What does the court of public opinion think about MCW now?

So you're saying you're taking what the PS writes as gospel? Does MCW get to say anything before you hand out this sentence?

Let's not get fooled by what the PS objective is. They are now full bore into trying to make money by getting hits. If the story of the cashier was deemed to be something that would get more hits I think that is what we would have read. They may have a whole news cycle plotted out, who knows, it worked well with the Bernie thing. The PS no longer deserves any credit for any kind of journalistic integrity.

Do I take what the Post-Standard writes as gospel? No, I don't, but I also realize the Post-Standard is NOT the enemy here.

Do you honestly believe Mike Waters enjoys speaking to Lord & Taylor security personnel about an SU basketball player pilfering merchandise? I don't know Waters, but my guess is he would much rather be writing about games than crime.

Do you think he'd just make things up to attract traffic to syracuse.com? I sincerely doubt that. In order for Waters to do his job, he needs some degree of access to the coaching staff and team, and if Boeheim found out Waters was making up stuff about his players breaking the law, Boeheim would have no problem freezing Waters out.

I do know that someone at the mall posted photos of a person who resembles Carter-Williams being escorted by security to instagram or twitter. I also know that MCW's subsequent tweets and his vague description of the situation as a misunderstanding/miscommunication lead me to conclude that MCW was in the wrong, even if I don't know the exact details.

Waters is simply trying to answer the questions many SU fans have about this situation, which is his job.

If JB's hands are tied, how is he going to slip into the robe that MCW was going to give him for his 900 win?

(a) he hasn't been convicted of anything, so right now it is a private matter;
(b) if the article is accurate, he is a moron;
(c) "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone". I doubt there is a poster here who hasn't been guilty of a youthful indiscretion or two.
(d) I don't think a coach can/should punish a player based on hearsay.

After reading all these responses I think it’s safe to say that the Court of Public Opinion will deliver plenty of punishment to MCW, over the course of the year, whether JB or the University or some other authority does so or not. I agree that we should feel a sense of disappointment in Mike since he is such a high-profile SU athlete, gaining lots of national exposure, whom has brought an unwanted element to the discussion of himself, his team and his school. But I personally hope that his play is not affected and I will absolutely continue to cheer for him without hesitation.

Everyone agrees that what he did is reckless and stupid but he promptly paid a penalty, he’s banned from the chain for 2 years and L & T agreed not to press charges. Was he trying to hide the details of the event in hopes that the story would never even reach our “Court”? Maybe. But JB knows that the quicker we return to business as usual, the sooner this will be behind MCW and the University. Taking additional disciplinary action, beyond what MCW has already accepted and lived up to, only perpetuates the controversy and teaches no greater lesson than the one that has already been learned.

Actually any game suspensions, that others here are so eager to deal out, would likely be unjust. What if Griffin Hoffman had been the shoplifter? Yes, he’s only a walk-on but he is now on scholarship. What if it had been Grant? A young talent, possibly prone to silly, youthful mistakes, but not a starter and getting slim minutes to begin with. Suppose it was Mike G? He may be a starter next year, would suspension be delayed until he were actually eligible? My point is none of them would be suspended and it seems that suspending MCW for a game or two (or more) becomes a punishment more based on who he is rather than what he has done.

I feel that Carter-William’s “settlement” with L & T is analogous to a plea of “nolo contendere” whereby he has recognized and admitted some wrongdoing in favor of a quick and amicable resolution. If there should ever be a second incident, then I believe he would deserve the harshest possible punishment. But I say we give the kid at least the respect that we would expect were we in his position and just let this go.

He’s a kid, not a criminal.

My point is to be careful with using the old PS reputation in this day and age. Their objective is clearly focused on money via hits now. Did you see the Fine stuff, the articles about the dead peoples implications about Bernie, the Tomaselli manipulations, the VanHooser articles stating anything the PS wanted at the time. I think there is a structure/culture in place to promote articles that will make the PS profitable, there has been a change.

I doubt Mike Waters contacted the security, he had contributors, some of the same writers involved in a lot of the above mentioned Bernie stuff.

I, too, believe MCW was involved in something. But I am very hestitant to believe all that the PS is implying.

Odds are, JB will go nuts on a reporter in the post-game who asks about this. I believe JB will go nuts primarily as motivation for his team to unite. I believe he will use some implications made in the article that he believes are wrong as impetus for a team rallying blast of the reporters. Should be fun.

Right, because newspapers make so much money off of hits. The entire industry is a disaster financially. If saying something salacious was profitable, the enquirer would be a gold mine, but it isn't. I've been to the online PS thousands of times the last decade and they haven't made a single penny off me. Yep- the PS has it out for the hometown teams just to make a buck. MCW created the news, not Mike Waters.
