We knew the ACC sucked this year, but

Great talk on TNT regarding ACC in between games. Scorched the conference, deservingly so. Saying - ACC for whatever reason didn’t think it needed to adapt to the new era and got overtaken very quickly, ACC schools are acting like it’s 1995 not 2025. First time since 1975 the ACC doesnt have at least 2 schools in the second round.

It’s mind boggling how SU and other ACC schools didn’t believe what they were seeing for several years and just let this happen.

It’s been years of conference-wide neglect. For example, here’s how the ACC has ranked against other conferences in SRS (Simple Rating System) in recent years:

2025: 5th
2024: 5th
2023: 7th
2022: 6th
2021: 6th
2020: 5th
2019: 3rd
2018: 3rd
2017: 2nd

SIX seasons (and counting) since this league was either the worst power conference or even lower!

Yes
Yes, Duke s d nothing else. L vilke and Clemson the best of the worse. Duke and a poor mid major this year. Our best coaches retired, good players leaving for better situations. Time for the ACC to put up or shut up.

Notice the fact that if you add in 2015, 2016 it corresponds to when JB decided to just ride the string out.

And I'd imagine that for 2020-2022 even thought the ACC had the same conference rank, that relatively they were much closer to the top conferences compared to now.

That list shows our downfall, but it might not show how much more it has fallen since say 2021.

I'll try to post some numbers later to capture this continued fall. Is the SRS you have from basketball-reference?

Bingo, that’s where the data came from

Usually the ACC still does well in the tournament, but they're getting crushed this year.

Yeah, as some others have said we had some overachieving tournament runs by Miami, nc st etc that masked the conference deficiencies. Reality is the league has been leaking air for years.

Hopefully by bottoming out everyone invests in their programs and we all rise up together.

First indicator will be if acc can win some portal battles.

First indicator will be if acc can win some portal battles.

The first indicator will be if they start spending money on coaches. Like I said before Will Wade is a step in the right direction. When/If Red is let go our next hire will be important as well need to spare no expense like NC State just did. Other ACC schools need to follow suit.

ACC was the best because they had the best coaches which attracted the best players. SEC now has the best coaches the best players and the most money. First thing the ACC needs to do is correct the coaching. All the programs need to spend the money there if they want to bring the ACC back.

Same timing. Great minds….

Will Wade coached the pants off Brownell. He kept changing defenses from m2m to 2 or 3 different types of zone. The Clemson players were dumbfounded, clearly not prepared for it. In the new world of legalized buying players Wade is a great hire and State will quickly make a major move up into the top of the conference. I also expect UNC to massively increase its basketball NIL after this embarrassing season. Their admin isn't going to tolerate losing. Davis isn't the sharpest coach but with a massive spending increase UNC will get back to being UNC. Ville will spend a ton also to be in the top echelon.
While Cuse will up its spending some I just don't see the desire or ability to spend what it will take to be back in the upper echelon of the ACC in hoops. More likely middle of the ACC and an annual bubble contender, sad to say.

I'm afraid of what those numbers would look like if we took out Duke.
Duke is the tie-break in the epic battle for 5th best conference between the ACC and Mountain West. With Gonzaga joining next year, and possibly St. Mary’s at some point, it might tilt the other way.

Somewhat related, as the rise of SEC hoops and decline of ACC hoops certainly correlate...

When you look at the education numbers for the SEC states, they're some of the worst in the country. Absolutely terrible at delivering learning outcomes. They fail their citizens.

And the NIL landscape has shown that the poor performance of their education system wasn't due to lack of potential resources. It was a choice. And now the choice of their powerful, wealthy citizens is... sports. Not a public good like education. They fight policies to improve education.

It's a grotesque example of prioritization.
It will improve now that the DOE is gone. ;)

Interesting that the entire conference failed at managing the portal and NIL. Disastrous.

It didn’t help that leaders from multiple programs retired and ran for the hills rather than adapt.

Four Hall of Fame coaches out in a few years, replaced by new coaches exacerbated the problem. But conference athletic leaders failed big time to help individual programs adapt.

It may never be recovered.

Time for the tough to get going. If we can survive Syracuse Winters we are darn tough. Let's put together a team of guys who want to win as badly as they want to breathe. I want men who act like marines. "Get it Done"!

Wade is going to coach circles around Autry unfortunately. As this tournament goes on, it's becoming so apparent that we do not have a good head coach (not that we didn't know this, but the gap is so clear now)
