What was the benefit of shortening the second half?

I’ve never seen any college football game shortened in my life. I thought it was pretty lame and it’s disappointing the backups didn’t get more love game reps.

I was right we wouldn’t see Wilson throw any passes. Tucker 23 carries and Price 5? Come one. At least we can put tho bed the excuse that Tucker is playing injured.

I’m sure the guys who play scout team all week every week, but couldn’t get off the bench yesterday feel differently.

Yup, nothing to gain from having some live reps on film.

Yup, nothing to gain from throwing a bone to the dozens of guys who toil in anonymity each week. Nothing like team morale or team culture.

I’m glad we didn’t hurt Wagner’s feelings.

Walk-ons have no expectation of ever playing in a game. They know they are practice and spring ball players who enjoy the benefits of being on the football team and dressing and being on sidelines for home games. If they want to play, go to a lesser school or play FCS or D2. Players buried on the depth chart are usually underclassmen who know their shot will probably come down the line. Upperclassmen buried on the depth chart realize they will never play but usually glad to know their scholarship paid for their expensive, private school education. If upperclassmen scholarship players buried on the depth chart were concerned with playing time they would have hit the transfer portal or are already planning to do so.

I'm not sure what potential gain there was from another 10 added minutes of Syracuse hand offs and Wagner offensive players getting battered.

There are potentially pit falls though if Wagner players decided they had enough and started taking cheap shots as we've see from Rhode Island others in years past.

Side note, I felt bad for the Wagner QB getting abused on the field and then berated by his coach on the sidelines. He handled it much better than I would have.

Its not a big deal to me I just don’t understand why it’d happen in a division 1 sport where you’re paying opponents to play you.

I understand avoiding needless injuries. Keep your contributors out of the game in the second half and let the walk ons and others play meaningful minutes rather than a series or two.

This doesnt need to be a thunderdome fight thread. Just looking for the reasoning because while this may have happened in the past I dont think I’ve ever seen it.

I was surprised by it, but once I googled it, I saw it had happened before. I saw it as recently as 2019.

The reasoning for it has been explained. It seems like you just don't like that particular reaaoning.

100% agree. As I mentioned in the game thread, I'm all about mercy rules in little kids sports, but at this level? Come on. People paid money for 60 minutes of football.

If this were youth sports this game would never have been played. The immense talent disparity was known long before kickoff. It was the equivalent of a AAA travel youth hockey club playing a house B team. Which would never happen.

We could sit our contributors and give our other scholarship players and walk ons a shot

Plus, we’re trying to excite the fan base. Sure, Wagner doesn’t move the needle but beating a 55 point spread and a team 65+ to 0 does

I like scoping out our 2nd and 3rd string guys in these games. I was PO I barely got a glimpse of them. I would never bring Wagner back if I was SU.

Game was handled 100% correct. We are lucky to have scheduled a scrimmage in the middle of the season.

Here in Georgia for High School Football. If a team is up by 30 at half time the 2nd half is a running clock if both coaches agree to it.

I had been rooting for Price and Allen to go in since mid 2nd. Again, I just wanted to see the 2nd and 3rd stringers down to the walkons get more run. We would have scored anyways.

Was it not fun seeing Allen and Hatcher score?

It could also have been the Wagner coach saying "shorten the game or we are never coming here again" --- Who knows what really transpired.

I think it was almost a liability for us to be playing that team. Our guys were exponentially bigger, stronger and faster.

At that point there was absolutely nothing to gain by continuing on.

The only thing is, I wish they would press more out into the media that they had to shorten the game. That makes Syracuse look even better.


Because they shortened the game it makes the call of leaving the starters out there even more questionable
