Agree to a point. My regret stems from not being able to watch him for another year wearing Orange. No disrespect to Pearl, but that 1987 team was an eyelash from a national title. I'm wondering if Pearl coming back would have prevented Sherm from ascending into his role and the team not being quite as good.
I’m drawing a blank on why he didn’t end up at SU. What was the reason again?Winfred Walton

In my 30+ years as a cuse fan, I'd probably agree with you. I remember being so bummed about that. That said, I'm not sure I feel much different than Dior deciding not to come. That all said, neither guy left early, which was the question that was posed which is why I didn't mention them.Winfred Walton
I remember watching Pearl that year and thought that he was even better at the 2 guard when Douglas played. The man was in constant motion. He could post up his defender, had great hands to catch the ball. I think had CV he'd stayed we would have seen more of that.Pearl himself has said he regretted leaving the cuse early.
I agree with you though, if Pearl had stayed on, how would Sherman have fitted into the line up, and whether that 87 team could have gone as far as they did with that team possibly still be a Pearl show. Monroe and Triche were entrenched as seniors at the 2 there may not be room for Sherman to become Sherman.
That's a great question. The Pearl/Sherm arc is fascinating. Sherm has always been one of my favorite players. In hindsight, what an accomplishment to do what he did right on the heels of Pearl, who is my favorite all time Orangeman.
Yeah, I remember the announcement like it was yesterday. I was on a sales call in some small podunk town. I remember listening to the radio all day between calls, waiting for the announcement. We knew he was heading to the NBA but like you, I was still hoping.Melo !
Yeah, I know he had to go.
But please let me dream !
I excluded him thinking he'd be everyone's choice. Ah but what could have been...check the roster over the following 3 years. Warrick, Pace, Forth for 2 more Nicohl years. Roberts and Watkins for 3. Nichols. Damn.Melo !

Another year or 2 of Fab Melo would have caused an NCAA death penaltyThis may be a little controversial, but I would say Melo (Fab). From a basketball development standpoint, I would have loved to see what he would have accomplished with another year in Orange.
Like I said, controversial. I was referring to his development as a very athletic “big.” I was not taking into account other ramifications of a longer stay. If we look at it through that lens, he’d fall into the category of athletes we wish had left sooner!Another year or 2 of Fab Melo would have caused an NCAA death penalty
If I ever get to ask JB a question, it would be a hypothetical question: if Pearl had stay one more year how he would have managed that roster, would the general be held back. That's a great question.
