We have an abundance at forward this year (even if we are not using them all) and next year, but the year after is what's important to think about and why they are so important.

Let's say we don't lose Woody or Bras this year, next year will also be a tough because they could have 4 forwards ahead of them if Marek comes back (not sure he will). With this year being an extra year, Woody would be a soph and Bras would be a redshirt junior for the 22/23 season, if I'm not mistaken. If they have the patience, they could potentially be our starting forwards in 2 years with Woody having 3 years remaining (4 if he red shirts) and Bras with 2. They will be seasoned by then, have time in the program and a clear understanding of what Coach is looking for. I'm seeing some KrisJo and JSouth potential with these two long term.

I know their first impulse may be to go elsewhere, but we will lose Griffin, Q (if he stays), potentially Williams and Marek (if he comes back). This is the stability some posters have mentioned that we need to build back into the program and why I think it's very important that the coaches are explaining the big picture and keeping them engaged. Having an 18 year old son, I know that can be like talking to a block of cheese sometimes, but I think these two are worth it.

I think the same rationale applies to Edwards and Frank, just happens a year earlier if they can hang in there, this is a free year. I mean you gotta love Franks's energy just watching him on the sideline! I think there's more potential here then we give these guys credit for. I hope John Bol stays just for his positive energy on the team, kid has a great smile and always seems to celebrate his teammates.

Also, no matter what we think we see out there, we DON'T know the conversations the coaches may be having with them regarding long term plans. Hopefully they are having those.

I really like your words above. I just wish it still worked that way. Newton has shown enough to know he can play at this level. If he can't do it here by next year...he'll do it somewhere else. Probably same for Robert.

Was a small sample size, but really liked Woody's game when he got minutes early in the season.
Lots of energy, feisty, rebounding, hitting shots -stuff the team needs. I admired that Woody got after it and didn't play in fear of the JB Hook, as many seeking more PT appear to do.
Disappointed we didn't see more of Woody -really hope he stays, but understand if not.

I hereby motion to require using full names or last names when referring to players. I spent way too much time thinking who AG QG MD BW FA JE is. Like this post if I have your support. Thank you for your time.
ie: Math Guys don't like letters!
Use player numbers instead work 4U?

Right!! This isn’t Twitter. You don’t have a maximum amount of letters to use. Kids these days I’ll tell ya.

Okay... Fixed.

This site and LinkedIn are the only social media type things I've ever done, learning the ropes LOL!

I like Woody and hope he finds his role here but for me, I think we need to be recruiting over every spot on this roster. We need a talent upgrade and more options (even if the current coach won't use them). It's big time basketball, competition needs to be upped.

Very nice post!

If you think about it, we've always had forwards that came in behind other great forwards, they learned how the forward position is played here and what Coach wants, then they step into that role when their time comes with a real understanding of what's going on...

I always thought that was how we countered not being able to land some of the top kids. When teams bring in their talented freshmen, we usually have experienced players to compete against them which has always allowed us to be competitive with those teams. Woody and Bras potentially bring that route back to us in my opinion.

This is year 3 for Braswell if he isn’t getting in the rotation now it should send the message to the fanbase.

James Southerland as a Junior was getting 16 MPG on a 30-1 team.

Robert Braswell is getting 8MPG with 3 DNP-CDs.

The coach doesn’t think he is part of the rotation.

Woody Newton I am not going to even bother. These kids aren’t going to just wait their turn on a medicore team that could use energy.

Losing Sidibe you would think would get the forward reserves More minutes.
However we don’t slide Griffin to the SG position.
We don’t slide Newton to the SG position.

It’s a joke. Braswell I don’t blame if he leaves when he graduates.
Newton isn’t gone but we don’t know how patient he will be.
Especially since we have Williams coming in.

The HC doesn’t care what fans say though. He makes sure to say that.

Excellent post and spot on IMO.

