What are the expectations for CD-RW?

For both of you - how come? What is it you're seeing that makes you think that?
When he throws he has what looks like a weird little hope at the end, not sure if that was due to pressure or just the start of the season rust. Which led to some missed throws. I do like his arm strength and athletic ability.

The MAIN reason I hope for a tight race is that it shows we have a deep QB room and don't have a huge drop-off like after Dungy left.

Beck will figure it out, he has had all types of QB's to work with. He probably would have been able to have TD be efficient had he stayed.

Agree with this. Has the size, has the arm. We know it’s accurate enough.

But yesterday the mobility didn’t look great. Doubt he’ll make something out of nothing as much as Shrader does. And he seemed like he held the ball too long.

More time working with Beck and he should be fine. If pressed into duty this year, he’ll have his moments but I think will have a lot of struggles too.

We need to stop Shrader from taking guys head on when he scrambles. Scramble, sure, but slide please. Need him healthy, he’s the key to everything on offense.
Oh god, this could have been a post from 2018. This is all shaping up to be Devito 2.0

I’m cautiously optimistic.

But, and it’s a huge but, I want to see him with the offense tailored to him.

I don’t take much from the 2H. That wasn’t anything.

Shrader is always going to use his legs bc he doesn’t have a cannon for an arm. CDRW seems to rely on his arm first to solve issues when a play breaks down. He can flick the ball and it takes off.

IMO, we’ll always need a dual threat QB at Cuse bc we’ll never have OLs like the top teams have. You need to be able to extend plays, slide in the pocket in all directions, and be able to take off if needed.

I dunno. He’s got a lot of tools. Our speed guys must love that he basically can hit them no matter how deep they can go. But I think things would need to be tailored a bit more to him for it to really work.

I wish we still had Lamson. He may not have CDRW's amazing arm but I think he's a better all-around QB at this time and more similar to Shrader.

Oh come on.
Lol I’m not saying he’s going to be Devito 2.0, but read that post and replace Shrader with Dungey and CDRW with Devito and tell me it doesn’t still sound right

I’m not sure he would have been better (but maybe!), but I think he would have at least been a nice counterbalance to what CDRW brings.

We just need GS to stay healthy.

Thought he has been improved since last year. He is probably getting almost no run in practice with the ones or twos. GS is getting the snaps. The game plan the second half was to run the ball and burn clock. Western Michigan was still loading the box.
Early in GS career and still occasionally on here I hear the same complaints about GS.
CDRW has talent. He is developing. I have confidence that come next year we will be happy with how he plays.
Seems like some just want to look for things to complain about right now.
Doesn't Garrett have a pitch count in practice/camp with his elbow? Which means he gets a lot of time with all the WRs?

CD-RW has been fine was better against Colgate WMU is a good enough team that you can't embarrass them when the games over and you aren't trying anymore like an FCS. Assuming he doesn't start this year at some point he'll have to earn the job and can't have an awful spring game again.

To me he seemingly has most of the run/pass skills. He definitely seems passionate which if he doesn't control can turn into a negative. He is a bit like Tommy Boy, when he goes in for the sale he gets all whatever but he knows what he can do. To me he just needs to relax and let the game come to him.

While we're on this subject, why did McPhail follow CDRW instead of Davis? Has the walkon McPhail passed Davis? Or, was it just because all McPhail was going to do was hand off and there was nothing to gain by having Davis in there? Anybody have any ideas?

We don't want next year's opponents to see any film on Davis.

Two games in we've played well enough to see a lot of Del Rio-Wilson.

Stat line is 15/22 for (68.2%) for 206 yards and 3 TDs. That seems very good.

I still see a lot of skepticism about QB2 though. How come?

Yesterday the ball didn't move as well in the 2nd half as it did the first, but we definitely were making a concerted effort to give Price the ball, some penalties blew up drives, and he was playing with a lot of 2s.

I'm very confident that if we need to turn to him, he's going to play well, and he's lining himself up for a strong season next year as QB1.

He didn't play as well in the Western Michigan game as he did vs. Colgate. I just hope we are ahead by enough that he gets part of the 4th quarter at Purdue (there is nothing like playing a game on the road for your development). And I hope he plays the whole 4th quarter against Army. That would be quite a good bit of experience if he is forced into action later in the season.

He was probably annoyed at himself. Or just bored handing off. He wears his heart on his sleeve. Good and bad with that.

To be fair, I think Del Rio showed enough vs. Colgate for Babers to want to give Price the RB a second real opportunity and force feed him the ball

lamson has plenty of arm and is the most accurate of all of the qbs we had

Maybe that's it. He doesn't react fast enough and then rushes things because he's behind.

Yeah, you can see a breakdown of mechanics in many circumstances and possibly due to relying on a strong arm along with pressure as well with what you wrote.

All I gotta say is, I think the existing QBs better bring their A game next camp because that true frosh from GA is going to give ‘em hell. Jahkari is the next “great” for cuse. He will be dungey/Shrader level at some point, but can he be ready day 1? He physically seems so. I wanna see more CDRW and hoping that comes next week lol! Let’s blow the doors off Purdue.

CDRW looked fantastic against Colgate, and somewhat came back down to earth against WMU.

Then again, there are reasons for that -- many of which have been stated already:
  • Playing with the 2's / 3's
  • Force feeding the running game to Price
  • Drives stalled
  • Weren't looking to pour it on like in game 1
  • Etc.
None of which silence the critics. I'm still not sure what we have in CDRW. He flashes lots of potential, but then has games where he looks below average. Again, under extenuating circumstances.

But Pitt still looms heavy in my mind.

CDRW has all the physical tools. 2 years under Beck//3 years in power 5 programs, if he can't run a competent offense by now...?
I didn't see the 2nd half of the WMU game. But if he was running with the 2s and 3s primarily, we can't judge him yet. But you just KNOW that opportunity is just "around the corner" the way Shrader plays.

Doesn’t matter how good or bad CDRW is because Syracuse will likely pickup a transfer next year anyway

I am a bit skeptical of him, great athlete but it feels like he rushes everything and I think he should be better in that area than last year. Time will tell but I would not feel good handing him the reins next year based on what we have seen so far, limited though it may be.
Agreed. The QB position is played between the ears not just velocity of throws. The term "arm talent" doesn't just mean having the ability to throw the 100mph fastball...touch,timing and situational awareness are far more important.

To me, Carlos has yet to prove he can consistently slow the game down mentally. Until he does, he'll continue to look rushed/twitchy when playing. Maybe a shot of bourbon before each half would help ;-)

Del Rio Wilson played primarily with the 1s his entire time in the game.. with only exception being Price at RB and Ilaoa at guard his last series in. The 2s didn't come into game offensively until late in the 4th with McPhail.
