What people calling for Carney are really saying

I believe he won four state titles. Also as a senior he was called on to also play defense in the state playoffs. In the championship game he was named both offensive and defensive player of the game.
I’m not saying it will translate to college but the kid is clearly a gamer.
JG3 won 2 state titles as QB also in Glens Falls :). I’m not saying he’s not the real deal but if that was the thing people were hanging their hats on he would be rated a lot higher than he is.

I think it’s his speed that impresses me and I think he may be able to make some better reads.

Leave Rickie in and maybe sub in Luke towards the end of the season. If you put in Luke now and he fails what do you do then? Maybe have Villari run the wildcat. Mix it up and take the pressure off Rickie.

The question is how did we begin this season with such weak QB options? Fran was supposed to be a good recruiter.

I understand that but I thought he went overboard about it & in the process seemed to gaslight everyone else. Maybe his own players who probably knew the truth. It was almost like he over did it to convince everyone, including himself. Like as the late Roy Cohn said (maybe before your time) -- if you speak a lie enough times people will believe it's the truth.
Only in his nightmares did he loss Angeli. Why not puff the guy up all you can, at least publicly. Notice that once we had McCord, we didn’t bring in a competitor. Hindsight tells us what was reallly going on.

Have some patience and give the kid a real chance. He has had two starts. Yes, the Duke game was a debacle where no one on the team looked prepared. That's not a great learning environment for a guy making his first P4 start. Yes, he struggled starting out the SMU game, but he did improve in the 4th. I acknowledge that SMU looked to check out after the 3rd quarter, so you can put an asterisk next to it.
Playcalling early in games has not helped him either. In both games we could have had TDs early if we get better play calling. For example, how many times do we need to fail to gain 1 yard with runs up the gut before we run one outside the tackle?
I have seen enough from Collins to give me confidence that he can be good, but he's going to need a little more time than McCord or Angeli for things to click. Let's see how he comes out after the be week before we run him out of town. How week do you all think we will fare in the portal for future QBs if we start burning through QBs?
Actually continuing to play a QB who can't do the job will hurt recruiting, because players will feel, the only way they will get a chance is if the starting QB gets hurt.

This is the exact rhetoric and mentality that will send us back to another 20 years of total irrelevance - when we get blown out the remainder of the season, which we will, you will watch as all our young talent will portal and the allure of playing for a Fran Brown will mean nothing

OC has to realize and game plan to the fact that we no longer have a stud QB. you can still win if your play calling now features an offense that doesn't require the qb to make great plays. its time to get creative. don't try to push a square peg into a round hole. passing ain't gonna save us. run option.

I think that if we put up a 3-win season, we'll keep getting guys like CDRW, Braden Davis, and Rickie who didn't pan out at SEC schools

Next man up
Yes, this is what we do - we were gonna be in a game with Colgate with a 20 plus point lead until we pulled Collins - we are going to lose with Collins - we don’t no that about any of the other QBs - maybe it’s the same result but we don’t know that yet

Everyone said Justin Lamson was good and he transferred to Stanford and he started one game then transferred to Montana State. You just never know.
yes, everybody was up in arms when Lamson transferred. Some thought he was another Dungey from seeing him play in the spring game. What a joke.

I actually did go watch the play after the game before making this comment. I just have never seen a RB facing backwards when trying to catch that type of pass. Maybe he is right handed and prefers to catch with that hand. If so, a terrible play call to have HIM going to that side of the field. If he is right handed, have him to go to the right side. He is already not a great RB pass catcher.

We miss LQA. LQA could run hard, block, and catch the ball. We have one guy that can run hard (most of the time), another one that can catch passes, and I am not sure which one blocks better. With Angeli down, we are now passing to Willis and running Nixon. That mixes the defense up, but what good? I am sure they would be surprised if I came in at QB, but is the element of surprise worth it given the Grand Canyon sized drop off in talent???

The bottom line is that Collins IS a way better runner than everyone thought. If it necessary to win games. Why not with Collins? It is up to the O.C. to call a game that works with the skill of the players out there... not call the plays and put the guys out there. If Collins gets hurt, then Carney or Williams come in. We have been on QB4 and QB5 before. That is the nature of the game. But putting Collins out there and expecting him to be Angeli, much less McCord... that is poor coaching.
That Mitch guy and Austin Wilson, Shafer's recruits. They were bad, couldn't get off the bench at FCS schools.

we are really basing all this discussion about Collins from the SMU and Duke games - people forget he was pulled out of the Colgate game in the second half
And outside of one really lucky TD against Clemson where he locked in on one WR and threw the ball way before anyone would have expected it to be thrown on that route, he’s looked pretty lousy collectively. The definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. So I guess I better get prepared to sit through another drubbing vs Pitt….yay.

Yeah. This is one of these topics where people are twisting themselves up in knots to be right about it.

Collins was terrible for 7 quarters of football. So people want a change & don't see harm in it. They see a once promising season slipping away.

Others are writing dissertations about how it could be worse & the coaches know better. Hard to imagine it being worse, but sure.

Not sure about the coaching, but it is hard to watch someone who hasn't proven anything good be given the 'we got stay true to him' / build up his confidence treatment.

I do think that with the right play calls maybe you could eke something out of this bad situation. We'll see.

But there is no harm in a change.

It’s hard to get excited about going to the Pitt game. I am pretty sure the team came out flat and lost the game last year after the bye week which was a typical occurrence with Dino. Can only hope for a miracle. Go Orange!!

No joke I would rather see a 2023 redux of the Wildcat with Villari than seeing Collins back out there. He is bad, really bad, I don’t care that he was an Elite 11 finalist, so was the kid Marrone recruited who ended up holding for extra points at TCU. I don’t care that he went to LSU, just means Kelly missed on a recruit and now we did too. Start Luke, the team will at least play with way more passion against Pitt, that alone makes it worthwhile. They don’t believe in Collins nor should they

NY FB vs Texas FB
Also, Carney really looks the part. Physically, Girard never looked like a baller in either sport until he got to Clemson.

He definitely rocked the frat bod at Syracuse.

Maybe a beer pong baller?

The defense generally does enough when the offense can stay on the field. It makes enough plays to win. The offense's inability to stay on the field makes an already meh defense soooooo much worse.the opposite of complementary football
Which, if I might add, is the exact opposite of complementary football. This was one of FHCDB’s teams weaknesses (among so many others).