For me, it's not so much him saying he doesn't care what fans say, etc. as much as his consistent deflection and spin of what's being discussed. Like the other night's presser after the NCST game about how the guys were giving it their all, complete effort, etc. as if that was at the core/crux of what actually is being questioned. Just complete nonsense, spin, etc. being spewed on his behalf.

Of course it's coach's decision of who plays, etc. and not the fans, but that doesn't preclude JB from being subject to legitimate criticism on that front. JB's comfort zone has pretty much always been 6 guys, no more than 7 getting 'legit' minutes of PT over his career, and even shorter than that in the 2nd half of games where the outcome was still in doubt. He's heard the external noise before out there, however, because we are/have been a middling program for several years in a row now vs. one chasing conference titles and high tournament seeds, the static is seemingly much louder.

I am not an alarmist, and I love Braswell's game.

That said, for a kid from South Carolina, his DNP in a 20-point L at Clemson last weekend had to be a gut punch for him and his family. I see him as an intriguing talent, mostly because of his nose for the ball on the defensive side. And I believe in his jumper. I pray he stays.

I’ll never understand the logic of not using Woody, I mean...
The kid showed he has some game, gets sick, and now can’t sniff the hardwood.
Meanwhile, Buddy faces the same scenario but is allowed to play himself back into shape, no questions asked.
It frustrating watching the inevitable transfer play out. Just can’t wait to hear the rationalizations on that one.

The 3rd forward on this roster gets under 10 MPG.
That is why.
The starters are so good they have to play a lot.

Just like the logic for Buddy to play over 90% of each game no matter how he is playing

But Villanova does it and Virginia does it so don’t forget that fan.

Woody isn’t gone but I wouldn’t blame if he said why would I get minutes next year if Benny Williams is coming in and Alan Griffin doesn’t leave?
With Braswell around as well.

I think it's very important that the coaches are explaining the big picture and keeping them engaged.

The issue I see is the big picture. What is the big picture?

Is Braswell going to be ok to get minutes (possibly) on year 4?

Woody can look at Edwards to see what's ahead for him, and Edwards looks at Braswell to see what's ahead for him.

It's not like they have Derrick Coleman and Billy Owens ahead of them but they are not getting minutes with the current team, not even in year 2 or 3.

There has to be some reasons they are not getting minutes. May be legitimate reasons we are not told about but what can they be? Just not practicing well enough?

Like I said in another thread, would be great to get them 5 mins a half to spell Q and Griff, but those minutes end up going to the starters. Same thing next year, 10-12 minutes a game would be good, but not if they just go to the starters. Any discussion about big picture has to start with some playing time moving forward.

I like both of them and wish they played more. However, many of us were saying the same thing last year with Jalen and Brycen.

Goodine has scored 18 points all year. And this is a Providence team this has been missing their starting PG.

Jalen started out the year starting for URI; but 5 of the last 6 games he’s played less than 10 minutes while scoring a TOTAL of 3pts in those 6 games.

BJ Johnson was a loss, but usually when guys leave they don’t shine somewhere else. JB rarely lets talented guys get no run.

We are playing short rotations to be a medicore bubble team year after eventually you have to develop these players or it just continues.

I am sorry but Braswell and Newton can play.
They don’t get a chance.
Buddy and Joe aren’t significantly better than them.

If it was Triche and Jardine I get it those guys were better all around.

We don’t play the bench and are 11-6. What will happen next year that will make the bench play?

Jalen and Brycen are not 6'8/6'9 athletic ballers that will hustle and play defense. Can't teach that.

To me, Woody played good ball early on his true freshmen year. Bras after an injury year is getting it and understanding his strengths. How a player turns out is not always just about their individual game, points and all that, the team dynamics are important, everyone is not a good fit everywhere no matter how talented they are (I know there are some exceptions).

I think Goodine had some potential here, definitely to be a backup 2 this year. Jalen, straight up fumbled when he got the keys.

I think everyone sees (with our own eyes) these two guys can play here now, contribute and have good careers before it's done. They fit what we do. I didn't see that with the other transfers besides Goodine, BJ and maybe a lil lil bit with Moyer.
