Interesting. In his first start we put up 24 against a much better team in liberty.No.

OK I am sure he was a great leader and none of the stuff from that exit interview slamming his teammates showed up until he entered the portal. He poisoned the team? People are just making stuff up.
That’s what’s known as a “Trap Game.”Rutgers stinks but they might make a Bowl. That Illinois win was huge. How do you win at Penn State and then two weeks later at Minny, but in between lose to Rutgers at home?

Every P5 team we have played since Rutgers has been better. Every game we have looked better. Common denominator is we no longer saw TD.
Liberty just held a top 5 offense in all of college football that’s averaging 48ppg at home, to 27. Liberty has a solid defense. With how aggressive Rutgers defense is there would have been multiple opportunities for Shrader to break big runs that Tommy just simply couldn’t. Our offense has been much more efficient since GS took over. Rutgers had less than 200 yards in that game, the opportunities were there for us but our QB couldn’t take advantage. I don’t quite understand how you think GS starting in that game doesn’t give us a better chance to score more than 17.Interesting you think liberty defense is as good as Rutgers especially earlier in the season. And remember, we got boned out of a potential TD and probably more. You’re projecting the current Shrader onto week 2. I’d rather ask why did Tucker only get 13 carries.
Rutgers is a tough one to judge. I think the bigger impact was FSU. In an alternate universe where Tommy transferred after last season and Shrader is the only QB for Spring ball, then there is a big difference this year. But who started Ohio not so much.I think if Shrader starts from day 1 we look quite a bit better versus Rutgers. If Rutgers is his first start, I'm not so sure. Look at the FSU game. We/he was still figuring things out. We don't know how much of the offense he needed to learn before Gilbert could add the wrinkles he's added and we don't know how long it took for Gilbert to get a good feel for Shrader. We've seen incremental progress since he was named starter. The extra snaps in practice that he would have recieved if he been the starter from the beginning may have accelerated all that. But, as I said before, I don't think the coaches knew he was going to be exactly this good because it's difficult to show the ability to break tackles and be tough in practice when you can't be touched.
I think they still had faith in Tommy vs Albany. He played the 1st five drives and Shrader entered with the score 24-10. There was no reason for Tommy to play after that point. They weren't going to bring him back in during a blowout.I think a lot of people have to trust that the coaching staff put out the best QB they thought could win each week.
The only risk I think was actually the Liberty game - making the switch to GS.
But I think Tommy’s performance against Rutgers was the final nail that sealed their decision to move on.
GS got nearly all the Albany reps, and then it was game on.
Part of me also wonders if the staff let Tommy play against Rutgers because he’s from Jersey…and if Rutgers wasn’t on the schedule would that have changed their mindset.(understand that this line of thinking is completely opposite of what I posted above).
All accounts from players and coaches is that TD was a good teammate. If you’re looking for a villain, he’s not it.
His dad is another story. Teammates aren’t stupid. They talk. They see/know the environment that each player comes from. I bet they saw the pressure dad put on Tommy and the staff.

I think they weren’t going to tip their hand vs Liberty. Wanted to keep them guessing. I could have QBd us to a win vs Albany.I think they still had faith in Tommy vs Albany. If they had made up their mind after RU, Shrader would have started vs Albany and Tommy would have just played Q 2.
I dont think Shrader in game 2 would have played nearly as well as now coming off the Ohio game where would not have run him much more than we did TD.. Maybe we beat Rutgers, but it still took 2-3 games for him to get in an offensive flow as it was and Ohio/Albany were not gonna provide much help for that.I think they weren’t going to tip their hand vs Liberty. Yeah. You saw the playcalling evolve from the first half of FSU to the second. That's where I think the earlier change may have made a difference. If everyone, staff and Shrader, are more comfortable and familiar, maybe we get going earlier. I don't fault the staff too much. In the moment I don't think the decision was nearly as clear as it is now in hindsight.Rutgers is a tough one to judge. I think the bigger impact was FSU. FSU we got off to an awful start. We had 0 points after our first 4 drives. Had we scored earlier maybe FSU loses confidence and doesn't play as well on O the rest of the game. So that game hurt that Shrader didn't start from game 1.
RU we made a lot of mistakes in the 1st half which didn't have to do with Tommy. The last 2 drives should have been given to Shrader. That was a mistake by the staff. Up until that point I don't think we see much of a difference.
Shrader did play some against Rutgers and ran 4 times for -6 yards.
I think it's a (never to be answered) question of if he was the starter, getting starter's reps, and not coming in cold during the game, would he have been better?
I tend to agree with you that he probably wasn't ready yet. It's just unfortunate that Tommy wasn't quite ready either, in his 5th year.
Yeah, I hate to use all the dated football references, but RU did a great job of pinning us deep, tough way to get started.
Watching Tommy (and in fairness to him, watched these QBs yesterday) afraid to take shots downfield against RU minus the one gun to the head bomb, really sealed the deal.
Sack yards count as rushing yards in college. he had one negative play and that was the sack. Going off a sample size where he randomly got thrown in cold in the middle of the 2nd quarter for 4 plays is silly don’t you think.Shrader did play some against Rutgers and ran 4 times for -6 yards.

Yes, game plan was awful. Tucker had 13 rushes, 13No.

Sounds like Jaime's dad in Ted Lasso.I think a lot of people have to trust that the coaching staff put out the best QB they thought could win each week.
