We talkin' practice

So instead of $22m+ from the ACC we get $2m in some remnant conference?

I'm so glad our fan base didn't ask questions like this while we were tuning them up in the Hall of Fame bowl in 92 .. Graves wins MVP and we outgained them 400+ yards to just over 260 for OSU ... Herbstriet spent more time on his back than a p0rn star. I guess ultimately my point is we have the ability to compete ... fans or no fans ... The only reason that OSU didn't lose by more than 7 points is they were able to block a kick for a TD ... other than that they were pretty much dominated.

Unfortunately, the two programs have gone in much different directions in the past 20+ years.

Hey, OSU--could we have one of your quarterbacks?

Its a cyclical game ... look at where Bama was even 12 years ago. I just don't feel like we should sell ourselves and our ability to compete again short.

that was 25 years ago my man. it's a different age now. resource wise they are in a different stratosphere.

Sure they have more resources but you honestly feel like somewhere in the not so distant future there isn't the possibility we could face them and beat them? If that is the case just turn in your Cuse gear and we will just tell the team to stop playing. You have schools like Northern Illinois just as recent as two years ago going to a BCS Bowl and giving FSU a tough time ... and they don't even have the resources we have. After last season I totally get the idea that it is hard to be positive but honestly the idea that we can't or won't be able to compete is an attitude I can't carry.

I don't doubt that anybody can rise up for a single game, but do you see us putting together a program like Ohio St., and have the results they have had since Urban Meyer got there? I honestly think I have a better chance of walking on the moon.

Not however the original question is how do you compete with an OSU ... my point is that we have and we could in the future .. hell Meyer is one more Aaron Hernandez away from NCAA probation ... in earnest it doesn't take much ... and look at where he was once Tebow left and how quickly Florida fell ... all it takes is one or two wrong moves. I don't feel like we should act as if we don't belong that is ultimately what I am saying.

How do we compete with this? Why are we even in the same division with a program like that? Isn't it time for a super-dvision of the football factories with the massive fan bases while schools like SU compete against each other?

Simple - you can't. OSU has close to 58,000 students enrolled every year and hundreds of thousands of alums. Oh, and it is the the state university that most Ohio citizens would say invokes state pride. Should we expect Cuse to be able to compete with that? In my mind, they have a built in advantage.

Things are cyclical but is the trend of how much resources it takes to compete at the highest level of college football a cycle or is the gap accelerating?

I think to give us a chance to compete with the Ohio States, (or more relevant to us, the Florida States) of the world, they need to cut the number of scholarships that can be given out so the top schools don't get to stockpile talent the way they do. The average number of players used in a game is 52 but teams get to have 85 players on scholarship. Ideally, we'd go back to one platoon football and let the players show the NFL they could play on offense or defense. College football would be more like college basketball. But that's not going to happen. If we could get a really dynamic performer like a Brown, a Green, a McNabb or a Freeney, that could help.

But we just seem so small time compared to the top schools right now, not in the least because of the trickle of fan support the program gets.

Being relegated to some new lower football division might be the best and most practical thing for the university, but it will end my interest in the football program.

Honestly what needs to happen is the Athletic Department needs the same level of commitment to football from the university that these other schools have ... if SU had that they wouldn't be OSU for example but we would be looking at things in a whole new light.

The college football landscape has changed so much since 1992. It's not even close to the same world, if you think those days are coming back they aren't.

Army used to be a football power at one point. I guess they are waiting for that "cyclical" thing to come back around. It's not happening.

Beating them in 1 game and being a consistent football power on a regular basis are two very different things

I remember people saying the same stuff back in '86

Again the world has changed. Those days are over. The money in college sports today is night and day from what it was in 1986. It's a bad comparison. If you are hoping for the mid 80's to come back and SU comes out of nowhere out of the blue...it ain't gonna happen.

In the 80's the money in college sports wasn't anything like it is today. SU needs to invest major money in its football program to compete. If you think they don't have to, and they can have a middle of the road or even a small budget and they can still get back to a Top 25 level, it ain't gonna happen.

Where did I say anything about being a consistent power? Tell me where I said that ... competing with a team means taking the field and being competitive and winning from time to time ... who said a single thing about being a consistent power? Who says the team needs to be a consistent power to win against a top tier squad or football blue blood? Look at App St ... UL of M etc ... they win these games once in a while but aren't in a P5 and don't have the means or live in a conference to compete as a P5 but we do ... so please spare me the rhetoric.

Just point to the Nebraska game ... they were at OSU's level when SU beat them ... and then SU took an upward trend.

You insinuated it with your entire post. You compared SU to Alabama 12 years ago.

I was making the point college sports is cyclical ... we can return to where we were in the 90s ... at no point did I say title caliber .. man talking to you in these threads gives me a headache.

And I am making the point its not cyclical and we can't return to where we were in the 90's without spending big big BIG money!

You just think SU can keep doing what they are doing and boom, one day its 1990 all over again and SU will be a Top 10 team. not gonna happen
