What are best case scenarios from here on out?

I think 8-4 would be great. People have too high expectations for a first year coach, even if the schedule is “easy.”

I’m more concerned about two duds after bye weeks. That’s coaching. I applaud the AD for taking a unique approach by hiring recruiters, but the stakes are so high right now with conference realignment. Worries me.

How do we improve going forward? Our schtick has always been “we just need better players,” but now that we have a recruiting staff what do we say to recruits?

We say "we need you; we don't have enough players like you." I think Fran's initial recruiting success following his hire created a false sense of "we good now" in the fanbase. Some of our peers, and most of the top 1/3 of the ACC bring in comparable or better classes year after year after year.

Fran needs to stack top 30ish recruiting classes to compete.

VA Tech is the hardest game left matchup wise. The rest cannot come close to giving our O problems. We are still a better team than BC, Cal, UConn. So 8-4 shouldn’t be an issue.

That being said 8-4 would be our 3rd best season since 1998.

Best case is we win out. Unlikely but that would be best case.

Worst case a late season swoon comparable to every other year.

We land somewhere in the middle and when the smoke clears it's still a successful season

We improve by our recruiting. It's why they were hired

Most realistic scenario to me is 7-5 and the Military Bowl
7-5 IMO is an unlikely outcome.

If we beat VA Tech we will have more than 7.

If we lose and then lose to BC, we will have less than 7.

If we lose and beat BC, IMO there is over 50% we get 8.

Lose to VT, beat BC, lose to Cal, beat UConn, lose to Miami
7-5
Yes that is the most likely of the 7-5 scenarios. My point is that isn’t the most likely outcome going forward.

I said at the beginning of the season 9 wins should be the goal and hope things break right to get to 10. I still think 9 is attainable. UNLV is a good team and a good win. They went toe to toe with Boise last night and lost in the last minute, otherwise they’re in the driver seat for the G5 bid. GT was a good win, especially coming off FSU W at the time and Haynes playing. NC ST solid win. All the final scores looked close but GT and NC St were never in doubt. UNLV we dominated other than ST’s. White got another blocked kick the other night btw. I’m still not sure what happened on Thursday. I know it begins with not having a run game, but Kyle imploded. A lot is on his shoulders and how we finish the season. Plus, if OG is going to call it a year coming off a concussion and the team goals out of reach.

9 wins is a statement Fran can work with. 8 is nothing exciting. Anything less is a huge let down. Anything less than a major bowl is pointless. Sun, Gator, Duke’s Mayo, Pop-Tart, maybe Pinstripe are only bowls worth playing otherwise there will be massive opt outs, and there probably still will be even if they make one of those bowls. It would be nice to make a major bowl game though.

A couple questions.

1. How can Fran sell this season? It was no secret he sold this season as a chance to make playoffs with a manageable schedule. He won’t have that next year with an absolutely loaded schedule. Sure you can sell playing Tenn, ND, Clem, Miami, etc, but to do that i think you have to come off a good season (To these kids a good season isn’t 7 or 8 wins).

2. I assume Fran is going to clear out some space on the back end of the roster. He has a full year to evaluate and he already has 27(?) HS commits. He’s desperately going to need help in the portal. Luckily he’ll have 105 scholarships for next years roster. We have to hope to close out this years recruiting and portal class like last year because right now it’s a decent class, but lacking star power. QB will be a major question. So will OL/DL.

3. Let’s play what if. Say we only win 7 or even 8 this year. Next years win total will be set under 6. All a sudden Fran could be entering year 3 with 2 seasons as same as before. Eventually you have to show results or else we won’t be able to get the quality of athlete to succeed like he wants and of course the fan base.

4. I like how Fran is trying to implement a culture, but I just don’t see it yet. I think he is on to something when he said we are a losing program. It’s evident from the fan base all the way to the roster. The good thing is we’ve gritted out 3 good wins this year, but we also lost 2 games coming off a bye, 1 to the worst program in the conference. It was also the way we lost coming off the bye. Everyone knew the only person on Stanford that could hurt us was Ayomanor. It didnt seem like we game planned for him and ST’s lost us a game that will really hurt at the end of the season. Same thing Thursday. What was our game plan? I also don’t know this and i’d be curious to know if everyone does, but how involved is Fran with game planning and in-game adjustments? He seems to be brutally honest and from what i hear it doesn’t sound like he’s that involved. We go up against some great coaches/coordinators. Typically, our coordinators are young and relatively inexperienced. Narduzzi/Bates ate Nixon and McCords lunch. We can’t run the ball and our passing game had no answer for Pitt’s blitzing packages, which goes against our positive stats vs the blitz coming into the game. That’s a season changing loss. How will we answer?

