Another thing I don't get - with all the new ACC monies coming in, where is the marketing of football games designed to increase attendance? When you look on SU Athletics, they have both SU and IMG as marketing and sales agents yet NOTHING (did I just scream nothing?) has seemingly changed.

I really don't feel sorry for football attendance when they have 2 marketing agents, both internal & external, that cannot come up with anything new? I call that self inflicted wounding! Maybe the right hand is blaming the left hand and its become so convoluted up on the hill that NOTHING (did I scream again?) is happening? I am so disappointed so far in them - especially in the perceived lack of marketing organization & coordination.

I really don't know how it works up there (well maybe I do) but IMHO it's in need of a complete overhaul! Marketing for the Tulane game is already too late now (like come out for SUs 700 win) but come on - do something at least for the Clemson game! SU Athletics really has a unique opportunity to get the casual fan interested again by playing against a top 5 team for our first ACC game debut!

Go Orange!

It really is pathetic. They market the hell out of NYC but can't do anything here in Syracuse area.

They need to make something happen for this Clemson game and better get going fast.

I cannot believe the 700th win was not advertised. It's the perfect way to showcase the history of our program and get some fans out. Make a little ceremony out of the deal like Boeheim's recent ones.

COME ON SU!

I have to be honest there really isn't the push I would expect locally and CUSU is right we might get 10 fans a game that come up from NYC we already nabbed the ACC bid with the NYC marketing, now lets pour those ad dollars back into the local community and get the attendance up, Syracuse, Rochester, Utica, Binghamton, Albany, Oswego, Auburn, Cortland and Watertown should be getting blasted with football Ads.

No one in CNY gives a about anything. Marketing money isn't changing anything. Just give away shiny things and methadone and people will come.

The problem isn't just there marketing efforts its the fact that there isnt any period. Why we are wasting millions of dollars in NYC is beyond me. Half of NYC barely speaks english at this point and have no idea what the heck Syracuse university is. No college team is ever going to become NYC's team, not Syracuse not Rutgers not ND, not PSU not Maryland etc etc. Perhaps at this point we could take some of that money and run some TV ads on stations a majority of people in the area watch, not a 13 second add at 1:30am during the Tw sports replay of Syracuse vs Colgate from 1988.

Id rather us take the marketing money and have the university buy tickets to the games and give them out free to soldiers/kids/police/fire/emt peoples. Lets get some damn seats filled..they will make all their money back on concessions anyways.

Where do you get the millions of dollars from?

very separate issue to local tactical marketing to fill seats and engage the base, but our strategic alignment with nyc (perceived or real) aided our attractiveness and positioning for realignment decisions. we should all be thankful on that front.

I think the dollar amount isnt the issue. The point is we do not need to spend money in NYC. The people in the city that care are alumni and dont need to be reminded where they went to school. The money should be spent on other things.

Thankful without question..but that goal has been obtained...time to move on to the next idea.

Syracuse got a spot in re-alignment based on the fact that they have a long history of football success and a bball program that is inches from blue blood status. Putting an ad on top of a cab or a billboard in flushing had zero to do with it.

That is fine, we are there now and thankful. Why not promote the team to our local community? I bet most people don't even know when we play clemson (oct 5th) or that its the acc opener or they are ranked 3rd... etc.

um, we had an even better resume from a program standpoint the last time the ACC realigned. how come we didn't get it? we didn't position ourselves properly and aggressively leverage our positives.

i said they're separate issues, though the point that the community needs handholding to attend a game against a top 5 opponent is equally reflective of the problem as SU's actions.

Eh. I dont like this post and it's implications. throwing around stereotypes makes me angry in the pants

Because the Governor and legistlature of Virginia stuck there nose in where it didnt belong. Syracuse was invited and was all but in, you might want to look back at what happened.

Couldnt agree more on the part that the fans shouldnt need it but I think they do. Once they garner some more interest then they can lay off of the advertising. When the team starts out slow is when they need it most. Anything to create a little buzz. Can't hurt can it?

this is a digression from the point, but the bottom line is that we didn't close...and frankly didn't even appear interested in moving, which is certainly reflective of the leadership then. our case should have been made then as a no-brainer for the conference. we failed to make that happen. this time, our ducks were in a row and we were comfortably in over the other options.

Syracuse has easily spent a few million since the NYC marketing campaign began.

For some taxi tops and a sign at Yankee Stadium? I hope those items didn't cost that much.

Seems to me they did just enough to get the earned media out of it that they had a NYC campaign.

Sorry but how is it a digression from the point. You brought up not getting in 03 and said it had to with us not showcasing ourselves or something like that. I pointed out that wasn't true and if not for some unforseen circumstance Syracuse would have been in the ACC a decade ago. I also dont know how we "weren't interested" when we accepted the invite and were ready to go. I still fail to see how a few ads in NYC lined us up perfectly for re-alignment this time around.

We were flat-footed for the VT thing.

And when #12 was needed we were flat footed against BC. Would the NYC / NYS campaign have helped then?

Impossible to say no or yes, but we got where we needed to be, so I wouldn't belittle the efforts.

Once again..i don't see how anyone is belittling the NYC efforts..we are simply saying..ok, wonderful it worked for some things. Now its time to move on to other ventures.
