WF Game Will Tell a Lot About Shafer as HC

Regardless of whether Marrone left the cupboard bare or the staff has not performed, we are at a critical point in the season. Four of the remaining 5 games are versus teams of our caliber and we need to win 3 of the 4.

We have had three blow outs out of 7 games and that is certainly not only unacceptable but potentially disastrous for recruiting. The staff needs to right the ship now. After all, seven games in with a bye week it is not too much to ask for the staff to pull together a competitive effort against the bottom of the Conference. Imagine losing three of the remaining 5 games or, put another way, imagine losing to two of these four: Wake, MD, Pitt and BC.
  1. Except for FSU, which could be a repeat of GT, we cannot afford any more blowouts. FSU would make 4.
  2. We need to win at least 3 of our last 5 games. Losing 4 of 5 gives us 4-8 with probably 4 blowouts. Worse, we would be left with wins against only Wagner, Tulane, NC State and some other lousy team.
  3. We need to score more than 30 points against one or two of the remaining teams, not exactly defensive standouts.
If we fail to achieve these things, I will fall on the side of assigning most of the blame to the coaches rather than the players as I cannot believe our talent is inferior to Wake, Pitt, BC or MD.

i have a feeling all that hcss is going to learn from this game is cb isnt a good dc and his db coach isnt any better

The only 2 sports that matter from a revenue perspective are Basketball and Football. They are the only ones that generate profitable revenue. ALL of the rest are a drain, including lacrosse which is probably the biggest revenue loser.

You need to care because the other sports and scholarships for them are where most of the football and basketball $$ go to support. And before the AD gets dime 1 for a budget, I think it was somewhere around 20% of the athletic revenue goes to the schools general fund.

You will never know how much is spent on each individual sport st SU as it is a private institution and doesn't have to disclose.

Div 1 lax teams divide 12.6 full scholarships among their rosters. While it certainly is a non-revenue sport i can't imagine SU's team being the biggest financial drain on the AD budget.

Shafer needs a minimum of 2 years probably 3 to really tell what type of coach he is. I for one think if we want 6 wins we need to run the table at home. Again, I don't see us beating Maryland down there. Maybe we can but Edsall enjoys kicking the out of Syracuse

People don't like Edsall but I think he has proven himself to be a pretty good head coach but his first two years at Maryland were a disaster. He seems tone right the ship even with another year decimated by injuries.

At a state school like MD it probably isn't that big a deal. At SU 12.6 full scholarships are around $750K, figure in what the staff makes.

I'm not arguing it doesn't drain the coffers; I'm saying it isn't the biggest drain on revenue as you stated in your earlier post. Women's hoops @ ice hockey have scholly limits of 15 & 18 respectively.

I'd guess that either or both of these sports use more funds than men's lax.
