their leadership, 2 of the best captains we ever had, ever. the turmil we had this year, not many with the execption of allen griffin could have held this team together.

give me 4 years of scoop and kris, better than 2 years of flynn

i hope triche can follow their lead

The Orange they wore on their sleeves and Scoop's smile.

Scoop's leadership, heart, and passion. He turned into one of my favorite players to ever play here.

I will genuinely miss both as people and teammates. Excellent character guys that kept the team together through an unimaginably difficult season. They showed our younger players what it meant to be a senior leader. This especially holds true for Scoop who showed alot of humility in accepting his extended bench time this season.

As far as players and their on the court skills...lets just say I'm glad they're seniors.

Good kids. Good leaders. Good players. They will be missed.

If you had told me three years ago that I would say this about Scoop, I might not have believed it, given his track record at the time.

But what I think will be missed most about Scoop is his leadership, and the fact that he took concerted accountability / responsibility for showing the younger players the ropes both on and off the court. He was a pretty good player, too, but his real value is stepping up and providing the younger players with a role model--the role model he never had when he was a young player at SU [according to what Scoop himself has said].

Players are remembered primarily for the things they do on the court, but Antonio Jardine made a huge impact off the court, as well. He'll be missed.

Disagree. I rather have 2 years of Flynn, an elite PG, than 4 years of a good college PG. Elite players give you a shot at a title. Good college kids do not. KJo in the month of March averaged 10ppg with a high of 12. That simple won't get it done if you want to win a title. I love KJo but he is only a nice role player. He is a nice 3rd guy but you have issues if you expect him to be a 1 or 2. You need studs to get to the FF or win a title. I also rather have 2 years of Dion vs 4 years of Triche. We have too many role players on this team.

Pretty sure Scoop got closer than Flynn EVER did.

Yeah that is really fair to compare surrounding talent of those teams. Do you think with SR Scoop we are as good in 2009? And with Soph Flynn we are even more dangerous this year?

When this program hits a down patch - and don't kid yourself, it will someday - only then will some of the jokels say hey, you know who was good? You know what this team needs? Someone like Scoop Jardine.

Leadership is a tough commodity to replace. Ask UConn.

The Scoop and Kris show.

We already had a guy like Flynn this year; his name was Waiters and he was a better finisher and defender than Flynn wanted to be.

I'd take Flynn all day over Waiters in the college game. The only player on this team that was less consistent than Waiters was Southerland.

I'll miss Scoop's smile for sure, and yeah, they were exceptional leaders. I really grew to admire the two of them, especially Scoop, this year. Last year, you never would have heard me say a single positive thing about Scoop because he made some awful awful AWFUL decisions on the court, but this year, he was a great floor general. Best guard on the team this season night in and night out in my opinion. There were some nights where Triche or Waiters were on and they were better, but Scoop brought the goods almost every night, and his consistency on and off the court this year made him probably our most valuable player besides maybe Fab (but Rak and Keita did a great job at the end of the year this year given the circumstances).

I'd take Flynn all day over Waiters in the college game. The only player on this team that was less consistent than Waiters was Southerland.
I'm a huge Flynn guy, but Waiters does what Flynn wishes he could do, and to that point Waiters was probably a better shooter than Flynn as well (OttoMets already mentioned Waiters being a better finisher and defender).

Flynn was a better distributor, but he was a PG, Dion isn't.

That's just how I'd put it - Waiters is Flynn's idea of what Flynn should be on the court.

They basically shot the same percentages from 2 and 3 point range, except Flynn was a better free throw shooter, passer, and rebounder. And neither of them were good defenders whatsoever, and Flynn averaged just barely more steals per game. And you could count on Flynn on a night in and night out basis. Waiters basically took half the season off.

Edit: This probably isn't the place for this discussion though since we have one about which had a better career already and this thread is for Scoop and KJo

Waiters was up-and-down (for the month of February, mainly down), but many college players - including Flynn - have that problem. On a team that already has a Waiters, Flynn's superfluous.

I'll miss Scoops nice and high degree of difficulty bank shots. The kid had heart. Joseph had a good smile.

Did you watch any games at all this year?

Lol I was in the student section for every home game and either at the games on the road or watching them on TV, so yes. The moment Fab got suspended, Waiters completely abandoned attacking the hoop unless it was on the fast break. He started settling for jumpers like crazy and went from shooting over 50% to shooting in the low 30's. My only guess is that he felt that he had to take on more of a burden with Fab out, but from that point on, he forced things for the rest of the year until the Big East Tournament.

Edit: At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter to me if you agree or not. I know what I saw and the stats confirm it. The moment Fab got suspended, Waiters turned into a black hole filled with bricks. The Georgetown game where he completely ignored a wide open KJo (who had scored literally half our points at the time) in order to take a dribble backwards and throw up a fadeaway 3 at the buzzer that ended up being a hideous brick was kind of the defining moment of the post-suspension pre-Big East Tourny part of the season for Waiters.

That comment was mainly directed at your opinion on Dion's defense, you didn't think he played good defense? You're right, it's hard to argue he was consistent and did he settle a lot later in the year, that part we can agree on. But defensively I thought Dion was stellar...

He was stellar at jumping passing lanes for sure, but I bet if we went back and looked at all of the open 3's that were shot this season, 95% of them were directly because Waiters, Scoop, or Joseph were caught out of position. Waiters was great at getting those steals, but he seemed to really struggle with defensive rotations the majority of the time. Not as badly as Scoop did, but Triche and MCW were much better at staying in position on defense.

Edit: And Waiters was pretty good when he was on the ball, but when he wasn't on ball and couldn't jump the passing lanes, he got sleeping or gambling too much. I do think that Waiters has all of the physical tools to be an excellent defender though.
