking in the league already had he stayed 4 years? Likely.

People tend to assume (not you) that if a player goes and isn't successful, he made a mistake. Not always true (sometimes true). If the player gets paid guaranteed NBA money (which is better then most of us can hope for) in the 1st round, he has made a quality decision. Not only does he have money, but he has a team indebted to make him a better player. Can always return to school after your playing career is over.

I am sure Tyler will make a quality decision when that time comes at the end of the season and I will applaud him for whatever decision he makes.

The NBA has started to take notice of our stellar freshman point guard. His name is now popping up on multiple draft boards from a mid first to late first round status. As we all know, it's not about being ready, it's about leaving when your stock is at its peak. Tyler's stock is definitely rising, and the shortcomings in his game can just as easily be worked on in the pro's as they could from another year on the hill. We should all enjoy the ride as we enter 2014, and root on Tyler no matter what his decision at the end of the year will be. Go Orange!
The NBA does not enable anyone to work on their game. You are either good enough for major minutes or you ride the pine. It would be all about the money for any player who leaves for the NBA. It has been a graveyard for players who leave early and are not ready.
The money up front can however be very difficult not to take, if you are taken in the first round.

But you were wrong last year and you're wrong this year. Ennis is better player than MCW. He is likely gone.

Ennis is better than the likely rookie of the year?

Stats in college don't mean much for draftability in the NBA. They're more concerned with size and your draft camp showing than college numbers.

Ennis while being a better fit playing for us right now than MCW doesn't make him a better draft prospect.

Black Mamba only played 15 minutes a game his rookie year. Dude must not have worked on anything.

Jermaine O'Neil, man, even less minutes.

No wonder why the only two successful HS to pro players outside Howard and King James never did well in the pros, they didn't get major minutes.

That MCW dudes outside shot looks better than last year, where did he work on that?

Garnett, Al Jefferson, Josh Smith, Amare, Monta Ellis, Al Harrington...poor guys never got any better...

The only way I believe he leaves early if he's a lottery pick, which I don't think he's going to be this year.

Danny Schayes, Rony Seikaly, and Etan Thomas say Hi!
My sentence was misworded. It should have been: "Kids getting better at basketball isn't just limited to playing college basketball."

If they have NBA talent they can improve just as much in the NBA where they don't have limits on their time and can work with the very best.

Whatever. Ennis will be here next year. You heard it right here from the experts.

Since I couldn't respond to Flyrodder better than this. I will defer to this post. The NBA is just not condusive to any major player training. Its a sink or swim league. They don't spend alot of time on the long process of teaching those players who can't hack it how to swim. They just say 'Next'!

My meaningless opinion is that Ennis planned on being here for at least two seasons with this really strong draft class coming up but is also planning on being an NBA player so if he is assured to be a lottery pick he will go (as should 99% of players in that situation IMO). JB has said he's not a one year player so posters with some knowledge have said he will be back but again I think its all fluid and off of the expectation that he would/will not be a guaranteed lottery selection. If he plays himself into a sure thing lottery pick I believe that things change.

Ennis is a better college basketball player than MCW - I will give him that, and agree with him.

MCW is a much better pro prospect and was an elite defender in college and is one again in the NBA.

I'd agree with this. I think he came into the season expecting to be here at least two years (and with JB and his parents probably feeling the same way). I suspect Jerami came into the season expecting it to be his last one here. Either way, since Donte I'd say all of our players have made good decisions.* Jonny, Wes, Dion and MCW are unlikely to have gained anything by staying. CJ, on the other hand, was probably smart to stay. Tyler and Jerami have the added benefit of experienced, well-connected basketball families. I expect both will make good decisions, even though lots of us will still second-guess them.

* Fab doesn't count

I agree with this except Fab's decision should count as very sound since you know he couldn't go to school . . . . . . . . . . I kid
