What's with SU Athletics Marketing?

So, when Jason Kidd, and Kenyon Martin, and Richard Jefferson played for an OK Nets team, and I saw the coupon in a McDonalds and thought Hmmmm this might be a good family activity at a price point I can handle in order to see how I liked it...and that led me to purchase season tickets the year after (when coincidently they happened to be a great Nets team).. that it was the Nets giving away the product? I thought it was the Nets bringing in new fans and more fans, and giving an opportunity to "taste" the product. And, for the record, all professional teams where I have lived do these promotions.
Is giving inner city kids an opportunity to come with their team and parents to see something that they otherwise could not afford..is that giving away the product, or is it showing good will to the community?
And if the fan is that indifferent, that they would rather rake leaves, then I think they are not sophisticated enough to realize that someone is giving away the product to the point where they would turn down a ticket. or never purchase one in the future. But maybe a free ticket would awaken something in that fan, and all of a sudden the leaves will wait until Sunday because Saturday is now game day.
The point is you can do both. But the dome is empty. Fill some of the seats and they will start coming. If they see on their TVs that fans are showing up it may catch on..

Well said (except for having gone to watch the Nets)

Where are the Nets playing now? Oh, right - NOT New Jersey. They NEVER EVER EVER had adequate attendance in NJ, I used to buy tickets off stubhub for $2 to games and witnessed the half-empty arena myself. You are telling us the key to success is to mimicking a strategy that was so successful that a professional franchise that employed it ultimately moved. Hmmm...

i have a 2 and a 6 year old. if the options are "don't go...or go but get your hot dogs and ice cream after the game," the choice is the latter. sorry, but it's weird to say you're mandated to buy concessions during the 3 hours in the dome. you don't need food/drinks every 3 hours period during the day. that's an odd excuse.
Bring a sandwich, snacks & drinks with you in the car. Either have your own mini tailgate when/where you park, or feed them when you park or while heading to the game. You can have a chilled drink waiting for them upon return to the car and then either feed them there or, as you suggested, take them for a treat on the way home.

If anything Syracuse should sheet can the $99 season tickets and raise the prices so we have a realistic pricing model for 2013 a FBS football program. If we can't get fans at that pricing and people want more price cuts across the board, clearly this strategy to win fans back was a mistake.
My local ACC school (GA Tech) has similar issues. They have 7 home games this year, finishing up with the big state school. They offerer an $85 season ticket package for all but the final game. They've had 1-day $15 ticket sales for some of these games. Note these "cheap seats" are not as good as Touchdown Town.

And, in a page from Georgetown (as well as Syracuse and others), single game tickets for the finale are not available... at least not until the last days leading up to that game. If you want to get a ticket for the last game today, you'll either need to get true season tickets or buy a $170 package which includes tickets to 2 other games. The seats in these packages may not be that great either, and I suspect many are bought by UGANDA fans who then dump the other tickets in the secondary market.

The point is that Syracuse isn't the only school dealing with these issues.

Oh, and their fans have expressed similar comments about student attendance over the years. Keep in mind that there's been a large demographic change in the student population over the past 30 years that's not helped football attendance for the non-Big State Schools.

As sad as it is...YES! Look at the Chiefs. The only time that stadium is packed in the summer is on nights where they are giving something away for free

Eureka!
Fireworks in Dome, it works for the chiefs.

It really is pathetic. They market the hell out of NYC but can't do anything here in Syracuse area.

I cannot believe the 700th win was not advertised. It's the perfect way to showcase the history of our program and get some fans out.

COME ON SU!
I gotta tell ya, knowing the program history has ZERO impact on my decision to go or not to go to a sporting event. NONE. NADA. ZILCH. When it comes to deciding whether or not to go to a game, I don't care about the #44. I don't care about the 1959 team. I don't care about Micheal Owens 2 pt. conversion or the 1987 Sugar Bowl. I care about: what do my kids have going on; what needs to be done around the house; what needs to be done for my business, is it a good golf day, is the team any good, are they entertaining, etc. , is there a quality opponent (yeah, I am not going to a Wagner game, not gonna happen)

I guess no one cared about boeheims 700th and 800th .. Etc. mattered to me and other su fans. I consider that similar to this situation. Obviously the team hasn't been as good recently as the bball team and that's the biggest issue. You can't tell me that a little advertising won't help though. You run a business ? You have to understand advertising works. Maybe it won't get an extra 10k but it will help nonetheless.

I was at the Falcons game last Sunday. They had a plenty of pyrotechnics go off in the Georgia Dome. We were about 20 rows up near the player's tunnel and could feel the heat from the fireworks as the starting offensive team was introduced.

They could do something similar in the Hill when the team enters the Dome.

The WWE finds a way to put off pyrotechnics/fireworks every Monday and Tuesday night in much smaller buildings than the Dome. It can be done

Point taken. But still a different situation. We are not paying out millions in salaries etc. And the Nets being a basketball team play a large number of games with the need to fill the arena. My point was more that a marketing ploy worked for me. I just think that for the current year, Syracuse has nothing to lose by trying some of these things. Nothing ventured, nothing gained type of thing.
