Week 8 Depth Chart / Injuries

This program can't seem to catch a break. Even at full strength, the schedule's brutal. But now, we're playing without our:
- starting QB;
- 2 best receivers;
- starting center;
- starting NT ..., etc.

it's unbelievable that we played as well as we did against -St. Probably the best game we've played all year.

Two best receivers, when did West and Ishmael get hurt? The three best receivers on this team are West, Ishmael and Lewis. West is on a four game streak of long plays that we haven't seen here too often.

I was referring to Broyld and Estime ... but sure, without them, Ishmael and West are stepping up.

The more positive way to put that is that Ishmael & Phillips were the two best recruits in the 2014 class (best H.S. stats by far) and have stepped up with Broyld and Estime out.

But we have big issues at CB and maybe at C.
in no way, shape, or form was Phillips one of the top two recruits in the 2014 class. He's been a revelation on the field this year, but he was not considered one of the top shelf recruits coming in. Judging recruits based purely on HS stats is foolish, for numerous reasons.

Well, yes, many on here overlooked Phillips so he was a "revelation".

Phillips set records at his high school; was all-state -- and few here even knew that as they looked only at "two stars" from Connecticut. We have not had a recruit in many years with similar stats and while you can't look "purely" at stats, he also had a special quickness. He was under-rated by services (overlooked by most on this site as well) due to concerns that he was too slight to play RB.

This is so far off base, its worth a reply. West is not one of our 4 best WR. Broyld and Estime are most definitely our two best receivers, when healthy. Its not even close. Lewis ahead of both of them? You must be smoking the good stuff. That is just silly.

The reason we looked better last week, vs a MUCH better team, is because we finally had the dead weight of Terrell Hunt out of the way. If Long keeps this job over Hunt next year, we will be an 8 win team. Easily.

Timmy Washington once set all the CT state records to, was the CT Gatorade POY, and he didn't do anything at Syracuse. HS stats are relatively meaningless.

Phillips was overlooked because of his slight frame and most figured he'd need to redshirt. Nobody ever questioned the kid's speed or shiftiness.

IMO, while he's done some productive things he probably should have redshirted and it's too bad we're so hurting for upperclass talent that we had to play him.

What's your basis for that? West is leading in receptions, +10 over the next guy, he has 28% of the catches from WR's, 20% for the team, leads in yds, next guy (Lewis) by 180 yds, and is second in yds per catch at 15.8. He's on a run of four games with long plays that you'd probably have to look at Harrison and Williams to match.

You've been so wrong about him it's ridiculous.

The Lewis comment is somewhat tongue in cheek, but 2nd in receptions, 2nd in yds, 3rd in ydc with 14.5

Saying Estime is a better receiver is pure speculation.

As for Broyld, nah, not even close.

Unless we're talking about Dwight Freeney who had something like 180 sacks his senior year. Why every school in the country didn't offer him is beyond me. To the victor go the spoils. Just wish he was healthy all 4 years.

Can't speak to Timmy Washington (can always find a few 4 star or 5 star recruits who flop), but it isn't a coincidence that the best WR in the 2014 class (Ishmael) and the second best skill player (Phillips) are the two with the most outstanding stats in high school. It is why we like Strickland as a prospect. And, over the years, many of the better guys (Lemon, Sales, Broyld, Deleone Carter) put up the numbers.

Phillips was playing even though we were stacked with depth at RB and had other options for returning kick-offs. And, with the injuries at H-back, he provides a little hope there as well. Red-shirting is over-rated.

This whole line of thinking is just so incredibly flawed.

I live in Texas. All around me are kids who put up incredible high school stats and won't sniff D-1 football, just like every year there are college players who put up insane numbers and don't sniff the NFL. Conversely, there are future D-1 players who put up excellent numbers, but due to either inadequacies in the talent around them or the consistently high level of talent in their conference, don't put up the kind of eye popping numbers a kid in, say, a place like CT would put up. Put some of these kids in a place where the talent pool is lower, and their stats would be insane.