5. What do we practice? It seems like Fran likes to bang. I’ve never seen teams in season with full pads as often as this team. But what’s the purpose? Tackling hasn’t improved, if anything it has regressed. We aren’t physical. OL doesn’t open holes and gets no push. Defensive line isn’t great either. What are we working on?

6. Burning of redshirts. Everyone knows the names from the participation report. Some are head scratchers since they never play in games. Also, it’s time to unleash Ross. He looked the part in preseason and looked the part (from the 2nd half highlights of him that i saw). He could be that deep threat we miss from when Zeed left. Let him loose. I’ll only mention 1, but why did KJE burn a RS? Makes no sense.

Moral of the story is it’s important we close the season strong. Every game is winnable. All are losable, minus UConn. We haven’t come close to a ceiling game. Odds are at least every team has 1 or 2 throughout the season. Were due. Also, building so that were consistently good would be better than flashing and splashing.

Good post.
There's talk. There're actions. & there're results.

Talk about culture. Actions include players flexing after basic plays when down 32. Results are 5-2, looking at 7-5, 2-4 second half of the season.

Worst case scenario, we discover in 3 years that Frans been winging it all along. Best case, he's a genius & has worked the loser mentality out of the culture, & we have a roster of 30, 40 kids with Lequint Allen's mindset.

Best case scenario is we beat Vegas odds. Win 8 games. Every year we biasedly think we're better but how often do we really over achieve their prediction?

Win the week.
Yep. Just continue to get better on O, D and Special teams. Figure out how to run the ball and block and tackle better.

Also, avoid that 0-2 Ref crew for the rest of the season.

I push back on first year coach stuff a bit

When pasqualoni won 10 in 91 did everyone discount it as Mac’s guys or was there excitement he was the guy.

He has a full cabinet of talent and an easy schedule. I think 8 is the right number for him.
Coaches show they are ready immediately. I’m sold on Fran but he doesn’t need disclaimers

I'm agreeing with that. I figure Cal/Miami a long shot so that -2, Uconn should be a win +1, and VT/BC are up in the air. If we get both it would be 8-4, but more than likely VT/BC will be a 1-1 and 7-5 seems the likely.

Mac’s guys. They were very talented in that era, much more than now.

That was my logic

Man this board really has lost it over one blowout loss. 7 wins would be pathetic to me. Cal lost to NC State at home and some of you act like we are going to play 2004 USC chalking that up to an automatic loss. Same with VT at home next week. I knew there was a reason to stay away from here. 9 wins should be the goal. Dino is not walking through that door.

Sure i can see us losing to Cal, we lost to Stanford at home, but if we’re chalking up the very last team in the ACC at 0-4 as a loss then there’s a problem. They got off to a hot start, but have been awful. Their offense is terrible. We should be able to light up the scoreboard.

Uconn is a win. If we lose this or even considering it might as well pack it in.

BC is down. Castellanos is hurt and can’t run and that’s his main strength. He’s not beating even us through the air. There are 3 more wins. 8 bear minimum.

That leaves 2 home games. VT is plying better, but far from great. Miami needed 3 terrible reversals to hand them a win or we’re looking at them in another light. They’ll certainly score, but their defense will also let other teams score. The Dome should be electric. We need to find a way to split 2 games at home at worst for 9 wins.

Again, 7 wins and a trip to a low level bowl like the Military or Fenway to play a G5 with half our guys out will be a high level scrimmage that would be meaningless.

Would be a fun jeopardy question.

This school gave both Cal and Stanford their first ACC Ws.
FSU...

Form of a question? Who are the Seminoles? Honestly if we loose against Cal considering FSU this year beat them, we got issues.

We are going on the road and facing a team that lost by 2 to the team that just destroyed our team, not sure that’s an overreaction.
