Why Bras and Woody are so important

I think this is where Hopkins’ voice in the basketball offices and the respect JB had for him went a long way. He could probably make the case more effectively than our current assistant coaches (especially over the long haul of a season) that underclassmen like Southerland, Pace, CJ, Grant, Christmas, etc. deserved playing time based on what they were doing in practice.
Gerry is a good driver.

There is no such thing as a PF in our system.
They play the same defense as the SF.

On offense who cares who plays where.

It’s amazing how our medicore team can’t play a bench. God forbid we actually play the long game for once.

I don’t care to continue being medicore and Woody could play SG.

It’s amazing how nobody but Buddy, Kadary or Joe can learn to play the top of the zone.
Our defense is so hard nobody else can learn it over months.
Sure, on defense. But the stronger more physical forward always has a bigger role on the boards, on defense, as well as offense. On offense, the SF (Griffin) is primarily a perimeter player while the stronger forward more often sets up low, or at the high post. Always has been true. Some years the two forwards can be inter-changeable, but this year, Guerrier is the only forward capable of strong inside play. You need at least one of the forwards to contribute with toughness on the boards. Marek isn't going to provide that.
If you want to be mediocre, take Griffin or Guerrier out to give developmental minutes to a bench forward. If you want to be more lame on the boards, let Guerrier sit for a stretch.

Now, if you want to talk SG, top of the zone -- different story. I believe Griffin could play the role.

I think Griffin would play 2G on most of our teams. I can't think of any of our recent teams where at 6'5 and his style of play he would play exclusively at the 3 with no time at the 2G (except maybe with Paul Harris). One of the pillars of our team has always been having height, length and athleticism with our forwards, he has the athleticism part but not the other two. However, at the 2G he has all three (even Hughes at 6'6 often played up top). It would seem like a no brainer to have him playing some 2G with Kadary up top for stretches on both offense and defense for the long term benefit.

Assume everyone comes back (yeah I know), you now have the chance to play a lineup with Kadary, Griffin, Benny, Q and whoever at center for a change lineup. There's not enough minutes next year for Griffin to play exclusive 3 with Benny and Q on the team and it would be a shame if we don't have a way to play those four together at times. All he would need is maybe 10 mins a game at the 2G.

Maybe. I haven’t seen any evidence that he can dribble, or do anything else on offense but shoot the 3 - and he’s been spotty there.

But if he’s shooting the 3 well, that’s enough to be a solid role player because he’s good on defense.

Yeah, I'd be hesitant to compare him to BJ as well. BJ was iffy early on, but you could see he had the athleticism and body control/slasher type movement to be effective with the ball and doing more on offense than just shooting.

I haven't seen anything that makes me thing Bras is going to be competent as a "slasher." Woody is more likely to fulfill that role, but also a tad hard to assess at this point due to limited PT.

That being said, Bras works hard. He's a bit like AG, in that the effort always seems to be there to get loose balls, go for rebounds, etc...and he seems a bit more competent in the zone than AG already. That can make it easier to live with his streaky shooting at times.

He is streaky thus far though - but did finally seem to be putting it together before he started practicing too badly to play.

I think the best comparison for Braswell is potentially Southerland, but Southerland was a great shooter. Braswell has gotten hot a few times, but I’m really not quite sure what to make of his shooting ability.

I know - he has an insanely quick shot, and is VERY quick to shoot after a touch. It's hard to assess if any of that is attributable to what someone else mentioned earlier - a need to to impress in your 2 minutes of PT...

I am always surprised at how often he seems to come in and miss everything - it feels like on his first or second attempt at least one of those shots is going 4 feet past the rim.

Outside of Kadary our 3 subs stunk today, they didn't deserve more time. Ajak finally sees the court and practically get's t-ed up.

Wish I knew the story with Woody.

Still recovering from the Covid ?

I agree, not overly impressive.. but I still think (even with today's results), you gotta give them minutes when you can so they can work themselves into playing and get the mental part of it out of their head. Not sure what's going on with Woody, don't think Franks gonna play this year and John Bol was not on my list for minutes. I think Bras could have played some more in the second half, but i'm not complaining, those were good minutes he got today.

I don't think you can just throw players on the floor and expect them to play well when they haven't been playing much all year. We have to build them into a rotation over games and over the course of the season.

That JBA play had me rolling though!!!

healthy players we recruited on that bench should be prepared AND EXPECT to see action every night. otherwise it's just court side seats with zero interest.

Where is Woody? JB should try him over Braswell as our forward sub.

JB has used Woody ahead of Bras if they need another forward in the press and that one time when he publicly said he would play Woody and then put him in for 2 min at the Clemson game.