Recruiting is about identifying and projecting talent. It is not about making decisions based on high school stats. Sure, top D-1 bound athletes are bound to put up great numbers in high school. But the stats, alone, are not sufficient to identify a future high performing player.

Put another way: Every walnut is a nut. Not every nut is a walnut. Every D-1 bound football player will put up great high school stats. Not every player who puts up great high school stats will be a D-1 player.

Phillips simply was not highly pursued as a high school player. If memory serves, his offer list was Syracuse and Temple. Now, I'm glad he's at Syracuse and think highly of him. I'm glad our coaches were successful in spotting his talent and convincing him to come to Syracuse. But he simply was not one of our top 2 recruits. Being 6 games into a freshman season is not enough time to suddenly pronounce him as the second best recruit. Heck, one of the knocks on him is his slight stature. We don't even know if his body will stand up to the rigors of the physicality of football at this level. He may very well max out as a guy who is good for 6 touches a game and is a threat to take it to the house. That's useful and valuable, but not "second best player in the class" worth. I hope he turns out better, but this early into his career we simply don't know.

Red-shirting being over rated is not an opinion I share, not even a little.

It goes without saying that most D1 (P5) skill players are going to have had great stats in high school. Gully, Morris,, McFarlene, AAM all had great high school stats to.

Adonis Ameen Moore
- All-state selection as a sophomore, junior and senior
-2009 and 2010 Denver Post Player of the Year
-Three-time Colorado MVP selection
-Career rushing yards 5,969
-Career TDs = 79

UConn's Arkeel Newsome is now the Connecticut career rushing leader with over 10,000 career yards. He also set the state’s single-season rushing record and scored the most touchdowns in a season. (His only offer was UConn). Through 6 games at UConn he's carried 36 times for 138 yards. Nothing real earth shattering there.

This link is the Connecticut High School Football Record book; check it out, lots of familiar names. Each list has 20 some players and Phillips is nowhere to be found; career, season, td's nadda.

Really? Had nothing to do with a new OC and a new play calling strategy? Nothing to do with renewed gusto and homecoming and all that? Nothing to do with allowing RB's to get into a rhythm? Nothing to do with a RT (Omari Palmer) rounding into form and getting better every week? Had everything to do with Long over Hunt?!? I find that very hard to believe as fact. Too many other variables which no one can claim with absolute confidence that 1 thing was the be all end all reason for the improvement.

I think we are okay at WR.

West, Ishmael, Fleming, Avant, Funderburk should be fine.

TE - Looks like Moore is back. Personally wouldn't mind seeing some two TE sets with Moore and Parris.

RB - everyone is healthy.

QB - Cross your fingers and hope for the best. I have very good reason to believe that Wilson's issue was as low on the scale as possible. Odds are that there shouldn't be anymore injuries there.

OL - need to get Miller back. Depth is very scary at this point.

DL - thank god Raymon is a quick healer. DE is fine. If Crume and Williams can get back DT should be a second half of the year strenght.

LB - fine for now.

S - fine for now.

CB - hope the freshmen are getting better being thrown in the deep end.

Part of Phillips' recruiting offers was related to academics. It was reported that schools backed off because he didn't project as a guaranteed qualifier.

DT Eric Crume on the field for pregame warm-ups. No doubt listening to DMX's 'Slippin'" Looks like he's going to give it a go this afternoon

Eric Crume, John Miller and Ben Lewis are all here. Looked like Crume and Lewis were out there for early warm ups.

Freshman WR Adly Enoicy is not on the travel roster. Shafer didn't want to say if Enoicy would redshirt on Thursday. His absence says a lot.

QB Austin Wilson (out), WR Ashton Broyld (doubtful) are both listed on the travel roster.

Enoicy was never going to play this year, did anyone really think they were going to burn his shirt this far into the year?

Sounds like Lewis and Crume are going to play, hope Miller gives it a go to. Interesting Broyld is there, wonder if hes closer then the staff is letting on.
