vs.

The 2018 team was two plays from being 11-1, in which case they would have won the division and been favored to win the ACC championship game. they would have had to have bene considered for the playoff, (which they still wouldn't have gotten:
2018 College Football Rankings for Week 15 | ESPN )

They both ran and passed for more yards. Their rush defense was slightly better than in 2001 but their pass defense was significantly worse. Both teams had a big advantage in turnover ratio. The 2001 team was actually out-gained by 30 yards a game. But they had the greatest player on either team: Dwight Freeney, a guy who could change games all by himself. The other team would just stop running plays in his direction or trying to throw deep. their quarterback would get punch drunk by the second half. Freeney vs. Dungey would have been interesting. 2001 also had the best running back: James Mungro. But they had no one who caught 20 passes! The 2018 had four guys catch 40 passes.

Both teams had disappointing performances in late-season confrontation, (0-59 vs. Miami and 3-36 vs. Notre Dame). Both won minor bowl games decisively. None of the 16 teams in between them were nearly as good as either team.

2018 was a few plays from being 11-1, but they were also a few plays away from some more losses as well.
Tough call, I’d probably go ‘01, but just a guess.

Well I think on paper 2001 for sure. But then you remember Coach P vs the Spread and it is a blowout W for 2018.

I'd go with 2001. I don't think it's as simple as comparing numbers. If it were that easy, the record for 2001 would have been different. There is no way a team outgained by 30 ypg should win 10 games. I think the match up favors 2001 because the best player on the field specialized in taking away what the 2018 offense did best, passing. If Freeney could destroy Vick the way he did in 2000, Dungey wouldn't fair much better. There were other solid guys on that dline too.

I think the 2001 offense does enough against the 2018 defense. Turnovers aren't an issue because they keep it on the ground and grind away with Mungro.

The outcome makes sense to me, but I don't trust any sim that has Mark Holtzman getting back to back sacks and Freeney getting none.
