We will upset one of the big boys this year...

That wasn't my point when I posted. I don't think we're going to win any of the 5 games listed. Which is ok, we're not there yet. But if I had to pick one, I just went with Clemson because it's the only home game of the 5, and hoping for some Friday night magic.

In reality that means nothing though. BC played Clemson at home on an emotional Friday night last year. That game was over by the end of the 1st quarter.

We also played Louisville on a Friday night in the Dome last year, 850 yards later, we all know how that went.

This league is still Clemson, FSU, and everyone else.

Agreed.

The only way we clip Clemson is if their O takes a dive due to injury or no serviceable QB emerges from their stable of 5* guys. We'd still need a lot to go right.

I think the "upsets" we should keep an eye on is NC State and Louisville. They are pretty good, but the talent gap is way, way less.

I think the line vs Pitt will be within 3. They are imploding a bit over there and lose their OC, QB, RB. And their D was not good last year.

Yep, making assumptions now based on being fairly healthy, 6 of the games on the schedule wouldn't be an upset, 6 of them would. 5 would be big ones, as listed to start the thread. NC State would be milder, but they're probably still heading into that game a double digit favorite at home.

Just no margin for error this year. Next year will be better all around (better team, easier schedule). We just need to all drink our way thru this one and hope for the best.

Just curious for the board historians but how big a mismatch was the Nebraska DLine vs our OLine in 1984? I feel like we haven't had a competent O-Line to handle "the big boys" since about oh 2003 (the year we manhandled ND at the Dome).

Our o-line in 2012 was pretty damn solid.

Big boy win to me is Clemson/LSU/FSU. Miami is down and should be competitive no matter what. It's not the 2001 Miami team that's for sure. we need to get back to the point where Louisville/Pitt are peer victories.
Doug Marrone played on that line for Coach Mac .

Sure, I wasn't referring to you specifically. I've seen number of people put them ahead of Louisville, Miami, and LSU in the likely-for-us-to-upset list in a few different threads, and I'm surprised at how many. I get the home vs away argument and get that Clemson lost Watson along with a bunch of other guys, but, like you said, until I see otherwise the only team on iur schedule I'll entertain as better is FSU.

Hope the Pitt game is even higher scoring than last year. Man that was fun.

Yep. For us personally, I think the FSU game will be more lopsided. But Clemson-FSU are playing later than usual, in November. In Death Valley. That's going to be the usual top 5 regular season matchup.

Clemson - Auburn in week 2 is also going to be a fun watch. Good on Clemson to schedule that week 2 instead of week 1. Give the new pieces on offense a warm up.

Going out on a limb and predicting that we will upset one of the following teams this year. In order from most to least likely:

1. Clemson
2. Miami
3. LSU
4. Louisville
5. FSU

This is all under the assumption that we stay healthy this year.

Well, we are currently down 5 guys in the defensive line who we were counting on. I'm at the point where I'm really concerned.

LSU! Only my pick because I'll be there and it would be the most epic upset we've had in my lifetime. We would need to give Dino a huge immediate extension if we pull this one out.

I always look at upsets this way: 90% of the time it's the big boy team with the best OL and DL vs a team with less talent on the line.

So what do we have to compensate for the disparity?

- is our QB better?
- do we have a better system?

At least this year we have a chance vs Clemson (new QB, same system and OC), LSU (QB issues, new system new OC - but one that torched us last year), Miami (freshman QB), Pitt (new QB, new OC).

I like Dungey in this system better than a lot of those schools. But until we start getting better on the line it will always be uphill.

How many teams will start a new QB in '17?

Pitt
Wake
Clemson
Miami
Central Michigan
Boston College

Right? Am I missing any? Maybe CCSU? Either way 7 or 8 teams with a new QB is interesting. Also Pitt and LSU and maybe more are installing new offenses.

Fingers crossed

I can just smell the Kool-Aid right now.

Jesus, what a schedule. All 5 of those teams are likely top 15 and possibly top 10. Should be fun though - always exciting playing up.

If LSU was at home, I'd feel better about it. A night game down there will be extremely tough. They have one of the best home field advantages in the country. (Kinda like what it will be again soon in the Dome.) The noise level is craaaazy there.

Gun to my head - we beat Clemson. Friday night game at home. They have to travel on a short week. We play Pitt the Saturday prior. Maybe we'll be 5-1 by then (one can dream). Dome rocking. I can almost see it now...
I'm gloating a little...

The BC game just got a lot more interesting; could be a steel caged death match for bowl eligibility...

We will be eligible before that game ... my guess would be we get it after knocking the snot out of Wake.
